A PAIR of neighbours have been baffled by Leicester's new lockdown rules as half their street is required to isolate.

The residents of Scraptoft, Leicestershire, say they are "totally confused" as half of their street are allowed to head off to the pub, but the others have to stay home.

Leicester was put into the UK's first local lockdown after a worrying spike saw Public Health England identify 2,987 cases, accounting for ten per cent of all cases in the UK.

The MailOnline reports Kathleen McDonagh, 77, and her daughter Mary, 55, will be stuck inside for another two weeks as part of the local lockdown.

But their neighbour who lives just inches away, Veronica Cayless, 77, is excited to get back to the new-normal on "Super Saturday".

Mrs McDonagh says she is most disappointed that she will have to wait to see her grandson, having been apart from him for three months.

However, she added: "We are doing everything we can to follow the rules to help the community,' said Mary, who revealed they have not even seen family members on the opposite side of the street, except on Zoom.

"We will never get out of lockdown if people don't just knuckle under and do it for everyone else."

Meanwhile, Mrs Cayless is planning to visit her son in St Albans.

She said: "'It is totally confusing for everyone. But I am lucky."

Another neighbour - stuck inside the lockdown zone - Lisa Jones, said: "I'm confused.

"Am I allowed on the other side of that fence?

"Am I allowed to go to the local shops for essentials because the shops I use are just outside the lockdown zone?'

She added the news was "devastating" for her as she would be unable to catch up with her months-old grandson.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said that while non-essential travel was not being made illegal, it would if it had to.

He said: “We are recommending against all but essential travel to and from and within Leicester.

“We will take further action including putting in place laws if that’s necessary but I very much hope it won’t be.

“If further action is needed then of course we are willing to take it.”

Boris Johnson today thanked the people of Leicester for their “forbearance” in dealing with the new coronavirus restrictions - saying "we cannot be prisoners of this crisis".

The drastic move will see non-essential shops closing while schools will also have to shut.

Leicester streets were today deserted after the news was announced.
