COVID news live - latest UK updates: Lockdown powers extension vote in Commons as Oxford vaccine effectiveness revised down in US trial - sky.com

Encouraging picture in the US three months into the vaccination drive

Coronavirus deaths have dropped below an average of 1,000 a day in the US for the first time since November, while the number of older adults being admitted to hospital has dropped significantly.

The country's vaccination programme has been bolstered in recent months and dozens of states have thrown open vaccinations to all adults or are planning to do so soon. Around 70% of Americans aged 65 and older have received at least one dose of a vaccine.

Despite the good news, cases remain stubbornly high at more than 50,000 per day and scientists have warned now is not the time to relax.

The government's top infectious disease expert Dr Anthony Fauci said at a White House briefing: "I'm often asked, are we turning the corner? My response is really more like we are at the corner. Whether or not we're going to be turning that corner still remains to be seen."

Dr Eric Topol, head of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, also said the US should remain cautious.

"We're getting closer to the exit ramp. All we're doing by having reopenings is jeopardising our shot to get, finally, for the first time in the American pandemic, containment of the virus," he said.
