Girl arrested on suspicion of attempted murder as three stabbed at Welsh school - The Independent

Wales school stabbing: Victims’ injuries ‘not life threatening’, police say

A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after two teachers and a teenage pupil were stabbed at a school in Wales, police said.

Three people were injured in the attack at Amman Valley School in Carmarthenshire, at around 11.15am on Wednesday.

Two air ambulances were sent to the school, also known as Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, and worried parents rushed to the scene.

One air ambulance then headed to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where the three wounded were treated, Dyfed-Powys Police said.

Parents waited for several hours at the gates of the school, which was “in lockdown”, before tearfully being reunited with their children as the school day ended.

Superintendent Ross Evans said: “Three people - two teachers and a teenage pupil - have been taken to hospital with stab wounds. The family members of all those injured have been informed.

“A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and currently remains in police custody.”

Weapon taken into school means line crossed, says MP

Jonathan Edwards, the independent MP for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, said he could not recall anything like it happening in Wales before.

He told Channel 5 News: “There has been a stabbing of one of the students, and then teachers have tried to intervene and unfortunately also some of the teachers have been stabbed.”

Mr Edwards added: “I believe two teachers have been sent to hospital, one has been released with injuries to the arm and the hand, and I believe the other teacher unfortunately has been transferred ... to Cardiff, to the Heath Hospital, and that situation is far more serious.

“It is a huge shock, isn’t it really? I’d never think that anything like this could possibly happen in Carmarthenshire, in the Amman Valley where I am from, I can’t recall anything like this ever happening in Wales before.

“It is the crossing of a major line really, isn’t it? That a weapon has been taken into school and been used.”

More officers will be out in force, says police chief

People living near the school will see more police in the area over the coming days as the investigation continues, a police chief says.

Superintendent Ross Evans, Carmarthenshire Commander, said: “Just after 11.20am this morning we received a call advising us of an incident at Amman Valley School in Carmarthenshire.

“Emergency services immediately attended and the school was locked down for the safety of all on the premises.

“Three people - two teachers and a teenage pupil - have been taken to hospital with stab wounds. The family members of all those injured have been informed.

“A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and currently remains in police custody.”

He said he would like to reassure parents and the public that the incident was over, and pupils had left the school.

“We are working with the school and other agencies to ensure appropriate support is available to all involved,” he added.

“This was a very distressing incident and our thoughts are with the victims, their family and everyone impacted by what has happened.

“I am aware that there is footage of the incident currently circulating on social media and would ask that this is removed to avoid contempt of court and distress to those affected.

“I would also ask that people do not speculate while there is a police investigation ongoing.”

He said police were working with the school, Carmarthenshire County Council, and other agencies to ensure appropriate support was available to all involved.

“Local people will see more police in the area over the coming days as the investigation continues,” Mr Evans added.

I saw girl injured amid mayhem, says pupil, 15

Pupil Osian George, aged 15, was outside with friends when panic broke out, with people running around and screaming, he said.

“Teachers came running out and told us to go to lessons and go into class quickly,” he told The Independent’s Alex Ross at the scene.

“It was mayhem. Everyone was running around crazy.

“I saw one girl hurt, she was being looked after, and then I went to lesson.

“We got in lesson with no idea what was going on. We waited until we could get out and see our parents again. I felt lucky to get out safely.”
