A girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a pupil and two teachers were injured in a stabbing at a secondary school. Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Ammanford was put into lockdown with emergency services at the scene earlier today.
Dyfed-Powys Police said two teachers and a pupil were taken to hospital with stab wounds. A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and currently remains in police custody.
Multiple people with children and family members in Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Ammanford said they were told to stay in classrooms, with students reportedly asked not to use their phones. Superintendent Ross Evans, Carmarthenshire commander, added: "I would like to reassure parents and the public that the incident has concluded, and pupils have now left the school.
"We are working with the school and other agencies to ensure appropriate support is available to all involved. This was a very distressing incident and our thoughts are with the victims, their family and everyone impacted by what has happened."
An air tracking service has confirmed there were two air ambulances at the scene, one from Dafen, Llanelli, and one from Welshpool. Ysgol Dyffryn Aman on Margaret Street in the town is a bilingual comprehensive school and sixth form with around 2,000 pupils who come from a large surrounding area.
Emergency services remain at the scene and the school has been closed while investigations continue. In an earlier statement, Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Dyfed-Powys Police is dealing with an incident at Amman Valley School.
“Three people have been injured and are receiving treatment. One person has been arrested and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident. Emergency services remain at scene and the school has been closed while investigations continue.
“We are working closely with the school and Carmarthenshire County Council. We are aware that there is footage of the incident currently circulating on social media. We would ask that this is removed to avoid contempt of court and distress to those affected. We would ask the people do not speculate while there is a police investigation ongoing”.
The Welsh Ambulance Service (WAS) also issued a statement and said they were called to the scene at around 11.15am. They confirmed that they sent four emergency ambulances and a hazardous area response team. They were joined by two Cymru high acuity response unit paramedics and an operational manager.
They also confirmed that advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service in two Wales Air Ambulance charity helicopters.
A spokesperson for Wales Air Ambulance service later confirmed that three critical care teams were deployed to the incident. The spokesperson said: "I can confirm that the Wales Air Ambulance attended an incident in that region today.
"We mobilised three critical care teams at 11:30. Our Dafen and Welshpool based crew were mobilised by air and our Cardiff based crew was mobilised by road. Unfortunately, we cannot comment any further."
Cllr Karen Davies, an LEA governor at the school, confirmed she had been told the incident involved a stabbing with two members of staff injured. She said she did not know whether any children had been injured.
"I have been told someone has been arrested and that two members of staff have been stabbed, but have no confirmation on how serious the injuries are," she said. "I send my thoughts to those injured and all the people there. I know how well the school rehearsed lockdown and I am sure everything is under control.
"It is shocking. You hear about these things happening in Manchester and London but it is literally our comprehensive here."
Cllr Davies said she was in touch with the council and her thoughts were with those injured and at the school. Describing the incident as shocking, she said she has been in contact with the council and that the school had strict emergency lockdown procedures in the event of emergencies.
At around 2.35pm, Carmarthenshire County Council issued a statement on their website. The council has said that family members of all injured persons have been informed.
They also said that they wanted to reassure parents and the public that the incident has been contained. In their statement they said: "Dyfed-Powys Police is dealing with an incident at Amman Valley School.
"Three people have been injured and are receiving treatment. One person has been arrested and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident. Emergency services remain at scene and the school has been closed while investigations continue."
