More from Covid-19

The figures mean an extra 549,078 people are now confirmed to have had their first dose compared to yesterday, while another 1,390 people have had both jabs.

The seven-day rolling average of first doses given in the UK is now 433,8571

The latest vaccination numbers are accurate up to 6 February.

They have been revealed as the vaccines minister told Sky News he is "confident" the UK will meet its "tough target" of offering everybody over 50 a jab by May.

Nadhim Zahawi said that the UK was administering doses at a rate of nearly 1,000 per minute at one point on Saturday.

It comes as the World Health Organisation's special envoy on COVID-19 said the UK has been "vindicated" over its "brave" decision to offers vaccine doses up to three months apart.

Dr David Nabarro told Sky News' Sophy Ridge On Sunday the move had provided the rest of the world with a "great lesson".

The UK went against the advice of the World Health Organisation (WHO) by choosing to offer a second jab between three and 12 weeks after the first dose.

Data from the Joint Committee on Vaccines and Immunisation has so far shown reasonably high levels of protection after the first dose.
