More thoughts from our readers on Scotland’s new five tier lockdown system...

Joe MacReany: "It will work if everyone follows the guidelines! During lockdown Scotland went 19 days consecutive with no new cases and almost eradicated the virus! Until Boris opened up while Scotland and Wales were still in lockdown! So yes it can and does eradicated the virus. Stay safe awbudy"

There's still plenty of time to have you say - go on, you know you want to!

R number across the UK still above 1

The reproduction number, or R value, of coronavirus transmission across the UK still remains above 1.

Data released on Friday by the Government Office for Science and the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) shows the estimate for R for the whole of the UK is between 1.2 and 1.4.

Last week, the R number was between 1.3 and 1.5.

R represents the average number of people each Covid-19 positive person goes on to infect.

When the figure is above 1, an outbreak can grow exponentially.

An R number between 1.2 and 1.4 means that on average every 10 people infected will infect between 12 and 14 other people.

Some more thoughts from our readers on Scotland’s new five tier lockdown system...

Alison M Fraser Smith: "Poor labelling of tiers. These will give false impressions of security.

"So level 1 us called level 0. That implies that all us well. No holds barred. Level 5 is called Level 4. This suggests that there is worse to come. CONFUSING and MISLEADING."

Andy Littlejohn: "Excellent work, its about protecting NHS and saving lifes!!! It is now simply down to the general public adhering to what is being asked of us!!!"

Christmas is not cancelled... down south

Are you paying attention Mr Leitch?

People may be able to celebrate Christmas “as a family” this year, Downing Street has said.

A Number 10 spokesman told a Westminster briefing: “The PM has been clear previously that he is hopeful that in many ways we could be able to get some aspects of our lives back to normal by Christmas.

“As I say, we’ve been clear about the ambition to ensure that people may celebrate Christmas as a family this year.”

ONS: 0.57% of people in private households had Covid-19 in the two weeks from October 3 to 16

In Scotland, an estimated 0.57% of people in private households had Covid-19 in the two weeks from October 3 to 16, or around one in 180 people, the ONS said.

It is the first time the ONS has published an estimate of the number of people testing positive for the virus in Scotland.

But it said it was too early to comment on any trend on the proportion of the population testing positive and due to the small number of tests within the survey sample the results should be interpreted with caution.

The analysis is based on swab test results from 4,639 participants, with 24 people from 20 households testing positive.

How will Scotland's new five-tier lockdown system work?

The new system explained:

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said Level 0 will see most businesses open and eight people from three households able to meet indoors.

This becomes restricted to six people from two households at Level 2, while other measures would be close to those seen across the country in September.

Level 2 was described as being similar to those which are seen across Scotland at the moment outside the central belt, including limits on hospitality.

Ms Sturgeon said Level 3 would see “tougher restrictions” like those now in place in Glasgow and Edinburgh, including the closure of pubs – although restaurants may be able to open in some circumstances.

The highest tier – Level 4 – was described as being closer to a full lockdown seen in March, including the closure of non-essential shops. Six people from two households will be able to meet outdoors.
