Ammanford school stabbing live updates as teachers and pupil hurt and girl arrested - Wales Online

A girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a pupil and two teachers were injured in a stabbing at a secondary school. Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Ammanford was put into lockdown with emergency services at the scene earlier today.

Dyfed-Powys Police said two teachers and a pupil were taken to hospital with stab wounds. A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and currently remains in police custody.

Multiple people with children and family members in Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Ammanford said they were told to stay in classrooms, with students reportedly asked not to use their phones. Superintendent Ross Evans, Carmarthenshire commander, added: "I would like to reassure parents and the public that the incident has concluded, and pupils have now left the school.

"We are working with the school and other agencies to ensure appropriate support is available to all involved. This was a very distressing incident and our thoughts are with the victims, their family and everyone impacted by what has happened."

An air tracking service has confirmed there were two air ambulances at the scene, one from Dafen, Llanelli, and one from Welshpool. Ysgol Dyffryn Aman on Margaret Street in the town is a bilingual comprehensive school and sixth form with around 2,000 pupils who come from a large surrounding area.

Emergency services remain at the scene and the school has been closed while investigations continue. In an earlier statement, Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Dyfed-Powys Police is dealing with an incident at Amman Valley School.

“Three people have been injured and are receiving treatment. One person has been arrested and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident. Emergency services remain at scene and the school has been closed while investigations continue.

“We are working closely with the school and Carmarthenshire County Council. We are aware that there is footage of the incident currently circulating on social media. We would ask that this is removed to avoid contempt of court and distress to those affected. We would ask the people do not speculate while there is a police investigation ongoing”.

The Welsh Ambulance Service (WAS) also issued a statement and said they were called to the scene at around 11.15am. They confirmed that they sent four emergency ambulances and a hazardous area response team. They were joined by two Cymru high acuity response unit paramedics and an operational manager.

They also confirmed that advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service in two Wales Air Ambulance charity helicopters.

A spokesperson for Wales Air Ambulance service later confirmed that three critical care teams were deployed to the incident. The spokesperson said: "I can confirm that the Wales Air Ambulance attended an incident in that region today.

"We mobilised three critical care teams at 11:30. Our Dafen and Welshpool based crew were mobilised by air and our Cardiff based crew was mobilised by road. Unfortunately, we cannot comment any further."

Cllr Karen Davies, an LEA governor at the school, confirmed she had been told the incident involved a stabbing with two members of staff injured. She said she did not know whether any children had been injured.

"I have been told someone has been arrested and that two members of staff have been stabbed, but have no confirmation on how serious the injuries are," she said. "I send my thoughts to those injured and all the people there. I know how well the school rehearsed lockdown and I am sure everything is under control.

"It is shocking. You hear about these things happening in Manchester and London but it is literally our comprehensive here."

Cllr Davies said she was in touch with the council and her thoughts were with those injured and at the school. Describing the incident as shocking, she said she has been in contact with the council and that the school had strict emergency lockdown procedures in the event of emergencies.

At around 2.35pm, Carmarthenshire County Council issued a statement on their website. The council has said that family members of all injured persons have been informed.

They also said that they wanted to reassure parents and the public that the incident has been contained. In their statement they said: "Dyfed-Powys Police is dealing with an incident at Amman Valley School.

"Three people have been injured and are receiving treatment. One person has been arrested and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident. Emergency services remain at scene and the school has been closed while investigations continue."

They then added: "We are aware that there is footage of the incident currently circulating on social media. We would ask that this is removed to avoid contempt of court and distress to those affected.

"We would ask the people do not speculate while there is a police investigation ongoing. The family members of all injured persons have been informed. We would like to reassure parents and the public that the incident has been contained."

Girl arrested on suspicion of attempted murder as three stabbed at Welsh school - The Independent

Wales school stabbing: Victims’ injuries ‘not life threatening’, police say

A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after two teachers and a teenage pupil were stabbed at a school in Wales, police said.

Three people were injured in the attack at Amman Valley School in Carmarthenshire, at around 11.15am on Wednesday.

Two air ambulances were sent to the school, also known as Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, and worried parents rushed to the scene.

One air ambulance then headed to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where the three wounded were treated, Dyfed-Powys Police said.

Parents waited for several hours at the gates of the school, which was “in lockdown”, before tearfully being reunited with their children as the school day ended.

Superintendent Ross Evans said: “Three people - two teachers and a teenage pupil - have been taken to hospital with stab wounds. The family members of all those injured have been informed.

“A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and currently remains in police custody.”

Weapon taken into school means line crossed, says MP

Jonathan Edwards, the independent MP for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, said he could not recall anything like it happening in Wales before.

He told Channel 5 News: “There has been a stabbing of one of the students, and then teachers have tried to intervene and unfortunately also some of the teachers have been stabbed.”

Mr Edwards added: “I believe two teachers have been sent to hospital, one has been released with injuries to the arm and the hand, and I believe the other teacher unfortunately has been transferred ... to Cardiff, to the Heath Hospital, and that situation is far more serious.

“It is a huge shock, isn’t it really? I’d never think that anything like this could possibly happen in Carmarthenshire, in the Amman Valley where I am from, I can’t recall anything like this ever happening in Wales before.

“It is the crossing of a major line really, isn’t it? That a weapon has been taken into school and been used.”

Stumbling blocks that could still impede Rwanda deportations - The Guardian

After a bumpy and lengthier than expected journey the government’s safety of Rwanda legislation has finally reached the parliamentary finishing line with royal assent expected this week. But as a battle on one front ends for the government several new ones open up.

Condemnation of the UK government for pushing ahead with the Rwanda scheme has been unprecedented, within the UK from parliamentarians, lawyers and human rights campaigners and from European and global human rights organisations. UNHCR today issued a statement warning that the new legislation did not overcome the protection gaps identified by the supreme court, which found Rwanda to be unsafe for asylum seekers from the UK. It urged the UK government to reconsider the plan.

Here are the challenges the government still faces before getting flights off the ground.

New legal challenges against flights to Rwanda are expected not only on behalf of individual asylum seekers identified for forced removal to the east African country but relating to broader issues too.

Most of the courts have not been on the government’s side with their novel and untested Rwanda scheme. Toufique Hossain of Duncan Lewis solicitors, part of the team of public law and human rights lawyers who have challenged the Rwanda plan, said: “This legislation damages the UK’s proud, ancient record of championing separation of powers, the constitutional right of access to justice and protecting people from serious harm. However, there are clear legal avenues to pursue, to hold this government to account and we will be pursuing them on behalf of our clients.”

Finding an airline

Rishi Sunak said on Monday that commercial charter planes have been booked for specific slots to fly asylum seekers to Rwanda, although none have been publicly named or confirmed. The government’s air partner AirTanker, which has a £10.5bn deal to provide 14 modified Airbus A330s under a 27-year private finance initiative which started in 2008, said in January 2023: “We are aware of the many reports in circulation and can confirm that AirTanker has no intention of operating deportation flights to Rwanda.”

However it has not responded to requests for comment in recent weeks in response to speculation that it will facilitate the government’s Rwanda flights. Several commercial airlines have previously pulled out of doing government deportation work on scheduled and charter flights after negative media publicity. After an aborted flight to Rwanda that was due to take off on 14 June 2022 using the Mallorca-based company Privilege Style, the business said it would not be doing any future Rwanda flights on behalf of the UK government.

Questions over deterrent effect

Although the government said small boat crossings had reduced by a third in 2023, figures published on Monday revealed a 24% increase in small boat crossings so far this year compared with the same period last year, suggesting that asylum seekers have not stopped climbing into precarious dinghies because of the threat of removal to Rwanda.

Some asylum seekers have told the Guardian that after persecution in their home countries and dangerous journeys, even the risk of drowning in the Channel does not put them off coming here, let alone the risk of being sent to Rwanda. “I come or I die,” one asylum seeker who fled persecution and imprisonment in Syria said. Others said that if they were forced to Rwanda they would try to find money to pay smugglers a second time to get them back to Europe. This runs counter to the government’s argument that Rwanda will smash the people smugglers’ model.

Asylum process and housing in Rwanda

Neither the UK nor the Rwandan government has provided evidence of accommodation for the tens of thousands of asylum seekers in scope for removal to Rwanda. A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office document said there was little land space in the small country, even for Rwandans. UNHCR has warned that though Rwanda is training judges, lawyers and officials to process asylum claims from the UK there is no evidence that a robust and independent system is up and running.

Camilla, William and Kate receive royal honours - BBC

Buckingham Palace June 2023PA Media

Queen Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales have all received historic royal honours, Buckingham Palace has announced.

Prince William becomes Great Master of the Order of the Bath.

Catherine is now a Companion of Honour, which recognises achievement in arts, medicine, sciences and public service.

And the Queen becomes the Grand Master of the Order of the British Empire, once held by the King's father, Prince Philip, and grandfather George VI.

The appointments to these historic royal orders, traditionally announced on St George's Day, have rewarded those at the centre of the Royal Family, at a time when both King Charles and Catherine have been receiving treatment for cancer.

They will be seen as an acknowledgement of those keeping up official duties when royal numbers are diminished, including recognising the efforts of the Queen, who at the age of 76 has been attending events on behalf of the King.

She becomes the head of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, set up in 1917 to honour a broader cross-section of civilian and military recipients.

Catherine, as she continues to recover from her health problems, becomes the first royal to be appointed as a Companion of Honour in the order's 107-year history, in what will be seen as a show of support from the King who recommended her.

She joins a select group of people honoured for their contribution to public life, such as artists and creative figures, currently including Sir David Attenborough, Ian McEwan and Sir Elton John.

Prince William's honour as Great Master of the Order of the Bath will see him taking on a role held by his father when he was Prince of Wales.

The Order of the Bath was established in the 18th Century as a reward for exemplary service in military or civilian life.

Meanwhile, the Duchess of Gloucester, a working royal at the age of 77, becomes a member of the oldest and most senior of the orders of chivalry, the Order of the Garter, which dates back to the 14th Century.

Lord Lloyd-Webber, who composed music for last year's Coronation also becomes a member of the Order of the Garter - which is limited to 24 companions and is the personal gift of the monarch - along with Air Chief Marshal Lord Peach and Lord Kakkar, who has had a long career in medicine and public service.

Graham Smith, chief executive of the anti-monarchy group Republic, called the honours a "slap in the face for all the hardworking people who get awarded MBEs, OBEs and CBEs".

"The royals do very little in return for huge reward - but that's never enough. Instead, we see our head of state handing out trinkets and medals to his own family in an act of breathtaking nepotism."

Rishi Sunak pledges to hit 2.5% GDP defence spending target by 2030 - BBC

Rishi Sunak has promised billions more for defence to counter threats from "an axis of authoritarian states".

The prime minister said UK military spending would rise to 2.5% of national income by 2030, in a move that hardens a previous spending pledge.

He stressed the UK was "not on the brink of war" but claimed the extra money would put the country's defence industry "on a war footing".

Labour is also committed to a 2.5% target when economic conditions allow.

Labour's shadow defence secretary John Healey said the party "wants to see a fully funded plan" to reach this level, but he said the Tories had "shown time and time again that they cannot be trusted on defence".

He said Labour would review resources for the armed forces within a year of taking office, if it wins the general election later this year.

Making the defence announcement during a visit to Poland, Mr Sunak said the UK was facing the most dangerous international environment since the days of the Cold War between the West and former Soviet Union.

He said the extra spending would put the UK's defence industry "on a war footing," although he stressed the UK was "not on the brink of war".

However, he argued the investment was required because authoritarian states such as Russia and China were showing a "new assertiveness" and were increasingly working together.

The prime minister said spending would rise "steadily in each and every year" before 2030. Downing Street said it would mean £75bn more for the military over the next six years.

It echoes a previous commitment made by former PM Boris Johnson, who promised in 2022 to raise spending to 2.5% of GDP by the end of the decade.

Mr Sunak confirmed earlier the UK will provide an additional £500m for Ukraine this year, on top of £2.5bn already allocated.

He added that the UK could continue to provide "at least the current level of military support to Ukraine for every year it is needed".

The prime minister also argued the 2.5% target could set a "new benchmark" for Nato, whose target for members to spend 2% of GDP on defence is now a decade old.

The UK spent 2.07% of GDP on defence last year, according to the data, but says it plans to spend 2.3% this year, including resources given to Ukraine.

In total 11 of the 31 Nato members last year hit the 2% target, according to the transatlantic alliance's estimates.

Poland was the top spender as a share of its economy, allocating 3.9% of GDP - more than twice the amount it had spent in 2022.

The US was in second place, spending 3.5%, although it is by far the biggest spender overall.

The announcement comes after increasing Tory pressure on defence following the Budget in March, with two ministers publicly urging him to increase spending last month.

Downing Street said its 2.5.% commitment was "fully-funded" - but some experts have previously expressed scepticism over long-term targets.

Paul Johnson, director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank, said the previous, vaguer promise to raise spending to 2.5% of GDP was "not worth the paper it's written on unless accompanied by some sense of how it will be afforded".

Last month, MPs on the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) warned the government currently lacked a "credible plan" to fund the MoD.

Last year the National Audit Office (NAO) said the Ministry of Defence was facing a £16.9bn black hole in its finances - despite an injection of £46.3bn over the next 10 years.

Mr Sunak refused to rule out calling a general election in July when questioned earlier by reporters, repeating his previous comment that it would be "in the second half" of the year.
