Police declare 'major incident' after snowfall as Met Office issue yellow warning - The Independent

UK weather: The latest Met Office forecast

A new yellow warning has been issued for now as frosty weather whips up chaos with flights grounded and a major incident declared in Cumbria.

East Midlands Airport closed its runway this morning after heavy snowfall blanketed the ground, halting flights.

It comes after Cumbria Police declared a major incident as drivers struggle in treacherous snowy conditions in the South Lakes area, particularly in Bowness and Grizedale.

Police urged residents to only drive where necessary after an overnight amber snow warning covered large swathes of the region.

Superintendent Andy Wilkinson. Cumbria Constabulary, said: “Agencies across Cumbria are working together in response to the impact that heavy snowfall is continuing to have on the county’s roads.

“We are working at pace, to help clear roads so those currently affected can get moving.“I would urge anybody considering travelling in Cumbria tonight, to only do so if necessary. The cold temperatures forecast will make road conditions even more difficult.”

There are three yellow weather warnings for snow and ice in place today, after an amber warning was in force overnight for Cumbria.

The warnings cover much of the Midlands, Yorkshire, the North West, Wales and Scotland.

Racing: Fairyhouse and Carlisle fit to race as heavy snow puts damper on Leicester and Southwell meetings

Fairyhouse and Carlisle have been given the green light to race this afternoon, but the meetings at Leicester and Southwell have been lost to the cold weather.

Day two of the Fairyhouse Winter Festival, which features a trio of Grade One contests, has survived the threat of frost and a dense fog.

Clerk of the course Brendan Sheridan said: “The fog has lifted, even a little earlier than Met Eireann said it would, which is great.

“You can see the full length of the straight here now and you can also see right around Ballyhack.

“As you know, fog is a bit tricky and it can come and go, but at this point in time, we don’t envisage any more problems.

“We’re in a good place now and we’re all good to go.”

Sheridan had earlier reported on the IHRB Twitter site: “Thankfully, the frost didn’t set in overnight.

“The ground on both tracks is soft. We’ve a completely fresh hurdles and bumper track and we’ve seven or eight yards of fresh ground on the chase track.”

Parts of Cumbria were hit by heavy snowfall overnight but Carlisle passed an early-morning inspection, although racegoers have been warned to be careful on the surrounding roads.

Southwell’s ‘bumpers for jumpers’ card had to be called off after three inches of snow on the track and surrounding areas proved too much to clear.

Leicester were forced to abandon their National Hunt meeting due to the current cold snap.

Sir Keir Starmer praises Margaret Thatcher in pitch to woo Tory voters - telling them: 'Take a look at Labour again' - Sky News

Sir Keir Starmer has praised former Tory prime minister Margaret Thatcher in a bid to woo Conservative voters as he urged them "to take a look at Labour again" ahead of the next general election.

In a comment piece for The Sunday Telegraph, the Labour leader said he is extending a hand of friendship to all Britons - irrespective of who they have supported in the past at the ballot box.

Sir Keir wrote: "Across Britain there are people who feel disillusioned, frustrated, angry, worried. Many of them have always voted Conservative but feel that their party has left them. I understand that.

"I saw that with my own party and acted to fix it. But I also understand that many will still be uncertain about Labour. I ask them to take a look at us again."

He went on to argue that "Labour has changed dramatically" since Jeremy Corbyn's time as leader - and claimed his party had undergone "shock therapy" to ensure it was "rooted in the priorities, the concerns and the dreams of ordinary British people".

In a move that is likely to incense critics on the left, Sir Keir praised the late Baroness Thatcher for effecting "meaningful change" in the UK as she "sought to drag Britain out of its stupor by setting loose our natural entrepreneurialism" during her 11 years in Downing Street.

Britain's first female prime minister remains a deeply divisive figure in UK politics, from the Falklands War and the bitter year-long miners' strike to privatisation and the poll tax, which ultimately led to her downfall.

More on Labour

Sir Keir contrasted his approach with the Tories under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak - claiming that the government has been drifting away from the electorate after "years of sowing empty promises, cynical falsehoods and false dawns".

'We'll have to check the tape'

The opposition leader claimed the current state of Britain is cause to throw hands up in despair, and the country no longer works for those it is supposed to.

"Families across the country are bombarded with daily reminders of our current malaise: crumbling public services that no longer serve the public, families weighed down by the anxiety of spiralling mortgage bills and food prices, neighbourhoods plagued by crime and anti-social behaviour," he wrote.

Asked about Sir Keir's praise of Baroness Thatcher, shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds told Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips that the point of his article was to show Labour could be the "vehicle for change in the UK".

He said the objective was not to endorse an prime minister in particular but to highlight the need for change.

Asked if he himself was a Thatcher fan, Mr Reynolds replies: "No, I am not. But I can recognise that she was a formidable opponent."

But Health Secretary Victoria Atkins said she believed the public would "see this for what it is".

"Don't forget he wasn't appealing to Margaret Thatcher's entrepreneurial spirit when he was courting votes from the hard left," she told Sir Trevor.

"And I suspect the great lady herself would view a man who is trying to ride on the coattails of her success with the following words. No, no, no."

Mr Sunak was also criticised for failing to get a grip on immigration, with Sir Keir accusing the PM of "a betrayal" after net migration rose - despite repeated Conservative promises that this figure would fall.

Sunak: Migration level 'too high'

Sir Keir also lambasted the "nonsensical" idea that some topics are "off limits" for Labour - vowing to "smash the criminal gangs growing fat on the misery of human trafficking".

He wrote: "I profoundly disagree with the idea Labour should not be talking about immigration or small boats crossings. These are matters of serious public concern and deserve to be treated as such."

The latest figures suggest Labour has a 20-point lead over the Tories in the polls, with the opposition telling supporters that "all signals" are pointing to an election in May.

Police declare 'major incident' after snowfall as Met Office issue yellow warning - The Independent

UK weather: The latest Met Office forecast

The police have declared a major incident as drivers get stuck in treacherous snowy conditions across Cumbria.

Agencies are responding to multiple reports of vehicles stuck in traffic due to heavy snowfall in the South Lakes area, particularly in Bowness and Grizedale, says Cumbria Police.

Police are urging residents to only drive where necessary as an amber snow warning covers large swathes of the region.

Fresh yellow and amber weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office as temperatures are forecast to possibly drop to a low of -12C overnight in Scotland, where many awoke to severe frozen conditions this morning.

The warnings, for snow and ice, cover much of the Midlands, Yorkshire, the North West and Wales.

Where is Rudolph when you need him?

David Holdsworth, 61, who works as Santa Claus, is stuck in his grotto at Heyes Garden World, Ambleside, after a failed attempt to get home to Cartmel 22 miles away. The A591 remains blocked with multiple closures.

Mr Holdsworth says he and his colleagues usually get picked up from work by a shared van service, but after an hour of trying to get onto the road to travel home, they accepted defeat.

He said: “Santa’s been stranded. It’s chock-a-block. It’s chaos.

“I’m stuck in my grotto, I’m just laid down trying to keep warm. There’s no heating, I’m going to stay here and see if the roads open.”

Mr Holdsworth says his fellow Santa Claus, Keith, is with 12 other colleagues in the centre’s café.

The 61-year-old who supports Liverpool says he is going to pass the time by watching Newcastle Versus Manchester United.

“I might be a grumpy Santa tomorrow,” he added.

A driver said he was stuck between Ambleside and Windermere for more than five hours with his family as heavy snow brought the traffic to a standstill.

The driver, who wished to remain anonymous, told the PA news agency: “We’ve had no communication from any of the authorities and we’ve not seen a single gritter trying to free anyone.

“My wife and four-year-old had to walk two miles - there were cars driving on the wrong side of the road that caused more jams.”

Cumbria Police said the M6 southbound between J38 and J37 was blocked due to jackknifed lorries and that the A595 between Millom and Furness was impassable.

Disabled woman stranded in snow

A woman was stranded for four hours after getting stuck in the snow.

Linda Reynolds, 70, was travelling with her grandchildren and husband when they got stuck in the snow travelling from Ambleside to Cartmel.

“I have an automatic car, because I’ve had a stroke- it was jumping into higher gears, it was spinning around.

“Four or five men were trying to push me up this hill.

“I was in sheer panic, I wanted to cry,” she explained.

The worried grandmother said she was advised by police to go to a nearby hotel since she relies on a mobility scooter which could not get her through the snow to the refuge centre at Ambleside Parish Centre.

The police and RAC could not get their cars to her, adds Ms Reynolds.

The 70-year-old says she is lucky to be able to stay in the Langdale Chase Hotel but is worried about paying the bill for the stay next month, however she had no other option since all routes home were blocked.

She says her other daughter and grandchildren who were travelling in a different car walked an hour away to Ambleside Parish Centre who are providing emergency shelter.

All travellers have had to abandon their cars in the road.

Heavy snow flurries hit huge parts of Nottinghamshire throughout the early hours of Sunday, December 3, leading to treacherous road conditions. Nottingham City Transport announced all its services were being suspended due to the weather and that they would be 'assessed regularly' before any services were re-instated.

Israel-Gaza: UK launches surveillance flights to find Hamas hostages - BBC

Rockets streak into the sky from Gaza towards IsraelAFP

The UK will carry out unarmed surveillance flights over the Middle East to search for Hamas hostage locations, the Ministry of Defence says.

The flights will help gather intelligence on potential hostage whereabouts.

Five British nationals are missing and the UK government has not said how many could be held by Hamas.

"The safety of British nationals is our utmost priority," the MoD said.

"In support of the ongoing hostage rescue activity, the Ministry of Defence will conduct surveillance flights over the eastern Mediterranean, including operating in air space over Israel and Gaza."

It added that the aircraft will be unarmed and will be tasked solely to locate hostages.

"Only information relating to hostage rescue will be passed to the relevant authorities responsible for hostage rescue."

The aircraft will include Shadow R1s, which the Royal Air Force use for intelligence gathering, ministry officials said.

Information on the potential locations of hostages will be shared with Israel. More than 130 captives are thought to be in Gaza.

The Pentagon said unarmed UAV drones had been deployed over Gaza in "support of hostage recovery efforts", earlier this month.

"The US is conducting unarmed UAV flights over Gaza, as well as providing advice and assistance to support our Israeli partner as they work on their hostage recovery efforts," the Pentagon said.

Fighting resumed on Friday after a week-long truce in Gaza. The IDF said it had hit more than 400 Hamas targets on the first day.

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry says at least 193 people have been killed in the latest wave of Israeli attacks.

The ministry says more than 15,200 people have died in the war in Gaza, sparked by Hamas's attack on Israel on 7 October that killed at least 1,2000 people.
