Flood alert for south Scotland as amber weather warning issued - BBC

Flooding is expected in parts of Scotland after an amber weather warning was issued for heavy rain.

The Met Office alert, covering Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders, forecasts 40-50mm of rain on Friday and warns flooding could pose a danger to life.

Yellow alerts are also in place for rain in central Scotland and for snow and ice in northern areas.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) has issued flood warnings in central and southern areas.

The amber warning runs from 03:00 until 12:00 GMT on Friday.

People in Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders have been told to expect flooding in homes and businesses, with a "good chance some communities will be cut off by flooded roads".

Car parks next to the River Nith in Dumfries, including the Whitesands, were closed on Thursday evening amid flooding concerns.

Transport Secretary Jenny Gilruth said: "The conditions could potentially bring disruption to the transport network, so it's important people plan their journeys before they set off - particularly if they're looking to use the trunk roads or travel by rail.

"Motorists should make sure their routes are available, follow travel advice from Police Scotland and drive to the conditions. The Traffic Scotland website - traffic.gov.scot - offers the latest information on the trunk roads, and you can also follow @TrafficScotland on Twitter which is regularly updated.

"If you are planning to travel by rail, please check with your operator ahead of your journey to see if your service is affected."

Superintendent Stewart Mackie, of Police Scotland's road policing division, said people should consider delaying their travel plans until conditions improve.

"If your journey is essential, please plan ahead by making sure you have sufficient fuel and supplies in your vehicle, a charged mobile telephone and always drive as the conditions allow," he added.

The Met Office has also updated a yellow weather warning for heavy rain on Friday which now runs from midnight and expires at 14:00 GMT on Friday. The alert covers Central Scotland, Tayside and Fife, south west Scotland, Lothian and Borders and Strathclyde.

A further yellow warning of snow and ice covers northern Scotland, apart from Orkney and Shetland, from midnight until 21:00 GMT on Friday.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) has also issued flood alerts for Argyll and Bute, Ayrshire and Arran, CentralScotland, Dumfries and Galloway, Dundee and Angus, Edinburgh and Lothians, Fife, the Borders, Tayside and west central Scotland.

The wet and windy weather in the UK is being linked to a massive winter storm in North America, during which 60 people died in eight states over the Christmas weekend.

Met Office meteorologist Simon Patridge said the impact on Scotland would be "nowhere near as dramatic".

And BBC Scotland Weather's Christopher Blanchett explained the link with the US storm - known as a bomb cyclone - was not clear-cut.

"It's difficult to trace the overnight rain tonight, directly to the US bomb cyclone system," he said.

"It looks as though that particular system actually went north, though other systems developed in the Atlantic and came towards our shores - which it may have had an impact in helping to create. So it's not a simple clear-cut picture.

"However, the severe cold plunge we saw across the USA in the run up to Christmas, did energise the jet stream - which in turn is giving us the current unsettled spell of weather here in Scotland."

Wallasey pub shooting: Third arrest over Christmas Eve attack - BBC

A third person has been arrested over the Christmas Eve pub shooting that killed Elle Edwards and injured four men.

Merseyside Police said the 26-year-old was not thought to have been the target when she was shot by a gunman outside The Lighthouse in Wallasey.

A man, 28, was critically hurt and three others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

A Tranmere man, aged 31, has been held on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.

A 30-year-old man, who was previously arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, and a 19-year-old woman, who was held on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, remain in police custody.

Officers have been granted more time to question the pair.

Ms Edwards died after several shots were fired at the entrance to the Lighthouse at about 23:50 GMT on Christmas Eve.

Police said the pub was packed with mainly young people at the time.

On Wednesday, Deputy Chief Constable Ian Critchley said Ms Edwards' death had been "the most appalling and callous murder".

He said Merseyside Police "will not rest until we bring the offenders to justice".

"By that, I mean the person who pulled the trigger of the gun in the most indiscriminate way [and] anybody who was responsible for arranging, facilitating or harbouring this individual and anybody who continues to withhold information on who has done this or indeed where the weapon is," he said.

He said the force would be "tireless in our approach to find justice for Elle and her family" and added that officers had already "made great strides forward" in the investigation, thanks in part to the public providing "some tremendous intelligence and community support".

Birmingham stabbing: Two men arrested over Cody Fisher killing - The Times

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of the murder of Cody Fisher, who was stabbed to death at a nightclub on Boxing Day.

West Midlands police said they had detained a 22-year-old man early today, just after midnight, at an address in Birmingham city centre and arrested a 21-year-old man in London.

Fisher, 23, who was a non-league footballer and sports coach, was killed at The Crane nightclub in Birmingham at about 11.45pm on December 26.

Wallasey pub murder: Police say they will not rest in pub killer hunt - BBC

Police are "relentlessly" hunting the killer of a 26-year-old woman who was shot at a pub on Christmas Eve and will target "anybody harbouring them".

Elle Edwards was shot in the head at the Lighthouse in Wallasey Village, Merseyside.

Four other people were hurt, including a man, 28, who remains in hospital.

Dep Ch Con Ian Critchley said he "will not rest" until they find those responsible for "facilitating or harbouring" the killer.

Merseyside Police believe Ms Edwards was not the target of the attack.

Ms Edwards was rushed to Arrowe Park Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police have arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, and a 19-year-old woman on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.

Speaking outside the Lighthouse, Mr Critchley said the force had "made great strides forward".

"We have two people in custody already, they are on warrants of further detention, but I am still appealing for information," he said.

"To be murdered in the most horrific and brutal way by the most cowardly of actions is quite incomprehensible for us all."

He said the public are "appalled" and "scared" but have provided "some tremendous intelligence and community support to help us with our investigation".

Asked if he could directly link the shooting to a feud between gangs in Wirral, Mr Critchley said: "We have seen over a number of months some level of escalation here."

He said the force had made a number of arrests and drugs and weapons seizures and "the small few cowards who seek to prey on the vulnerability of others for their own greed" will not be tolerated.

Cody Fisher: Murder arrests over Birmingham nightclub stabbing - BBC

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murdering a man who was stabbed to death on a nightclub dance floor in Birmingham.

Cody Fisher, 23, who was a non-league footballer and school sports coach, was attacked at The Crane nightclub, just before midnight on Boxing Day.

Paying tribute, his family said his death had "broken our hearts".

A 22-year-old man was arrested in Birmingham just after midnight. A second man, 21, was arrested in London.

The incident happened just before 23:45 GMT at the club, on Adderley Street, Digbeth, where police believe he was approached by a group before being stabbed.

West Midlands Police said it had been pleased with the public response and had received photos and statements which were helping the investigation.

Mr Fisher played left-back for clubs including Bromsgrove Sporting, Stourbridge and Stratford Town.

Walsall Football Club, where Mr Fisher had previously played, held a minute's silence before youth team training on Wednesday.

Woodrow First School, where Mr Fisher coached children, said everyone had been left devastated over the tragic and needless death of the "bright, friendly and talented young man".

"Many of the children at school know Cody as their sports coach and have enjoyed working with him," it tweeted.

Tributes will be held at a match against Stratford on 2 January, Bromsgrove Sporting chairman Mike Burke said.

He added the event would be an opportunity to "show our love and respect to him on that day".

"There's nothing we can say can make the family feel any better, but we can just send our thoughts out to them at this really sad time," Mr Burke said.

Steve Beech, who worked at Stourbridge when Mr Fisher signed for the team, said he had watched as tributes had "flooded in" for the player.

The non-league world in the West Midlands was "one big family" he said, adding that he and others had been left "devastated" at the news.

Describing him as a "special player", former Stratford Town manager Dean Holdsworth said it was "very difficult to comprehend that this sort of news could come out about one of your friends, one of your family and one of your players on what seems like a normal party evening".

Other clubs, including Birmingham City, paid their own tributes.

It tweeted: "The thoughts of everyone at Blues are with Cody Fisher's family and friends at this extremely difficult time."

Cody had been in the Birmingham City FC Academy and was also a trainee with Walsall, according to social media and local media posts.

Stratford-on-Avon MP Nadhim Zahawi tweeted he had contacted the chairman of Stratford Town to offer any help he could.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Cody's family and the Team in Stratford," the cabinet minister said.

"Those committing such mindless violence/crimes must be brought to justice."

Det Ch Insp Ian Ingram, from West Midlands Police, said "good progress" was being made in the investigation.

"We've been really pleased with the response from the public and have already had a number of witness accounts and images sent through, which will help with our investigation."

"It's vital that we hear from everybody who saw any part of what happened that night - no matter how insignificant they think it might be."

The force said hundreds of people were in the nightclub at the time and that it had set up a dedicated website where images and footage from the night could be uploaded.

In a statement, the venue said its staff were "deeply shocked and saddened" by the incident and were working closely with investigators.

Merseyside Police have 'tremendous intelligence' over pub killing of Elle Edwards - but no sign of gun - Sky News

Police investigating the shooting of Elle Edwards on Christmas Eve say they've had "some tremendous intelligence" but are still searching for the gun that killed her.

Forensic officers remained at the Lighthouse Inn on Wednesday, the pub where the 26-year-old was killed on Christmas Eve.

The area outside and part of the car park remained behind a cordon four days after Ms Edwards was killed while out with friends in Wallasey Village, Merseyside.

Deputy Chief Constable Ian Critchley said police "had received some tremendous intelligence and community support to help us with our investigation".

He said officers "will not rest" until they get justice for Ms Edwards' family.

"I am still appealing for information in relation to anybody who knows who the person was responsible for pulling that trigger in the most indiscriminate, most appalling way," he told reporters.

"Anybody who knows where the weapon is, anybody who has harboured or has any information at all, we still want to hear from them."

On Boxing Day, a man aged 30 from Tranmere was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, and a woman aged 18 from Rock Ferry was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.

Ms Edwards' family has been left "devastated" and "inconsolable" by her death, police said in their appeal to the public for information.

Friends of Ms Edwards told Sky News they were dancing and enjoying a night out when "in a split second" everything changed.

Meg and Jess, who did not give their surnames, told Sky News they thought the gunshots they heard were fireworks until they saw their friend lying on the floor.

"We went to go get a drink and we were at the bar and we just heard bangs," Jess said.

"The second I heard Elle, I was like, 'It's not, it's not, it's not'.

"I could see her on the floor, people around her trying to help her.

"You just feel hopeless, you can't help, you can't do anything."

Ms Edwards' sister Meg, who lives in Dubai, had left the venue sometime earlier.

"It plays on your mind, knowing whether she should have gone home," she said, adding: "We had been dancing and singing and now she's on the floor."

Members of the Wirral community have also been paying emotional tributes to Ms Edwards.

Wirral Borough Council leader Jeanette Williams said the "most heart-breaking aspect" was that she was not the intended target of the attack.

On Wednesday, Merseyside police renewed their appeal for anyone with information or dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone footage to come forward.

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy pledged a "relentless" search for those responsible for the "callous and cold-blooded murder".

Strikes: Airport, rail and driving test staff resume strikes - BBC

Border Force staff are beginning the second in a series of strikes at UK airports until New Year's Eve.

Around 1,000 members of the PCS union, many of whom work in passport control, will walk out from 28 to 31 December.

Rail disruption will also continue on Wednesday and Thursday, with TSSA union members at Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains on strike.

Driving examiners are continuing a rolling walkout which will continue into January.

The Border Force strikes are over pay, jobs and conditions as the cost of living rises.

Civil servants will join military personnel to cover the strikers at Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and Glasgow airports, as well as the Port of Newhaven.

Earlier strikes from 23 to 26 December caused minimal disruption. A spokesperson for Heathrow said immigration halls for travellers were "free flowing" and that the airport experienced "no issues" resulting from the first series of strikes.

Meanwhile, driving examiners and rural payment officers at more than 250 sites across the UK are holding rolling strikes from 13 December to 16 January.

Members of the PCS union at 71 driving test centres in eastern England and the Midlands will be on strike over five days from Wednesday.

The PCS is calling for a 10% pay rise, better pensions, job security and no cuts to redundancy terms for all its members but the government has said the requested pay rises are "unaffordable".

Ahead of the first wave of airport staff strikes, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said his priorities were to reduce inflation.

"Part of that is being responsible when it comes to setting public sector pay. In the long term it's the right thing for the whole country that we beat inflation," Mr Sunak said.

Disruption to travel is also expected during upcoming rail strikes in January.

TSSA members who work for Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains will walk out from midday on Wednesday 28 December until midnight on Thursday. Talks between the union and two rail firms have yet to result in an agreement.

Nadine Rae, organising director at the TSSA, told the BBC the union believed negotiations had been progressing - but after almost four weeks of talks, the result was "completely different from what we were talking about".

That suggested the government "had interfered with the negotiation process", said Ms Rae.

A spokesperson for the Department for Transport said the transport secretary and rail minister had "worked hard to facilitate a fair and reasonable offer and it is incredibly disappointing that some continue to strike".

"We urge them to step back, reconsider and get back round the table, so we can start 2023 by ending this damaging dispute."

Separately, members of the TSSA employed by Network Rail, which owns and maintains the UK's rail system, have already agreed a deal over pay and conditions.

They will get at least a 9% wage rise over two years and there will be no compulsory redundancies until the end of January in 2025.

The latest wave of rail staff strikes is expected to disrupt journeys for those travelling back to work after Christmas and New Year breaks.

RMT union members at Network Rail will resume their strike action over pay and conditions on Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 January.

They will walk out again on 6 and 7 January and there is a ban on any overtime for RMT members from 18 December to 2 January.

The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) said the striking RMT rail staff would mean only around 20% of services will operate and "half of the network will shut down".

"There are likely to be even fewer services on 5 January due to a strike by drivers who belong to [the union] Aslef," the RDG warned.
