Heartbroken dad desperately tried to save wife, son and best pal in Loch Lomond drowning tragedy - Daily Record

A heartbroken dad has described how he desperately tried to save his wife, son and best friend from drowning at Loch Lomond.

Waris Ali's wife Edina Olahova, 29, and nine year-old son Rana Haris Ali died along with close family friend Muhammad Asim Riaz, 41, in the tragedy at Pulpit Rock near Ardlui.

Muhammad's seven-year-old son is fighting for his life in hospital.

The group had stopped at the beauty spot on the way home to Glasgow following a trip to Skye.

What was an innocent day at the Loch turned tragic after Muhammad's son suddenly plunged from a sandy ridge into a deep swell after he had gone paddling with Waris' son.

Waris described how his son ran into the water to save his friend despite the fact he couldn't swim as the group tried desperately to rescue both boys.

Speaking from his garden in Parkhouse, Glasgow, Waris told Sky News: "The kids were playing and jumping around in the water. We were just thinking they were playing - that there wasn't deep water.

"At first it looked safe but when I put my first foot down it was deep water.

"At first my friend's son went in and then my son entered the water to save him.

"I ran in and when I came out from the water I saw my wife's hand. I pulled off my shirt to see if she could grab it. I would have sacrificed myself but I couldn't swim, I didn't see, I couldn't do anything."

Waris was so shocked that he could not bring himself to ring the emergency services.

Instead, a passing family stopped and called 999.

Waris said: "I couldn't properly talk. A Scottish family came to help. The emergency services took half an hour to come and the police too.

"It took three hours to bring out the bodies. Afterwards I had a pain in my chest and shoulder and was taken to hospital."

Heartbroken Waris paid tribute to his family and friends.

He said: "They were very good, caring and very nice.

"The two boys were very best friends - like family. My friend was like a brother to me and a very good person."

Six people, including four children died in water tragedies across the weekend, in what was described as the "worst weekend" for incidents like this.

Alasdair Perry, a deputy assistant chief officer for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, told Good Morning Scotland: “This is the worst weekend in relation to incidents of this nature I can remember and I’d like to offer my condolences and those of everyone at the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to all those affected by this weekend’s tragic events, and in particular to the friends and families of all those involved.”
