Sturgeon blasted: SNP spark fury by setting up own ‘college’ to preach nationalism - Daily Express

Nationalists party chiefs have launched “SNP college”, a new virtual learning platform consisting of up to 35 courses and 238 lessons surrounding party policies. Like attending school, party members can get points and badges for participating in the courses.

But critics claim after 14 years in power, the SNP-led Scottish Government and party have got their education priorities wrong.

The Scottish Tories say Nicola Sturgeon's party presided over cuts of 3,000 teachers in Scotland’s schools as well as seeing Scotland slide down international league tables.

Promoting the new concept, an email from Peter Murrell, chief executive of the SNP and Ms Sturgeon's husband, said: “There is something for everyone - from the newest member to the most experienced Campaigner.

“Check it out. You'll kick off with an introductory course.

“After that, select a course that interests you. We've arranged the categories to help you move through, but you can select any course.”

The platform includes a course called “Party History” which teaches supporters about the origins of the concept of Scottish Nationalism and the SNP.

Meanwhile, a second course branded “The ALBA Method” helps campaigners to persuade undecided Scots “to support SNP policies including Scottish independence.”

The method, the party says, involves members constantly using the Gaelic name of Scotland known as Alba.

It adds: “This course utilizes the name for our country to create a memorable aide de memoire to encourage SNP activists to Ask, Listen, Believe and Agree with undecided voters.”

Jamie Greene, Scottish Conservative Education spokesperson claimed it was “beyond ironic to see the SNP set up their own college when they’ve spent their time in charge decimating thousands of college places across Scotland.”

The West Scotland MSP added: “Their 14-year stewardship of Scottish education has seen thousands of teachers lost from classrooms, subject choice reduced and the attainment gap widen.

“The SNP never tire of saying education is their number one priority, but no-one knew they meant educating their members on the history of the SNP.

“If only the SNP put in half the effort they’ve put into this vanity project into our actual colleges, they would be in a better place."

Parent campaigners said the Nationalists priorities should be reopening schools after Nicola Sturgeon said most in-person teaching would likely be suspended until 1st February due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Education Secretary John Swinney this week pledged £45 million for local authorities to support schools, which can be used to either recruit additional staff or to buy laptops and other devices for home learning.

Jo Bisset, organiser for UsForThem Scotland, said: “In terms of education, the SNP’s priority should be getting schools back open as soon as possible.

“If the prospectus for the SNP college focuses solely on the importance of kids being in school, then I’m sure parents across the country will be only too happy to sign up.”

In response, SNP MSP George Adam said: "Thanks to the SNP, Scotland has the highest level of education investment per head in the UK - including over £576 million invested since 2015/16 in tackling the attainment gap.

“Teacher numbers are the highest they’ve been in a decade and we have the best pupil to teacher ratio in the UK – with class sizes significantly smaller than in Tory-run England.

“We also introduced a national minimum school clothing grant of £100 to help families afford uniform costs and have ensured all children in primaries 1 to 3 have access to free school meals – while the Tories had to be shamed into supporting their poorest pupils.

“We’ve scrapped tuition fees too and record numbers of students from the most deprived communities are now winning a place at university while the Tories in Westminster impose crippling fees of up to £9000 a year in England.

"While opposition politicians carp from the side lines, the SNP will be proud to stand on our record of tackling the attainment gap,  boosting teacher numbers, cutting class sizes and investing record sums in education at the election in May."
