Scotland ‘will be independent within a decade’, shock UK poll finds - Daily Record

Voters across the UK believe Scotland is likely to become independent within the next decade – while more than half of those in Northern Ireland want a referendum on a united Ireland in the next five years, according to a series of polls.

Surveys across all four countries of the UK were used to gauge increasingly strained attitudes to the future of the union.

In Scotland, the survey commissioned by the Sunday Times is the 20th in a row to put independence in the lead.

The poll found 49% backed independence compared to 44% against – a margin of 52% to 48% if the undecideds are excluded.

It comes as the SNP set out a new "road map" to independence in a bid to get round total opposition from the Conservative government at Westminster.

SNP depute leader Keith Brown said: "By imposing a devastating hard Brexit in the middle of a global pandemic, causing chaos for our fishing industry, grabbing powers from the Scottish Parliament and denying democracy in a Trump-like fashion, the Tories have shown they cannot be trusted to act in the interests of the people of Scotland."

Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross said the SNP push for independence is "reckless".

"Most Scots will wonder why time, energy and resources are going into pursuing an illegal referendum when we are facing far bigger challenges as a country right now than the constitution," he said.

In Northern Ireland, 47% still want to remain in the UK, with 42% in favour of a United Ireland and a significant proportion – 11% – undecided.

However, asked if they supported a referendum on a United Ireland within the next five years, 51% said yes compared to 44% who were against.

Across all four nations, more voters expected Scotland to be out of the UK within 10 years than thought it would still remain.

In England, the margin was 49% to 19%, in Northern Ireland it was 60% to 28%, in Wales 49% to 23% and in Scotland itself 49% to 30%.

With crucial elections to the Scottish Parliament coming up in May, the poll found the SNP way ahead on 70% – up seven points since the last elections in 2016 – while the Tories were down six points on 25%, with Labour down five points on 19%.
