Glasgow knife attacker snapped after row over noise with fellow asylum seeker at hotel - Daily Record

The man whose stabbing frenzy left six people, including a police officer, seriously injured had spent three weeks in his hotel room fearing he had Covid – then didn’t want to come out.

Badreddin Abadlla Adam launched his knife attack at Glasgow’s Park Inn after a row with a fellow asylum seeker in a neighbouring room over noise, the Record can reveal.

Sources have told how:

● The 28-year-old was a loner who refused to speak to other asylum seekers.

● He was furious at a lack of action from the Home Office over his return home to Sudan in north Africa.

● After being told his isolation was over, he didn’t want to leave his room.

● He had dreams of finishing university where he had been studying IT.

Last night, PC David Whyte, 42, who was the first officer on the scene, was recovering in hospital after being stabbed when he heroically tried to tackle the knifeman.

Two male hotel workers were also seriously injured along with three other asylum seekers.

Adam had fled Sudan and is believed to have been in Germany before coming to the UK, where he had been for six months.

It’s also understood he had spent some time in Ireland and has family in Manchester.

Since the coronavirus pandemic, Adam and hundreds of other asylum seekers in Glasgow were moved into empty hotel rooms to stem the spread of the virus.

Sources said he made a request to withdraw his asylum application after spending three weeks isolated in his room after suffering Covid-19 symptoms.

But his application had not progressed due to delays caused by the pandemic lockdown.

It’s believed Adam snapped on Friday following a row with another Sudanese asylum seeker in another room at the West George Street hotel. It is believed Adam said noise was stopping him from sleeping.

A witness said it’s thought the attacker may have reached the end of his tether and lashed out.

They said: “He had asked for a voluntary return. He wanted to go home but because of the Covid situation all those things have ground to a halt and nothing was happening.

“Maybe, following the argument, he just thought it wasn’t worth it. It’s sad to think he’s gone to such extremes.”

Adam had been in the hotel since the beginning of April.

The witness said: “He never came to anybody’s attention. All the asylum seekers generally sit in groups on the steps of the hotel or the business next door as it has been closed.

"Different nationalities – boys from Sudan, Sierra Leone and the Kurds – sit in different groups.

“He never sat with them. He always sat by himself across the street from them, on his own.

"He didn’t hang about with the other Sudanese lads, he kept himself to himself. He didn’t mix with anybody, it seemed.”

Shortly after being housed in the hotel, the attacker reported having Covid-like symptoms and was told to self-isolate in his room for three weeks.

The witness added: “He didn’t want to stop. He was anxious about the whole thing and after the three weeks he had to be convinced that he couldn’t keep isolating continually.”

Last Thursday night, Adam became agitated and aggressive towards another Sudanese asylum seeker in a neighbouring bedroom.

A source said: “He got into an argument with a guy through the wall from him and threatened him. It was about his neighbour being noisy. He said he couldn’t get to sleep because of it.

“A housing liaison worker chapped his door in the morning, brought him down and spoke to him with an interpreter to find out what the issues were.

“It was about half an hour before the attack started and he seemed calm. They sat and talked and the boy seemed to take on board what was being said. If he had any problems, he should go to them rather than threatening people.”

Another source said: “He was out to get someone that day and has flipped after spending too much time in his room.

“This could have been a lot worse had it not been for the quick actions of the police. Had he got out into the street, it would have been utter terror.”

Yesterday, asylum seekers had been moved to the nearby Hallmark hotel in the city’s Washington Street.

One asylum seeker who was caught up in the horror attack told how quick-thinking police officers saved his life.

Mohammad Nikar, from Albania, said he had been out shopping at a supermarket when he returned to the hotel.

He had gone up to his room and was disturbed by the fire alarm.

He said: “I went out into the hotel and there was blood everywhere and armed police officers. That was frightening.

"I was worried they would think I had something to do with it but the officer said, ‘Don’t worry, let’s go. Everything will be all right but we have to get you out of here.’

"The police were so professional and kind. He saved my life.”

Mohammad also rejected claims by other asylum seekers that the conditions at the hotel had led to the attack.

He said: “The hotel was very nice. It’s a good standard hotel and lovely inside. You get fed and the staff could not do more for you. One of the receptionists would say, ‘Happy days’ when he saw you to cheer you up. The staff were kind and always smiling.”

Mohammad added: “Scotland is a very nice country. The people are so friendly. You go to have a drink in a bar and you make friends instantly.

“I think he had something wrong with him inside.”
