Armed police have found the man suspected of the crossbow murders of the wife and two daughters of BBC racing commentator John Hunt.

Officers and paramedics had rushed to a cemetery in Enfield, north London, following a huge manhunt that lasted most of Wednesday for Kyle Clifford, 26.

He was found in the Enfield area and was treated for injuries, police said. Hertfordshire Police said their officers did not fire any shots.

Clifford, who left the British Army in 2022 following a brief period of service, was wanted over the deaths of Carol Hunt, 61, and the couple’s two daughters, Hannah, 28, and Louise, 25.

The three women were found with serious injuries after officers were called to a property in Bushey on Tuesday evening.

During the manhunt, the force said they believed Clifford may have been armed with a crossbow and warned the public not to approach him.

Home secretary Yvette Cooper said she was being kept fully updated about the “truly shocking” deaths.

A Home Office spokeswoman said Ms Cooper would consider the findings of a call for evidence on crossbows to see whether laws need to be tightened further.

Helicopters flew over area

A neighbour said he returned from holiday on Tuesday night to the overwhelming sound of helicopters hovering over his area.

Michael Murchan said when he arrived home from Spain he soon found out about the horror that had just unfolded in his neighbourhood.

He added that one of the victims was in the same friendship group as his nephew.

“It’s awful,” he said. “Such a shame.”

Woman who grew up with sisters remembers ‘super-nice and friendly’ family

A local resident who grew up with the Hunt family and played with Louise and Hannah when they were children described the family as “super-nice and friendly”.

The 22-year-old woman, who did not want to be identified, said John and Carol Hunt would often be seen walking their dogs together in the local area.

She said: “I feel so bad for the dad. I saw him just two weeks ago.”

The family friend added that Hannah worked as a beautician and Louise as a dog groomer.

Deaths overwhelming, say neighbours

A husband and wife who knew the victims paid tribute to the family as “nice and friendly” neighbours who would always wave and say “hello” as they walked their dogs past their house, writes Tara Cobham.

Simon and Tracey Bowler, who have children who are similar ages to the victims, spoke of how “emotional”, overwhelming” and “really sad” it was to hear of the three women’s deaths.

Drescribing the area as quiet and residential, Ms Bowler said she had lived in Bushey for more than a decade and knew John Hunt through the local gym.

Police had ‘overwhelming’ volume of calls from public

Police say they had an overwhelming number of calls from the public while they were hunting for murder suspect Kyle Clifford.

Detective Inspector Justine Jenkins from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said: “This continues to be an incredibly difficult time for the victims’ family and we would ask that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with what has happened.

“This investigation is moving at pace and formal identification of the victims is yet to take place. The premature naming of potential victims has caused great upset to the family when they should’ve been given the space to come to terms with their sudden loss.

“Following extensive enquiries, the suspect has been located and nobody else is being sought in connection with the investigation at this time.

“We have had an overwhelming number of calls and would like to express our gratitude to the members of the public who have contacted us.

“We would still appeal for anyone with information or footage to please contact police directly and refrain from commenting on social media as this could affect the progress of the case.

“We have set up an information portal where people can submit any information, photos or video footage which they feel could assist us with our investigation.

“This incident will of course be of concern to local residents. Additional local officers will be in the area today so please do speak to them if you need to.”

Joe Biden hints UK should move closer to EU in Starmer meeting - The Guardian

Joe Biden has appeared to back Keir Starmer’s ambition for the UK having a closer relationship with the European Union as the leaders held their first bilateral talks at the White House.

The US president called the US and the UK the “best of allies” as he met the prime minister in the Oval Office, describing Britain as the “knot” that tied the transatlantic relationship together.

He suggested the closer the UK was with Europe, the tighter the knot would be. “I kind of see you guys as the knot tying the transatlantic alliance together, the closer you are with Europe,” he told Starmer.

Biden has long had a close interest in Brexit, repeatedly warning that peace in Northern Ireland must not be jeopardised as a result of complications caused by the UK’s decision to leave the EU.

Starmer has used the Nato summit in Washington to underline the UK’s commitment to the alliance, as well as to Ukraine, confirming that he will stick with plans to spend at least £3bn every year on military support to Kyiv for “as long as is it takes” in its conflict with Russia.

But he is also using the summit to build relationships with European leaders as he tries to seal an EU-UK security pact, and has been joined on the trip by Nick Thomas-Symonds, his minister for European relations.

At the bilateral meeting, Starmer congratulated Biden on hosting the 75th anniversary of the summit, hailing “a bigger Nato, a stronger Nato and a Nato with the resolve that we need”.

“The special relationship is so important. It’s forged in difficult circumstances, endured for so long, and stronger now than ever. I’m very pleased to be able to come so early in government to recommit to Nato, to recommit to the special relationship and to discuss these affairs with you.”

His first meeting with the US president would normally be a highlight, but with questions raging about Biden’s health and age and the American election just four months away, it called for careful choreography.

Keir Starmer watching football on a screen with another man with his back to the camera

At the start of their talks Biden was asked by reporters about George Clooney’s article in the New York Times stating that Biden should stand down as the Democrat presidential candidate, but the president just shrugged.

Biden was also asked about the England football team’s victory earlier in the day. “Good news indeed. It’s all because of the prime minister,” he said.

Starmer was asked by reporters if “football is coming home”. “It looks like it,” he replied. A visibly delighted prime minister told the president: “I began to watch the game with the Netherlands prime minister, but we left at 1-1.”

Biden threw his head back and laughed, revealing a glistening set of teeth. “And you guys are still talking to one another?” he joked.

The prime minister, a passionate football fan, had earlier given the president an Arsenal shirt with the name “Biden” and the number 46 on the back – a reference to his status as the 46th US president.

“It’s [Starmer’s] team and [he] thought it would make a personal gift,” a senior No 10 official said. Starmer has previously given Emmanuel Macron, the French president, an Arsenal top as a gift.

He also gave Biden a framed copy of the original Atlantic charter that led to the formation of Nato, with the then Labour prime minister Clement Attlee’s amendments.

After the talks, the Bidens were hosting Starmer, who has been accompanied by his wife, Victoria, to Washington, and other Nato leaders and their partners at a glitzy White House dinner.

Home secretary to ‘take a view in near future’ on whether tougher crossbow laws needed

Yvette Cooper will “take a view in the near future” of whether tougher crossbow laws are needed in the wake of the killings of three women in Hertfordshire on Wednesday, the security minister has said, as the home secretary urgently considers the change.

Dan Jarvis told Sky News: “I know that the home secretary is looking at this literally as we speak. There was a call for evidence that was initiated a number of months ago. She will want to consider that evidence in the round.

“She’ll want to look clearly, very carefully at what happened yesterday – devastating events – and she will take a view in the near future.”

Water bills set to rise by £94 over next five years - BBC.com

Water bills set to rise by £19 a year from January

Woman filling water bottle - stock shot

Water bills in England and Wales are set to rise by an average £94 over the next five years, the water regulator Ofwat has said.

The figure varies by region with Thames customers seeing an increase of £99 or 23%, Anglian £66 or 13% and Southern Water £183, an increase of 44%.

The typical £19 a year increase is a third less than the increase requested by companies and is intended to fund investment for improvements such as replacing leaking pipes and reducing sewage discharges into rivers and seas.

It comes as suppliers face increasing scrutiny over their environmental and financial performance over a number of years.

Labour has pledged a crackdown on the industry, promising consumers higher compensation for sewage failures and the power to hold water executives to account.

The new Secretary of State for Environment Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Reed, is meeting water company bosses on Thursday to discuss performance issues and ways of improving it.

Ofwat's proposed bill rises can be challenged by the water firms, with a final determination due at the end of the year.

Ofwat chief executive David Black said its plan marked the "biggest ever" investment in the water sector and would mean "sustained improvement to customer service and the environment at a fair price for customers."

He told Radio 4's Today Programme it was "very concerned" about the level of bonuses that the companies are paying.

"That’s why we have introduced new measures to protect customers. In the last year, no customer paid for executive bonuses."

The UK's biggest water firm, Thames Water, is being put under fresh scrutiny by the regulator, with a new "oversight regime" to make sure the company improves its performance.

Ofwat said Thames Water must provide a "delivery action plan" and regularly report on progress, assessed by a third party.

The regulator said it was considering appointing an independent monitor to report on the company's progress.

The government plans to introduce new measures to ensure that money earmarked for investment and improvements are ringfenced and cannot be diverted to pay salaries or dividends.

Customer panels will have powers to hold directors and executives to account while compensation for customers for failures to hit required standards could be more than doubled.

The crackdown comes at a time of rising consumer anger at pollution but also at a time when some companies - including heavily indebted Thames Water - have asked for leniency due to financial distress.

'High levels of pollution'

Dave Wallace
Dave Wallace has stopped swimming in the Thames at Henley

Dave Wallace is a citizen scientist who has been testing the water in the River Thames where he lives in Henley.

“We started last year with our testing after some kids got ill,” he said.

“Also I’d been swimming and found myself swimming in what I’d describe as solids and started wondering what on earth is going on.

“We’ve actually found high levels of pollution and found very high levels of ecoli on the river.

“I’ve stopped swimming because we know people are getting sick from going in the river.”

He said there had been reports of an increase in sickness and diarrhoea as well as people getting infected sores and contracting sepsis.

“It’s not just people but dogs as well there’s lots of reports of dogs getting ill from going in the water,” he said.

Two children from Liverpool primary school dealing with infection outbreak have died - Sky News

Two children who attended a primary school dealing with an infection outbreak have died.

The youngsters - reported to be aged five and six - were pupils at Millstead Primary School in Liverpool.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said it had been working with Liverpool City Council following a number of cases of giardia linked to the school.

However, the UKHSA said the deaths of the two children were "unlikely to be due to giardia".

Giardia is a parasite which can grow in the intestines of infected humans or animals and cause giardiasis, with the most common symptom being diarrhoea.

Emma Savage, a consultant in health protection at the UKHSA, said the agency was "aware of the sad deaths of two children who attend Millstead Primary School and our thoughts are with the family, friends and school community".

"The deaths are unlikely to be due to giardia," she added.

"Giardia usually causes a self-limiting gastrointestinal illness which can spread easily in households and school settings."

The Liverpool Echo reported the school has been closed for a week in a bid to tackle the infection outbreak.

Ms Savage said: "Investigations are ongoing, and we have provided information and advice to the school and parents. Public health measures have been put in place to help prevent further cases."

In a statement to Sky News, Millstead headteacher Michelle Beard said: "The entire Millstead School community is devastated to have learned of the sad recent passing of two of our younger children.

"We have sent our sincerest condolences to both of their families.

"Both children filled their classes with joy during their time with us, and they will forever be in our hearts.

"We are working closely with our families, staff and pupils to support them as we come to terms with this terribly sad news."

Politics latest news: Starmer must spend 3pc on defence, says ex-MI6 boss - The Telegraph

The UK should be spending 3 per cent of GDP or more on defence, a former head of MI6 has said as Sir Keir Starmer faced pressure over his plans for the armed forces.

Sir Richard Dearlove said neither of the main political parties during the general election campaign had “described to the voters the seriousness of the situation that we face at the moment” amid rising global instability.

He told Times Radio: “In my view, actually our defence expenditure should be around 3 per cent, maybe even a bit higher. The Poles are already spending 3.9 per cent and gonna go even higher. There is an urgency. This is a major problem.

“It’s more important, and you know, people won’t accept this from me, it’s more important than the National Health Service, I’m sorry.”

Sir Richard made the comments as Sir Keir attended a Nato summit in Washington DC today in his first international trip as Prime Minister.

Labour has pledged to increase defence spending to 2.5 per cent of GDP but has not set a deadline. Sir Keir has refused to guarantee hitting the number in his first term in office.

Police hunting a man in connection with a triple murder in Hertfordshire fear he may be armed with a crossbow.

Three women were found with serious injuries after officers were called to a property in Bushey on Tuesday evening.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the women – who are believed to be related – died at the scene in Ashlyn Close shortly after emergency services arrived just before 7pm, Hertfordshire Police said.

Police have been searching through the night for 26-year-old Kyle Clifford from the Enfield area. It is believed he could be in Hertfordshire or north London.

“Given the serious nature of the incident, I would ask anyone who knows where he is to contact police immediately. If you believe you see him, please do not approach him and dial 999 straight away. He may still be in possession of a weapon,” said Detective Superintendent Rob Hall.

He added: “This is an incredibly difficult incident for the victims’ family and we would ask that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with what has happened.”

Neighbour laments ‘tragic’ situation

A man who lives close to the murder scene in Bushey said the incident was “tragic”.

Riaz, who is in his 50s and declined to give a second name, said: “At 6 o’clock, my wife called me while I was at work, saying ‘there are so many police cars down the road which I’ve never seen before’, and she was distressed.

“I didn’t know [what had happened] at that point, then at that very moment my nephew phoned me saying something tragic had happened and was I okay? I came early evening and I saw the cars and realised something tragic had happened.”

“It’s a serene, quiet road, but there was over a dozen cars here. It’s quite disturbing, but any tragedy like this has a bearing on how you feel.”

He added: “This has been an awful situation and I can’t even imagine what the family must be going through.”
