Sunak warned of Tory revolt after David Cameron bombshell cabinet reshuffle - live - The Independent

Suella Braverman sacked as home secretary by Rishi Sunak after pro-Palestine march row

Rishi Sunak has risked reigniting a Conservative civil war following his shocking cabinet reshuffle on Monday.

The prime minister caused a political sensation by firing Suella Braverman and appointing David Cameron as foreign secretary in a reshuffle of his top team.

The prime minister sacked home secretary after claims that she incited violent protests by far right thugs at the Cenotaph on Armistice Day.

Mr Sunak now faces the threat of a revolt from the Tory right, many of whom backed Ms Braverman’s provocative comments on “hateful” pro-Palestinian protestors that led to her dismissal.

He was told to “prepare for war”, as right-wingers keen on revolt claimed that at least 54 of Ms Braverman’s outraged supporters could soon submit letters of no confidence and trigger a vote in his leadership.

Andrea Jenkyns, an arch-Boris Johnson loyalist, became the first MP to publicly submit a no-confidence letter in Mr Sunak on Monday night, declaring “enough is enough”.

Ms Braverman was replaced by James Cleverly, whose old foreign secretary brief was taken up by Mr Cameron, who was forced to resign as PM in 2016 after losing the EU referendum.

Labour shadow chancellor criticises set-up of the House of Lords

Labour shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves has criticised the set-up of the House of Lords.

She told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that the current configuration is “totally unjustifiable” and

“I think that the current set-up of the House of Lords is totally unjustifiable,” she said.

“850 and rising members of the House of Lords, a couple of hundred more than we have in the House of Commons.

“Non-elected, unaccountable, I don’t think that stacks up in the 21st century.”

She added that a Labour government would reform the Lords.

“For me, that would start with getting rid of the hereditary peers, which cannot be justified,” she said.

“We want a second chamber that represents the nations and the regions of the United Kingdom.”

Sunak brings Brexiteer Andrea Leadsom back into government

Andrea Leadsom has been brought back into the fold as a junior minister in the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).

Rishi Sunak will be hoping that the return of the right-wing Brexiteer – formerly business secretary – will placate those angry at Ms Braverman’s exit.

In a flurry of late-night appointments, Mr Sunak has also brought Laura Farris and Bim Afolami into the government as a minister in the Home Office and Ministry of Justice, and economic secretary to the Treasury, respectively.

Simon Hoare was appointed to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, meaning the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee will need to find a new chair.

New Tory chairman says Braverman is 'totally entitled’ to her opinions

New Tory chairman Richard Holden has said that Suella Braverman is “totally entitled” to her opinions.

It comes as Westminster awaits a public response from the former home secretary to her sacking, amid fears of a right-wing backlash against Rishi Sunak.

Mr Holden declined to give a view on her sacking but told Sky News that Mrs Braverman “is totally entitled to her opinions”.

“I just say that all of us want to work collectively for the good of the country.”

He has also stressed the need for unity across his party after backbench MP Dame Andrea Jenkyns submitted a no confidence letter in the Prime Minister.

Rishi Sunak facing right-wing backlash for sacking Suella and appointing Cameron - The Independent

Rishi Sunak is facing a backlash from right-wing Tory MPs with a warning that Suella Braverman’s sacking as part of a shock cabinet reshuffle is a mistake.

The PM ousted his home secretary after days of pressure over her claim of police bias in favour of pro-Palestinian protesters, her attack on “hate marches” and description of homelessness as a “lifestyle choice”.

And, in a a stunning return to frontline politics, Mr Sunak appointed moderate former PM David Cameron as his new foreign secretary, with James Cleverly becoming home secretary.

But Mr Sunak has been told to “prepare for war” – warned that the move could provoke a full-scale revolt by more than 50 of her right-wing supporters keen for her to succeed Mr Sunak as party leader.

Ms Braverman’s spoke out against the decision, with ex-business secretary Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg saying he had made a “mistake”.

The former business secretary said Ms Braverman “understands what the country thinks about migration” and was “committed to delivering something that the country thinks is important”.

“From the point of view of the Conservatives winning the next election, today is a mistake because Suella understood what the British voter thought and was trying to do something about it,” he told GB News.

Sir Jacob added that Lord Cameron is a “highly intelligent, capable individual”, but said his return to the top of the Tory party could push some voters to Reform, the successor to the Brexit Party.

Mr Sunak faced weeks of warnings that sacking Ms Braverman – a key figure on the right of the party – would spark a rebellion of backbench MPs.

Suella Braverman has been sacked after she accused police of being bias

The chair of Tory members’ group the Conservative Democratic Organisation warned it would be a “kamikaze move” and said Mr Sunak “may as well put in 54 no-confidence letters himself”.

David Campbell Bannerman said on Monday that Conservative MPs were organising behind the scenes and “the numbers are now there” for a no confidence vote in Mr Sunak.

If 54 backbench Tories submit letters of no confidence to the 1922 committee, Mr Sunak would face a confidence vote in his leadership. But moderate Tory MPs dismissed the claims, and suggested the number of MPs who back Ms Braverman was much lower.

Amid the almost immediate backlash to Mr Sunak’s reshuffle, Andrea Jenkyns said Ms Braverman had been “sacked for speaking the truth”.

“I support Suella Braverman … sacked for speaking the truth. Bad call by Rishi caving in to the left,” the right-winger said on X, formerly Twitter.

Former Tory MP Neil Parish, who was forced to quit after watching pornography in the House of Commons, said Mr Sunak should “prepare for war” over the sacking.

He told GB News: “Rishi Sunak better prepare for war I think because of course she is very much, Suella, the standard bearer of the right of the party.”

Braverman has been sacked as home secretary as Rishi Sunak reshuffles his cabinet

However, senior Tory MP Stephen Hammond has said the right-wingers angry about Ms Braverman’s sacking don’t have the numbers to oust Mr Sunak, despite claims more than 50 are ready to send no-confidence letters in the PM.

“All too often the right has shown itself to be well organised and noisy so that the impact is somewhat larger than the reality of their numbers,” Mr Hammond – who said the sacking of Ms Braverman was “completely correct” - told The Independent.

“There may be lots of noise again. However, the PM has chosen to make this a more centrist and centre-right government which will guarantee him more support amongst colleagues.”

A centrist Tory MP said a leadership challenge by Ms Braverman and her backers is possible but unlikely as it would destroy the party.

“It depends what they care about more, revenge or winning the next election,” the MP told The Independent.

They added: “The appetite for another vote of no confidence is virtually non-existent and basically everybody agrees that if we do that again we might as well dissolve the party as it will be 100 years before we are taken seriously again.”

Sunak and Braverman were at odds over handling of pro-Palestine protests

And a senior Tory MP told The Independent said the idea 54 Tory MPs would send a no-confidence vote as “nonsense” – saying Braverman had “nothing like” 54 backers. They said the “vast majority” of Tory MPs were against any change of leadership.

One right-wing Tory Philip Davies MP – a strong Braverman supporter and senior figure in the Common Sense Group, run by her mentor John Hayes MP – played down the idea of a confidence vote or push against Mr Sunak.

“It’s very sad as I agree with Suella on virtually everything, but I don’t think she left him [Mr Sunak] with much choice,” Mr Davies told The Independent.

Senior Tory Tobias Ellwood has welcomed the sacking of Ms Braverman and appointment of Mr Cameron. Ending Ms Braverman’s appeals to right-wing members offered a chance to article a “centre-right vision that looks beyond our party base,” and he told The Independent.

John Stevenson, leader of the Northern Research Group, told The Independent that Mr Sunak was right to sack her. “The way she was conducting herself was not right for a home secretary.”

Suella Braverman was accused of ‘trying to get fired’ in recent days

Mr Cameron’s appointment could shore up Tory support in the so-called blue wall of safe southern Conservative seats, where controversial outbursts from Ms Braverman were seen to be costing the party support.

But it risks sparking a rift with Brexiteers in the party after he campaigned to remain in the EU, and he is likely to face opposition over his reported lobbying for Chinese interests in the Indo-Pacific.

It also raises questions about Mr Sunak’s bid to paint himself as the candidate of change ahead of a general election expected next year.

The PM used his Tory conference speech to condemn 30 years of failed “status quo” politics, in which Mr Cameron played a significant role.

Labour pointed to Mr Sunak’s claims, mocking him for reappointing the former PM. Pat McFadden MP, Labour’s national campaign coordinator, said: “A few weeks ago, Rishi Sunak said David Cameron was part of a failed status quo, now he’s bringing him back as his life raft.

“This puts to bed the prime minister’s laughable claim to offer change from 13 years of Tory failure.”

The Irish national director for fire and emergency management has said Storm Debi is “probably the most intense storm” of the season so far.

He said there is a “general trend” of coastal flooding, for example in Galway City and Oranmore.

He told RTE radio: “But, thankfully, not too much structural damage being reported at the moment.”

Storm Debi 'developed rapidly overnight,' says Met Office

The Met Office says Storm Debi, the fourth named storm of the season, "developed rapidly overnight" and is now set to unleash heavy winds on the UK.

The storm has developed, in part, because of a very strong jet stream crossing the Atlantic, the forecaster says.

The core of the jet stream is currently located to the south of the UK.

This strong jet stream is responsible for the very unsettled period of weather we are currently experiencing. Further areas of low pressure are forecast to develop and affect the UK during the coming week.

“Storm Debi has developed rapidly overnight and will bring impacts across parts of the UK today," Matthew Lehnert, a Chief Meteorologist with the Met Office, says.

"Because of the particular risk of impacts to parts of County Armagh and County Down this morning and parts of northwest England through much of the day we have issued two amber wind warnings.”

Within the warning areas the strongest winds are expected to reach 75mph, or even 80mph, in exposed coastal locations today, while inland areas are expected to see gusts of 60-65mph.

Two amber wind warnings for southeast Northern Ireland and northwest England are embedded within broader yellow warnings already in force across the whole of Northern Ireland, northern England and parts of Wales.

Severe weather warnings extended to most of Ireland

The Irish meteorological agency has extended the area of the country which will fall under its highest level of wind warning ahead of Storm Debi, which forecasters warned carries a “potential danger to life”.

Storm Debi is ‘severe weather event’, says Irish head forecaster

The head forecaster at Irish meteorological agency Met Eireann has said Storm Debi is a “severe weather event” which will make its first impact in the south west of the country.

Speaking after a meeting of Ireland’s National Emergency Co-ordination Group (NECG), Eoin Sherlock said the storm will then track north east.

“We can expect some disruption with travel, some infrastructural issues such as power cables coming down.”

Mr Sherlock said it will affect people in commuter counties as they get ready to go to work.

He said there will be a substantial number of downed trees and other debris.

Storm Debi: 'Danger to life' weather warnings extended as 130kph winds set to hit UK - The Independent

Weather warning and ‘danger to life’ flood alert issued ahead of Storm Debi

Multiple “danger to life” weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office as Storm Debi is set to hit the UK within hours, bringing heavy rain and severe gale-force winds.

Weather warnings have been issued for large parts of the country, as the fourth storm of the season sweeps across Ireland before reaching northern England and parts of Wales today, with the potential for 130kph gusts in some areas.

The Met Office warned of “danger to life” from flying debris, “fast flowing or deep floodwater”, and large waves in some areas.

An amber warning is in place for Northwest England until 4pm for heavy winds while a yellow warning covers areas including Bangor and St Davids in Wales and Manchester, Sheffield and Liverpool in England.

Those in Aberdeenshire in Scotland face a yellow warning for rain later in the day, from 10am until 9pm.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland will have a yellow warning for both wind and rain from 3am to 2pm.

It comes after Storms Babet and Ciarán both wreaked havoc across the country over the past couple of months.
