Media reassurance campaign to get pupils back to school - BBC News

A campaign on radio, social and digital media to reassure parents and pupils it is safe to return to school in England has been launched by the government.

Science experiments, sport, music and drama are back on the timetable, now distancing rules, "bubble" groups and staggered starts have been axed.

And all secondary pupils are being urged to get tested either at school or in the community, before term starts.

Heads say uncertainty remains despite the relaxation of school Covid rules.

The Department for Education said schools and colleges would be maintaining proportionate protective measures.

'Huge moment'

These include a round of testing as school term starts, after which pupils will be encouraged to carry on the twice-weekly testing regime. Although, test results will be monitored by public health rather than schools themselves.

Schools will also use ventilation measures, such as opening windows, and extra hygiene precautions to help keep children and staff safe and minimise disruption.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said the return to school and college was a "huge moment".

"It is the point when our focus can shift away from the disruption of Covid and on to learning, enrichment and recovery," he said.

"I have every confidence that school and college staff, parents and students will continue to work together admirably, following pragmatic measures like testing and vaccinations to minimise disruption and keep children where they belong - in the classroom."

'Rising tide'

Attendance fell of dramatically towards the end of the summer term, as Covid cases were rising in the younger population.

But National Association of Head Teachers general secretary Paul Whiteman said: "Parents and pupils will see that arrangements for the start of this term are quite different to how things were at the end of the summer term.

"The government must make sure that families are familiar with these changes, so that they have the confidence to bring their children back in and that misunderstandings are kept to a minimum."

Association of School and College Leaders general secretary Geoff Barton said schools and colleges were hoping for the best - but there were concerns about the possible impact of Covid transmission among pupils, who were largely unvaccinated. .

"Our concerns are over the potential risk of a high number of infections among pupils which cause more educational disruption and may lead to some young people suffering serious symptoms," he said.

"It will be a case of seeing how all this plays out in reality, as the new term starts and progresses.

"But it will be very important that the government is ready to act in the event of a rising tide of coronavirus infections and provide further support to schools and colleges as necessary."

'Charm offensive'

The government campaign is being backed by Olympic swimming gold medallist Matt Richards and NHS consultant paediatrician and television presenter Dr Ranj Singh.

Dr Singh said there was a low risk of coronavirus in children compared with other ages groups.

But National Education Union joint general secretary Kevin Courtney said while teachers dearly wanted the return to school to be a success, it meant millions of people mixing together, which would inevitably lead to cases rising.

"This charm offensive from government to parents relies on the notion that the removal of safety requirements will magically transform school and college life," he said.

"However, its admission, last week, that CO2 [carbon-dioxide] monitors will be needed should be sufficient evidence that Gavin Williamson made a bad call when removing so many mitigations last term - and, once again, squandered the summer break.

"Sadly, CO2 monitors will not arrive soon enough and only diagnose problems not solve them."

'High threat' of terror attack at Kabul Airport, Brits warned amid Afghanistan evacuation - Daily Express

The warning comes as thousands of civilians continue to make their way to the airport in the aftermath of the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. On Wednesday, UK defence sources had voiced growing concerns about the possibility of a suicide bomb attack targeting the airport. Intelligence chiefs believed there was a "high risk" that extremists from Isis-K, an Islamic State-affiliated group, were plotting a deadly attack.

As a result, extra security measures were installed around the evacuation processing centre by the airport.

In a statement on its website, the Foreign Office said; "There is an ongoing and high threat of terrorist attack.

"Do not travel to Kabul Hamid Karzai International Airport.

"If you are in the area of the airport, move away to a safe location and await further advice."

British nationals were told if they could leave the country safely by other means then they "should do so immediately."

Earlier in the day, the UK Defence Secretary said there were few places left on British rescue flights from the Afghan capital.

“If they think they can make it to a third country, that may be a better option,” he replied.

He added: "I recommend that they try and make it to the border … because it is higher profile going to the airport.

"That is where the Taliban will be focusing their efforts at the moment.”

Lee Peacock: Police detain suspect after murder of two people in Westminster - Sky News

Police have found a man wanted in connection with two murders in Westminster after nearly a week-long search.

Officers are "confident" they discovered Lee Peacock, 49, on a canal barge near Ferrymead Avenue in Ealing, west London, just before 6pm on Wednesday. He had sustained serious injuries thought to be self-inflicted.

London Ambulance Service paramedics and the London Air Ambulance were called to the scene and the man was taken to hospital where his condition is believed to be life-threatening.

The Met's Directorate of Professional Standards was informed and the Independent Office for Police Conduct have indicated they will be conducting an independent investigation of the incident, the force added.

Sharon Pickles, 45, and Clinton Ashmore, 59, were discovered fatally stabbed at separate locations last Thursday and early on Friday with police treating the deaths as linked.

Emergency services were called to Ashbridge Street in Westminster just after 9.30pm on Thursday after concerns were raised for the wellbeing of people inside the property.

A 45-year-old woman, later identified as Ms Pickles, was found with a knife injury and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

At 2.15am on Friday, police were then alerted to reports of a man with a knife injury at a property in Jerome Crescent, about half a mile away.

Paramedics confirmed a 59-year-old man, later confirmed to be Mr Ashmore, had died.

On Tuesday, police issued CCTV images of Peacock who they wanted to speak to in connection with the two murders.

Peacock was seen at North Wembley station on the evening of 19 August - hours before Ms Pickles and Mr Ashmore were killed.

The Met Police said detectives believe the 49-year-old suspect knew both the victims.

The force also offered a £20,000 reward to anyone who provides any information leading to the conviction of the person responsible for the murders.

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley, from the Met's Specialist Crime Command, said on Tuesday his thoughts were with the families of the victims.

"This is a shocking crime and we will not rest until we bring the person or persons responsible to justice," he said.

Asked if Mr Peacock was being treated as dangerous, a Met Police spokesman said the murders were not being treated as random.

COVID-19: UK records 35,847 new cases and 149 more deaths, daily figures show - Sky News

The UK has recorded 35,847 new COVID cases and 149 more coronavirus-related deaths in the latest 24-hour period, government data shows.

The figures compare with 30,838 infections and 174 fatalities recorded yesterday - the highest daily death total since 12 March.

This time last week, 18 August, 33,904 cases and 111 deaths were announced.

Live COVID updates from across the UK and around the world

Since the pandemic began, 132,003 people in the UK have died within 28 days of testing positive for COVID-19 and there have been 6,590,747 lab-confirmed cases.

According to the latest data, 859 COVID patients were admitted to hospital on 21 August and there were 6,172 admissions in the last seven days, a rise of 9.4% on the previous week.

On Tuesday, 55,410 people were given their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, taking the total to 47,792,552 - equivalent to 87.9% of the UK's adult population.

More on Covid-19

Also, 130,676 people were given their second dose, which means 42,072,712 (77.4% of adults) are now fully inoculated.

It comes as new research has found protection from two doses of the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines begins to wane within six months.

In a reasonable "worst-case scenario", protection could fall to below 50% for the elderly and healthcare workers by winter, analysis from the Zoe COVID study found.

'Booster jabs needed to avoid more COVID deaths'

Professor Tim Spector, the lead scientist on the app, told Sky News that protection from vaccines is falling by around 3% per month.

Speaking about plans for a booster campaign, Mr Spector says this will have to be done with "precision" to avoid wasting vaccines as having COVID is like having a booster, in terms of impact on immunity.

He said booster jabs should be prioritised over vaccinating children if the UK wants to reduce deaths and hospitalisations.

Meanwhile, more than 1,000 people who attended Latitude Festival last month have tested positive for the virus.

The festival, which ran from 22 to 25 July, was part of the government's Events Research Programme and was attended by about 40,000 people.

Festivalgoers had to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test or be double vaccinated to access the site at Henham Park in Suffolk.

However, data released by Suffolk County Council reportedly shows 1,051 people tested positive for the virus in the days after the event.

It follows the news yesterday that health officials are investigating 4,700 cases of COVID which are suspected to be linked to the Boardmasters music and surf festival, which took place nearly two weeks ago in Cornwall.

September is expected to be a key month for the UK on COVID, with the biggest unknown being how much cases and hospitalisations will rise once pupils return to school and people come back from holidays.

Follow the Daily podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Spreaker.

The exact size of this rise is uncertain, with one expert saying that how many people end up in hospital is the "biggest unknown".

Dr Mike Tildesley, a member of the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling (Spi-M) which advises the government, said: "Probably what we will see is maybe in the middle of September we might see cases picking up a little bit and it may take a week or two or more for that to spill over into a rise in hospital admissions."

Circuit break lockdown in Scotland 'being considered' to tackle surging Covid cases - Daily Record

A circuit breaker lockdown is among the options being considered to slow the recent spike of coronavirus infections in Scotland, it has been reported.

Public health experts are reportedly lining up a series of options for Nicola Sturgeon after Scotland recorded its highest number of new daily cases today.

Other measures being considered include new rules on social distancing and so-called vaccine certificates.

It is believed that the most recent lifting of restrictions will be the first to be considered for reversal by Scottish Government ministers.

A number of options are reportedly being tabled to Nicola Sturgeon by public health experts - including a new lockdown

A source, who has knowledge of government planning, told The Times : “There are two options: You could either put in a circuit breaker, you could shut down completely for a short period.

“Or you could move back through the stages and say we are going to limit indoor gatherings, we are going to re-introduce distancing.”

Scotland moved beyond the coronavirus levels system earlier this month - which paved the way for the reopening of nightclubs while legal social distancing measures were scrapped.

Since then, there has been a sharp increase in the number of new Covid infections.

The latest daily statistics released by the Scottish Government revealed that 5,021 new daily cases were recorded in the last 24 hours.

But the number of hospitalisations and deaths from the virus remains much lower than those seen during the recent winter peak.

Almost two thousands Scots were being treated for Covid when the country entered into its third week of strict lockdown measures towards the end of January.

Today’s public health data reveals that there are currently 391 people in hospital with the virus.

Nicola Sturgeon is keen to avoid a new lockdown - but has not ruled out the possibility of new measures

Nicola Sturgeon said that she does not want to go back into lockdown despite the recent surge in cases.

But the First Minister stopped short of ruling out new restrictions in an address to Scots yesterday.

Sturgeon told PA new agency today: “I don’t want to go back to anything like a full lockdown.

“I don’t want to pre-empt any decision that might or might not - and I hope will not - have to be taken about the imposition of the restrictions.

“But if we, all of us, take the basic precautions right now that we know can slow the virus, then I hope no re-imposition of restrictions will be necessary.

“But I also know that no sensible First Minister, in the face of an infectious virus, would rule anything out, because protecting the population has to be the priority.”

The Scottish Government has been approached for comment.
