Two ambulance paramedics stabbed in Wolverhampton - BBC News

Two paramedics have been stabbed while attending a call to check on the welfare of a man.

The victims, a man and a woman, were described as stable in hospital with serious injuries after being hurt at a property in Stephens Close, Wolverhampton.

The crew used their emergency alert shortly after arriving at the scene.

A man who was Tasered by police was also treated for injuries. Officers said a man aged 52 has been arrested.

He has been held on suspicion of wounding.

The paramedics were conducting "a safe and well check" at about 12:30 BST when they were attacked.

A police officer who had accompanied the crew arrested a man at the scene, the West Midlands force said.

The ambulance staff sustained one stab wound each, one in the chest and one to the side.

Assistant Chief Ambulance Officer Nathan Hudson said: "Thankfully, our colleagues at [West Midlands Police] saved them from more serious injury."

He said the victims were in hospital and "not considered to be life-threatening at this time".

Neighbour Anita Millard, 65, said a man lived alone at the property, and it had been his elderly mother who had first raised concerns for his welfare after he failed to answer the door.

She described how two paramedics arrived, along with two police officers, before they managed to gain entry by removing a door panel with a screwdriver borrowed from a neighbour.

She said: "The police asked the man's mother to step back and then the girl paramedic went in, followed by the other medic.

"Then all I heard was a blood-curdling scream. He had two knives.

"The male paramedic then came backwards out the house and he shouted into his radio 'help, help, we've both been stabbed'.

"Then he pushed the female paramedic backwards towards the side gate, and away from it all.

"The guy was stood in the porch holding these knives. Then the police came in and shouted 'Taser' and they Tasered him."

Three additional ambulances, two Midlands Air ambulances and the West Midlands Care Team responded to the stabbing, along with three paramedic officers.

The victims were treated at the scene in the Ashmore Park area of the city before being taken to hospital.

Supt Simon Inglis, from Wolverhampton police, said: "This is a shocking incident resulting in serious injuries to two of our blue light colleagues.

"We are treating it as an isolated incident and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack."

The force said its thoughts were with the paramedic officers and their families.

Speaking on Twitter, an acting operations manager for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "This has made me feel sick... No one should come to work and suffer such harm. Especially when they've come to help people."

Police taser man after two paramedics stabbed in West Midlands - Daily Mail

Neighbours describe hearing 'blood-curdling screams' as attacker 'with two knives' stabbed two paramedics in the chest on house call – as man is Tasered and arrested

  • Emergency workers called to Ashmore area of Wolverhampton at 12.15pm
  • Paramedics sent out an emergency alert that they had been stabbed in the house
  • Police officers were called to the scene and shot the man with a stun gun
  • Anita Millard, 65, heard screams and stabbed paramedics collapsed out of house

Two paramedics have been stabbed in the chest today after a call-out to a home in the West Midlands where the alleged knifeman was seen carrying two blades before being Tasered by police.

The ambulance crew were called to reports of concern for a man's safety in the Ashmore area of Wolverhampton at around 12.15pm this afternoon.

Neighbours said around a dozen emergency vehicles were at the scene and the suspect was Tasered with an electric stun gun by police after a male paramedic staggered out of the house yelling: 'Help, help, we've both been stabbed' while dragging his female colleague to safety.

Both paramedics were stabbed in the chest by the knifeman who pounced as they entered the property, police later revealed.

Anita Millard, 65, who lives next door, said a man lived alone at the property, and it had been his elderly mother who had first raised concerns for his welfare after he failed to answer the door.

She described how two paramedics arrived, along with two police officers, before they managed to gain entry by removing a door panel with a screwdriver borrowed from a neighbour.

She said: 'The police asked the man's mother to step back and then the girl paramedic went in, followed by the other medic. Then all I heard was a blood-curdling scream. He had two knives - I've never seen anything like it'.

Mrs Millard, who has lived in the close for five years, added: 'The male paramedic then came backwards out the house and he shouted into his radio 'help, help, we've both been stabbed'.

'Then he pushed the female paramedic backwards towards the side gate, and away from it all.

'The guy was stood in the porch holding these knives.

'Then the police came in and shouted 'Taser' and then they tasered him.

'It was like something off the TV.'

Colleagues of the paramedics have also spoken of the 'harrowing' scene that greeted them as pictures emerged of a blonde female paramedic being stretchered away.

Assistant Chief Ambulance Officer Nathan Hudson said: 'We had a call at about midday from a woman concerned for a member of their family.

'We arrived at the scene within five minutes. Together with police we had to gain access to the property.

'As they were entering two staff members were stabbed in the chest with a knife.

'Police officers were soon able to detain the individual.

'The two paramedics, a female and male, are stable in hospital and their injuries are not life-threatening.

'Nobody comes to work to be stabbed. Only yesterday we were celebrating 52 years of the NHS. It is quite shocking really.

'They were conscious throughout and speaking when I went to see them in hospital.

'Health care workers put themselves on the line every day, but this is not what you expect when you get up for work in the morning.

'It was a harrowing scene and a harrowing place to be.

'There can be nothing worse than going to help people you know who've been seriously hurt. Throughout, they acted impeccably.

'I want to say a big thank you to everyone who attended the scene, in what was a very traumatic incident for everyone concerned.'

Speaking at a press conference at the scene, Superintendent Simon Inglis added: 'We received a call at about 12 o'clock today from a concerned mother about her son that he was going to harm himself.

'Ambulance crews attended with ourselves.

'Medics entered into the property and unfortunately the man came out and attacked them with a knife.

'Officers then engaged. He was tasered, detained and is currently in custody.

'No other persons were injured and there was no wider threat to the community.'

Another resident, who did not want to be named, added: 'The ambulance came first and we thought nothing of it.

'The paramedics were seen trying to get into the property and were confronted by a man with a knife.

'They used the emergency code and all of sudden police, ambulances, two rapid response vehicles turned up.

'Over the next 10 to 15 mins two air ambulances landed on the shopping parade and teams rushed round to Stephens Close.

'I saw a male paramedic rushed out the property and into an ambulance.

'Five minutes later a female paramedic was wheeled into another ambulance.

'I know of the guy in the house but don't know him personally. He rides his bike to and from work.

'He doesn't normally acknowledge anyone else in the street passing him. It's normally a very quiet street and area.'

A spokesman for West Midlands Police had earlier said: 'A man has been arrested after two paramedics were stabbed at a property in Stephens Close, Wolverhampton today.'

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: 'Two members of ambulance service staff have been stabbed after attending a call out to check on the welfare of a man in Wolverhampton.

'The initial call came through at around 12.15pm this lunchtime to an address in Stephens Close.

'Shortly after arrival, the crew used their emergency alert to say that they had been stabbed.

'Three additional ambulances, two Midlands Air Ambulances and the West Midlands Care Team attended the scene along with three paramedic officers.

'The two members of staff, both paramedics, have been treated at the scene by doctors and paramedics and have been taken to hospital for further treatment.

'A man who was Tasered by police officers at the scene has also been treated by ambulance staff.

'More details will be released later.'

Wolverhampton: Man arrested after two paramedics stabbed in chest at house - Sky News

A man has been arrested after two paramedics were stabbed in the chest during a callout to a home in Wolverhampton.

The paramedics, a man and a woman, were attacked at about 12.30pm on Monday after being called to check on the welfare of a man at a property in Stephens Close, West Midlands Police said.

They were both stabbed in the chest and were taken to hospital, but are now in a stable condition "without serious life-threatening injuries".

Two police officers who were with the paramedics tasered the occupant of the house, a 52-year-old man, and arrested him on suspicion of wounding before taking him to a police station - where he remains.

Anita Millard, who lives next door, said a man lived alone at the property and his elderly mother had raised concerns for his welfare after he failed to answer the door.

The 65-year-old said two paramedics arrived with two police officers and they managed to gain entry by borrowing a screwdriver from a neighbour and using it to remove a door panel.

She said: "The police asked the man's mother to step back and then the girl paramedic went in, followed by the other medic. Then all I heard was a blood-curdling scream.

Nathan Hudson, a West Midlands Ambulance Service assistant chief ambulance officer, said they were called at about midday over "concerns for welfare from the family of a patient" they had not heard from.

The two paramedics arrived at the house within five minutes of the call and - with police assistance - they managed to gain entry.

"When we gained entry, two of my staff members were assaulted and stabbed in the chest area," he said.

Further paramedics arrived quickly and treated their two colleagues, he said.

"Thanks to my staff, the officers that attended and also the police which, without their help, I would probably have been telling a very different story today," he added.

"They (the paramedics) are well, they are in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Birmingham), and they are doing well at this moment in time. They are stable, without serious life-threatening injuries."

West Midlands Police Superintendent Simon Inglis added that his officers "immediately engaged" with the man after the paramedics were stabbed and he is currently "assisting with our enquiries".

He added: "It is too early to say in detail, but it is believed that the gentleman may have been suffering a mental health crisis at this time.

"There was no wider motive for the attack on the paramedics and nobody else in the community should feel any fear."

Stamp duty holiday announcement: When is Rishi Sunak’s speech and what will the chancellor say? - The Sun

BRITS could be set for a six-month stamp duty holiday as the government aims to kick-start the economy after the coronavirus pandemic.

The measure is one of those being discussed by the Treasury and could be revealed by chancellor Rishi Sunak in a bid to stimulate the housing market.

When is Rishi Sunak's stamp duty announcement?

A "stamp duty holiday" is understood to be a policy being considered by Mr Sunak for his Autumn Budget in October.

But he could unveil the plan as part of his economic update, which will be delivered in the House of Commons on Wednesday afternoon (July 8).

It is expected that the chancellor will raise the tax-free property threshold as high as £500,000, meaning most homebuyers won't have to pay any stamp duty.

The Sun revealed on Saturday that ministers were considering a six-month stamp duty holiday to revive the housing market.

The new move would mirror the popular measure introduced by ex-chancellor Philip Hammond in 2017 when he removed stamp duty up to £30,000 for first-time buyers buying properties worth up to £500,000.

The following year he announced that first-time shared ownership buyers can claim relief if their house was bought after November 22, 2017 for no more than £500,000.

What is stamp duty?

Stamp duty land tax (SDLT) is a lump sum payment anyone buying a property or land over a certain price has to pay.

All house buyers in England and Northern Ireland must pay stamp duty on properties over £125,000 - although there are some exceptions.

For example, first-time buyers in England or Northern Ireland pay no stamp duty on properties worth up to £300,000.

The rate a buyer has to fork out varies depending on the price and type of property.

Rates are different depending on whether it is residential, a second home or buy-to-let.

Currently, homebuyers pay 2 per cent of the value of the home between £125,001 and £250,000, and 5 per cent on the next £675,000.

It comes as new figures show a sharp drop in house prices for the second month running in June, with the average value of a home down by 1.4 per cent, according to lender Nationwide.

What is Rishi Sunak expected to announce?

The chancellor is expected to introduce a range of policies in his mini Budget this week, as the Treasury seeks to restart the economy after months of coronavirus lockdown.

Another possible measure being considered is removing stamp duty land tax (SDLT) on vacant land.

The move is designed to take advantage of disused land to boost the development of new house-building projects.

Other measures being discussed include a cut on VAT for pubs and restaurants to help protect jobs in the hard-hit hospitality industry.

Plans are also being discussed for new apprenticeship schemes, whereby companies could be given £1,000 to take on trainees.

The Treasury is also expected to invest £100million in traineeships for young people.

And about 270,000 more young people will benefit from jobs advice through a £32million investment in the National Careers Service.

The government has also announced a £1.6billion package for the arts industry, which will help to save theatres and live music venues which remain closed to curb the spread of the virus.

Restaurants, pubs and cafes reopened on July 4 as part of "Super Saturday".

But there are fears that, without drastic intervention, many jobs could be lost in the coming months with the chancellor aiming to stop young people bearing the brunt of lockdown.
