Humza Yousaf: Future of Scotland's first minister hangs in the balance as Greens back no confidence motion - Sky News

The Scottish Green Party will join with rival MSPs to back a no confidence motion in First Minister Humza Yousaf next week, after the SNP kicked its coalition partners out of government.

Mr Yousaf announced his plan to cut ties with the Greens earlier on Thursday, following a bitter row over the SNP's climbdown on climate targets.

And soon after, the Scottish Conservatives announced it would lodge a vote of no confidence in him, claiming the first minister had "failed" in his role and had "focused on the wrong priorities for Scotland".

Both Labour and the Liberal Democrats agreed to back the motion, with its success hanging on whether Green Party MSPs joined the attack to give SNP critics a majority in Holyrood.

But its co-leaders, Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater, have now confirmed their party they will join forces to condemn Mr Yousaf's leadership, with Green sources telling Sky News there was serious anger among the ousted party.

If the vote passes, it will still be up to Mr Yousaf to decide on how to respond. However, it puts increasing pressure on his position if he fails to hold the confidence of the majority of the parliament.

More on Humza Yousaf

However, if a no confidence vote was passed on the government, the SNP government would have to resign and appoint a new first minister within 28 days or call an election.

Speaking at a press conference, Mr Harvie said: "Humza Yousaf becoming first minister was on the basis of a political cooperation which both parties members signed in good faith, which Humza Yousaf endorsed, and even two days ago was still endorsing.

"He's now chosen to end that. That's his decision and it can't come without consequences."

Both he and Ms Slater denied supporting the no confidence vote was "revenge", but said the first minister's decision "can't come without consequences".

Mr Harvie added: "This is about how we achieve the greatest political change for Scotland.

"Humza Yousef has decided to abandon the vehicle that was delivering that progressive change for Scotland. We think that's a profound mistake."

The power-sharing deal between the SNP and the Greens was made in 2021, after Nicola Sturgeon's party came in just shy of an outright majority in the Holyrood election of the same year.

Both backers of Scottish independence, the deal between the parties - named after the first minister's official residence in Edinburgh - brought the Greens into government for the first time anywhere in the UK, with both Ms Slater and Mr Harvie given ministerial posts.

But signs the agreement was running into difficulty came after the Scottish government scrapped its commitment to cut emissions by 75% by 2030.

The Greens were also dismayed at the pause of puberty blockers in the wake of the landmark Cass review of gender services for under-18s in England and Wales.

The party had been expected to hold a vote on the future of the agreement, but before they got a chance, Mr Yousaf summoned his cabinet and announced on Thursday that the deal had "served its purpose".

The first minister said he hoped to pursue a "less formal" agreement with his former partners and heralded what he called a "new beginning" for the SNP, saying his decision showed "leadership".

But with the Greens now ready to join those against the SNP, there is a possibility it could instead prompt an end to his premiership.

SNP and Scottish Greens power-sharing deal ends following climate target row - Sky News

The SNP has terminated its power-sharing deal with the Scottish Greens following a bitter row over its climbdown on climate targets.

It comes after First Minister Humza Yousaf summoned a meeting of his Cabinet - usually held on a Tuesday - this morning following speculation over the future of the Holyrood deal, first struck by his predecessor Nicola Sturgeon.

The deal, signed in 2021, was designed to facilitate governing between the two pro-independence parties in Holyrood.

But signs it was running into difficult came after the Scottish government scrapped its commitment to cut emissions by 75% by 2030.

The climate announcement also came on the same day that the prescription of puberty blockers for new patients under the age of 18 at a Glasgow gender identity service would be paused.

It means Mr Yousaf's administration will now run a minority government at Holyrood.

Politics latest updates - Greens and SNP to hold news conferences

More on Snp

Lorna Slater, the co-leader of the Scottish Greens, accused the SNP of an "act of political cowardice" and of "selling out future generations to appease the most reactionary forces in the country".

"They have broken the bonds of trust with members of both parties who have twice chosen the co-operation agreement and climate action over chaos, culture wars and division," she said. "They have betrayed the electorate.

"And by ending the agreement in such a weak and thoroughly hopeless way, Humza Yousaf has signalled that when it comes to political cooperation, he can no longer be trusted."

It is understood the first minister will hold a press conference this morning in the wake of the announcement. The Greens are also expected to talk to the media.

The power-sharing deal with the Greens, also known as the Bute House agreement, brought the party into government for the first time anywhere in the UK.

Named after the first minister's official residence in Edinburgh, it gave the SNP a majority in the Scottish parliament when its votes there were combined with those of the seven Green MSPs.

It created ministerial posts for the Scottish Green Party's co-leaders Ms Slater and Patrick Harvie.

As well as the watering down of climate targets, the Greens were also dismayed at the pause of puberty blockers in the wake of the landmark Cass review into the landmark Cass review of gender services for under-18s in England and Wales.

Last week the Greens said it would hold a vote on the future of the Bute House Agreement and Mr Harvie urged members to back it so the party could "put Green values into practice" in government.

But in the statement released today, Ms Slater said Green members were now not going to have a "democratic say" on the agreement, adding: "The most reactionary and backwards-looking forces within the first minister's party have forced him to do the opposite of what he himself had said was in Scotland's best interests."

"If they can't stand up to members of their own party, how can anyone expect them to stand up to the UK government at Westminster and defend the interests of Scotland?"

Teenage girl remains in custody after teachers and pupils stabbed at Welsh school - The Independent

Wales school stabbing: Victims’ injuries ‘not life threatening’, police say

A teenage girl has been arrested and remains in custody on suspicion of attempted murder after two teachers and a teenage pupil were stabbed at a school in Wales, police said.

Three people were injured in the attack at Amman Valley School in Carmarthenshire, at around 11.15am on Wednesday.

Two air ambulances were sent to the school, also known as Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, and worried parents rushed to the scene.

One air ambulance then headed to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where the three wounded were treated, Dyfed-Powys Police said.

Parents waited for several hours at the gates of the school, which was “in lockdown”, before tearfully being reunited with their children as the school day ended.

Superintendent Ross Evans said: “Three people - two teachers and a teenage pupil - have been taken to hospital with stab wounds. The family members of all those injured have been informed.

“A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and currently remains in police custody.”

Headteacher praises ‘calm and mature response’ of pupils and staff

In a statement on the school website, headteacher James Durbridge praised staff and pupils for their “calm and mature response” to the lockdown.

“Today has been a very difficult day for us as all as in the school. It goes without saying that my thoughts are with the three individuals and their families, who have been affected by today’s incident.

“In the immediate aftermath of the incident, our priority was to ensure the security of pupils and staff whilst managing the situation and communicating with those directly impacted. Working with the police we issued communication as soon as feasibly possible.

“To support Dyfed Powys Police, the school will be closed tomorrow to all pupils and staff in order for officers to further carry out their investigations.

“Although the school will be closed, I want to reassure pupils, parents and staff that wellbeing support is available to anyone who has been affected.”

He added: “On a final note, I wish to commend all staff and pupils for their calm and mature response during today’s lockdown. We are proud to have witnessed pupils embodying the school’s core values while supporting their peers and staff.”

Local councillor expresses disbelief at triple stabbing in Carmarthenshire

Councillor Ann Davies, who represents the Llanddarog area in Ammanford, has been speaking to BBC Radio Wales outside the school this morning.

She said: “This is so unexpected within Carmarthenshire, and within the whole of Wales. As a local authority we have spent hundreds of thousands of pounds creating fencing around each one of our schools in order to keep our pupils safe. Not thinking, perhaps, that the problem would be from within inside that fencing.

“We would assume that any dangers come from the outside but, of course, this tragic incident happened inside the school itself. This is just one incident. We never thought this would happen in Carmarthenshire.”

Ammanford school stabbing live updates as teachers and pupil hurt and girl arrested - Wales Online

A girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a pupil and two teachers were injured in a stabbing at a secondary school. Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Ammanford was put into lockdown with emergency services at the scene earlier today.

Dyfed-Powys Police said two teachers and a pupil were taken to hospital with stab wounds. A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and currently remains in police custody.

Multiple people with children and family members in Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Ammanford said they were told to stay in classrooms, with students reportedly asked not to use their phones. Superintendent Ross Evans, Carmarthenshire commander, added: "I would like to reassure parents and the public that the incident has concluded, and pupils have now left the school.

"We are working with the school and other agencies to ensure appropriate support is available to all involved. This was a very distressing incident and our thoughts are with the victims, their family and everyone impacted by what has happened."

An air tracking service has confirmed there were two air ambulances at the scene, one from Dafen, Llanelli, and one from Welshpool. Ysgol Dyffryn Aman on Margaret Street in the town is a bilingual comprehensive school and sixth form with around 2,000 pupils who come from a large surrounding area.

Emergency services remain at the scene and the school has been closed while investigations continue. In an earlier statement, Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Dyfed-Powys Police is dealing with an incident at Amman Valley School.

“Three people have been injured and are receiving treatment. One person has been arrested and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident. Emergency services remain at scene and the school has been closed while investigations continue.

“We are working closely with the school and Carmarthenshire County Council. We are aware that there is footage of the incident currently circulating on social media. We would ask that this is removed to avoid contempt of court and distress to those affected. We would ask the people do not speculate while there is a police investigation ongoing”.

The Welsh Ambulance Service (WAS) also issued a statement and said they were called to the scene at around 11.15am. They confirmed that they sent four emergency ambulances and a hazardous area response team. They were joined by two Cymru high acuity response unit paramedics and an operational manager.

They also confirmed that advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service in two Wales Air Ambulance charity helicopters.

A spokesperson for Wales Air Ambulance service later confirmed that three critical care teams were deployed to the incident. The spokesperson said: "I can confirm that the Wales Air Ambulance attended an incident in that region today.

"We mobilised three critical care teams at 11:30. Our Dafen and Welshpool based crew were mobilised by air and our Cardiff based crew was mobilised by road. Unfortunately, we cannot comment any further."

Cllr Karen Davies, an LEA governor at the school, confirmed she had been told the incident involved a stabbing with two members of staff injured. She said she did not know whether any children had been injured.

"I have been told someone has been arrested and that two members of staff have been stabbed, but have no confirmation on how serious the injuries are," she said. "I send my thoughts to those injured and all the people there. I know how well the school rehearsed lockdown and I am sure everything is under control.

"It is shocking. You hear about these things happening in Manchester and London but it is literally our comprehensive here."

Cllr Davies said she was in touch with the council and her thoughts were with those injured and at the school. Describing the incident as shocking, she said she has been in contact with the council and that the school had strict emergency lockdown procedures in the event of emergencies.

At around 2.35pm, Carmarthenshire County Council issued a statement on their website. The council has said that family members of all injured persons have been informed.

They also said that they wanted to reassure parents and the public that the incident has been contained. In their statement they said: "Dyfed-Powys Police is dealing with an incident at Amman Valley School.

"Three people have been injured and are receiving treatment. One person has been arrested and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident. Emergency services remain at scene and the school has been closed while investigations continue."

They then added: "We are aware that there is footage of the incident currently circulating on social media. We would ask that this is removed to avoid contempt of court and distress to those affected.

"We would ask the people do not speculate while there is a police investigation ongoing. The family members of all injured persons have been informed. We would like to reassure parents and the public that the incident has been contained."
