As Britain this week recorded the highest death rate in Europe – and the second in the world behind the US – an incredulous foreign press described the situation using colourful invective: it is “a shambles”, “a nightmare” reflecting “negligence”, “complacency” and “stupidity”.

Left-wing daily Libération’s London correspondent Sonia Delesalle-Stolper noted it was one of the “cruel coincidences” that news of Britain’s tragic record was drowned out by the scandal of Prof Ferguson’s departure. “A crucial piece of news blocked out by juicy details of a banal adultery.” Conservative newspaper Le Figaro said the numbers of fatalities were “cruel statistics that will add to the pressure on Boris Johnson.”

Britain has become Europe’s “problem child” during this crisis, the DPA news agency’s London correspondent Christoph Meyer wrote, noting the hubris weeks ago of “politicians who were already slapping each other on their backs and praising the health system, which was better prepared for the pandemic than any other country in the world.”

Spain

An editorial in left-leaning El País described the British response as “incomprehensible”, noting that Mr Johnson “turned a deaf ear to the severity of the crisis for several weeks, to the point that he declined to attend five emergency committee meetings and instead enjoyed 12 joyful days of vacation”.

Greece

Left-wing daily Ethnos described the Prime Minister as “more dangerous than coronavirus,” and warned of the perils that “incompetent leaders” such as Mr Johnson were “at the helm at a time of such emergency”.

The Sydney Morning Herald, Australia’s oldest newspaper, ran a feature headlined “Biggest failure in a generation: Where did Britain go wrong?” that described the UK response as a “series of deadly mistakes and miscalculations”.
