Politics latest news: Vaughan Gething forced to quit after four ministers resign - The Telegraph

Vaughan Gething has announced he will resign as the First Minister of Wales.

He said he will “begin the process of stepping down as leader of the Welsh Labour Party and, as a result, First Minister” after a handful of his top team quit and effectively forced his hand.

Four Labour ministers resigned from the Welsh Government at the same time this morning and called for Mr Gething to go.

The First Minister had become mired in scandals over the last few months, including over donations to his campaign and the sacking of a minister over leaked texts to the media.

The Welsh Conservatives said Mr Gething’s decision to quit was “long overdue”.

An autopsy of the body thought to be that of Jay Slater is set to take place, with police believing the teenager suffered a fall in Tenerife.

Human remains were found in the search for the British 19-year-old on Monday, nearly a month after he went missing while on holiday on the Spanish island.

A body was found in the area where the apprentice bricklayer had disappeared near the village of Masca, the Civil Guard said, as a charity supporting the family confirmed that it was discovered close to the site of his mobile phone’s last location in the Rural de Teno National Park.

DNA tests will be carried out to establish the person’s identity, along with an autopsy, which a police spokesman told Manchester Evening News would “probably” take place on Tuesday morning. The body was found with Mr Slater’s possessions and clothes, charity LBT Global said, with initial police investigations suggesting he “could have suffered an accident fall”.

Mr Slater, from Lancashire, had been at the NRG music festival on 16 June before he travelled to an Airbnb in the village of Masca with two men. He appeared to start an 11-hour walk back to his apartment the following morning and was last seen by a cafe owner.

Tenerife officials ‘say identification of body will likely not happen until next week'

Tenerife officials have reportedly now said full identification of the body recovered in the search for Jay Slater will likely not happen until next week.

However, the officials on the Spanish island said the documentation found on the body did belong to the teenager, according to the Express.

In the first comments from the investigating court since the discovery, an official representing the judge said: “There is very little doubt about both the identity and the aetiology. The documentation he was carrying corresponds to that of Jay Slater and everything is pointing to an accidental fall, although that is unofficial pending the final reports.”

The official from the court in the town of Icod de los Vinos – which covers the area of Masca, where the body was found – added: “The court is saying the official identification will not be known until next week.”

The Spanish Civil Guard said initial investigations suggest the teenager “could have suffered an accident fall” in the steep and inaccessible area where the remains were found.

The force said an autopsy will be performed on the body “to confirm that the death was accidental”.

Jay Slater’s family are ‘absolutely broken’ and believe he died instantly after falling from height

Jay Slater’s “devastated” family are “absolutely broken” after the discovery of a body in the search for the missing teenager.

They believe the 19-year-old likely died instantly after falling from a height in a remote area, and are therefore no longer critical of the search for him.

A family spokesman told MailOnline on Tuesday: “The whole family is absolutely broken. They are devastated. It's not the outcome they were hoping for.

“Initially, they thought, how could he be so close and yet be missed? But now having seen the location, they appreciate the remoteness of it and there is no criticism of the search.

“It looks as if he fell from a height, so he would most likely have been killed instantly and he wasn't there for a long time.

“There will be a PM [post-mortem] in Tenerife and probably one in the UK, and repatriation should be within a week or so, it's all time-dependent.”

Civil Guard continued search discreetly

Tenerife’s civil guard said it had found a body in the search for Jay Slater, despite having publicly called off the search over two weeks ago.

After 13 days of searching, the Spanish authorities called off the search on June 30, but said they were continuing their investigation.

However upon recovering a body Monday, they revealed they had indeed continued an “incessant and discreet” search in which the “natural space was preserved so that it would not be filled with curious onlookers”.

Jay Slater’s mother criticises ‘vile’ conspiracy theories

In her final statement prior to a body being found in the search for her son, Jay Slater’s mother Debbie Duncan criticised the “awful comments and conspiracy theories” on social media.

Ms Duncan wrote: “As we approach four weeks of our beautiful Jay’s disappearance, we cannot put into words the heartache we are suffering as a family.

“Jay is a typical young man who loves life with a bright future ahead of him. This month will mark the end of his three year apprenticeship with the world at his feet. He is loved by everyone and has a close bond with his family and many many friends

“We would also like to say that we are aware of the awful comments and conspiracy theories that are filling social media. These theories are hindering the people trying to help us in their investigations here in Tenerife and are vile to see as a family.

“He is a loving son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend to so many. He is such a popular boy this and is very distressing for us all to read.”

Politics latest news: Four Welsh Labour ministers quit and urge Vaughan Gething to resign - The Telegraph

Four Labour ministers have resigned from the Welsh Government as they called for Vaughan Gething to quit as First Minister.

Mick Antoniw, Julie James, Lesley Griffiths and Jeremy Miles all published resignation letters to Mr Gething this morning.

It comes after the First Minister has become mired in scandals over the last few months, including over donations to his campaign and the sacking of a minister over leaked texts to the media.

Mr Antoniw, the Counsel General, said: “I must advise you that I do not believe you can continue as First Minister. Wales needs confident and stable government. I do not believe you are capable of delivering that.”

Ms James, the Cabinet Secretary for Housing, wrote: “We must begin to repair this damage immediately and I am extremely sorry to tell you that I do not think you are capable of being the leader who can lead us through that”.

Jay Slater: Rescue workers searching for missing teen find human remains - Sky News

Rescue workers searching for missing British teenager Jay Slater in Tenerife have found a body and are trying to identify it, Spanish police have told Sky News.

"Evidence strongly suggests" the remains are those of the 19-year-old, officers added.

The body "does look to be that of Jay Slater" said LBT Global, a British overseas missing persons charity which has been working with the Slater family.

It added in a statement: "It is understood the body was found close to the site of [Jay Slater's] mobile phone's last location.

"Although formal identification is yet to be carried out, the body was found with Mr Slater's possessions and clothes.

"A post mortem and forensic enquiries will follow."

Police said in a statement that the Civil Guard's mountain rescue group had located the "lifeless body of a young man in the Masca area after 29 days of constant search".

They added: "Given the complexity of the case, the discovery has been possible thanks to the incessant and discreet search carried out by the Civil Guard during these 29 days."

Parts of the countryside were "preserved" so they were "not filled with curious onlookers".

Officers went on: "All indications indicate that it could be the young British man who has been missing since June 17 - in the absence of full identification.

"The first investigations reveal he could have suffered an accident fall in the inaccessible area where he was found.

"We are awaiting the results of the autopsy."

Jay Slater was last heard from near Masca, which is far further away from the festival

"Jay's family never gave up hope," said Sky News correspondent Shingi Mararike, who has reported from Tenerife.

He added: "They stayed in Tenerife throughout this month in which the search went on, and they themselves tried to chip in with the search effort.

"I spoke to his dad, Warren, on a number of occasions as he went to the area, as he tried to retrace Jay's steps, and he was devastated. He was extremely upset about what had happened.

"And what we have now is potentially the news that they really didn't want to hear."

Police commentator Graham Wettone said the geography of the area where Jay Slater went missing made the search much harder.

"Clearly the terrain is exceptionally difficult to navigate, but especially to search thoroughly and properly with the resources, the equipment, and tactics they were using," he said.

June: Jay Slater's dad speaks out

Mr Slater was last heard from after setting off to walk from a northern area of the island back to his holiday accommodation in the south - a journey of about 11 hours.

He flew out to the Spanish island with friends on 13 June to attend a music festival at Papagayo nightclub in the southern resort of Playa de las Americas three days later.

At 8.30am on 17 June he called his friend Lucy Law, telling her he had missed a bus, his phone battery was on 1%, and he had cut his leg on a cactus.

On Sunday his mother, Debbie Duncan, said the family "cannot put into words" the heartache they have been through.

She said her son was "loved by everyone and has a close bond with his family and many, many friends".

Ms Duncan described her boy as a "loving son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend to so many".

She also said that certain comments online were "very distressing for us all to read".

Ms Duncan added: "We are aware of the awful comments and conspiracy theories that are filling social media.

"These theories are hindering the people trying to help us in their investigations here in Tenerife and are vile to see as a family."

Met Office issues rain weather warning for Nottinghamshire amid risk of 'localised flooding' - Nottinghamshire Live

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for rain in Nottinghamshire amid warnings of possible flooding and power cuts. The yellow warning covers the whole county and has been put in place between 3pm on Monday, July 15 and 9am on Tuesday.

Heavy rain could lead to a risk of localised flooding, the Met Office said. It added there is a slight chance of power cuts and a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.

"Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services," it said. "Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures."

Get the latest news straight to your phone by joining us on WhatsApp

The weather warning is in place across England and Wales. The Met Office advised people to check if their properties are at risk of flooding.

No flood alerts have currently been issued for Nottinghamshire.
