Jay Slater: Rescue workers searching for missing teen find human remains - Sky News

Rescue workers searching for missing British teenager Jay Slater in Tenerife have found a body and are trying to identify it, Spanish police have told Sky News.

"Evidence strongly suggests" the remains are those of the 19-year-old, officers added.

The body "does look to be that of Jay Slater" said LBT Global, a British overseas missing persons charity which has been working with the Slater family.

It added in a statement: "It is understood the body was found close to the site of [Jay Slater's] mobile phone's last location.

"Although formal identification is yet to be carried out, the body was found with Mr Slater's possessions and clothes.

"A post mortem and forensic enquiries will follow."

Police said in a statement that the Civil Guard's mountain rescue group had located the "lifeless body of a young man in the Masca area after 29 days of constant search".

They added: "Given the complexity of the case, the discovery has been possible thanks to the incessant and discreet search carried out by the Civil Guard during these 29 days."

Parts of the countryside were "preserved" so they were "not filled with curious onlookers".

Officers went on: "All indications indicate that it could be the young British man who has been missing since June 17 - in the absence of full identification.

"The first investigations reveal he could have suffered an accident fall in the inaccessible area where he was found.

"We are awaiting the results of the autopsy."

Jay Slater was last heard from near Masca, which is far further away from the festival

"Jay's family never gave up hope," said Sky News correspondent Shingi Mararike, who has reported from Tenerife.

He added: "They stayed in Tenerife throughout this month in which the search went on, and they themselves tried to chip in with the search effort.

"I spoke to his dad, Warren, on a number of occasions as he went to the area, as he tried to retrace Jay's steps, and he was devastated. He was extremely upset about what had happened.

"And what we have now is potentially the news that they really didn't want to hear."

Police commentator Graham Wettone said the geography of the area where Jay Slater went missing made the search much harder.

"Clearly the terrain is exceptionally difficult to navigate, but especially to search thoroughly and properly with the resources, the equipment, and tactics they were using," he said.

June: Jay Slater's dad speaks out

Mr Slater was last heard from after setting off to walk from a northern area of the island back to his holiday accommodation in the south - a journey of about 11 hours.

He flew out to the Spanish island with friends on 13 June to attend a music festival at Papagayo nightclub in the southern resort of Playa de las Americas three days later.

At 8.30am on 17 June he called his friend Lucy Law, telling her he had missed a bus, his phone battery was on 1%, and he had cut his leg on a cactus.

On Sunday his mother, Debbie Duncan, said the family "cannot put into words" the heartache they have been through.

She said her son was "loved by everyone and has a close bond with his family and many, many friends".

Ms Duncan described her boy as a "loving son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend to so many".

She also said that certain comments online were "very distressing for us all to read".

Ms Duncan added: "We are aware of the awful comments and conspiracy theories that are filling social media.

"These theories are hindering the people trying to help us in their investigations here in Tenerife and are vile to see as a family."

Met Office issues rain weather warning for Nottinghamshire amid risk of 'localised flooding' - Nottinghamshire Live

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for rain in Nottinghamshire amid warnings of possible flooding and power cuts. The yellow warning covers the whole county and has been put in place between 3pm on Monday, July 15 and 9am on Tuesday.

Heavy rain could lead to a risk of localised flooding, the Met Office said. It added there is a slight chance of power cuts and a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.

"Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services," it said. "Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures."

The weather warning is in place across England and Wales. The Met Office advised people to check if their properties are at risk of flooding.

No flood alerts have currently been issued for Nottinghamshire.

King Charles has privately written to former president Donald Trump in the wake of his assassination attempt, it has been revealed.

Buckingham Palace announced the news in a statement today following the dramatic events at a Pennsylvania rally this weekend.

The Monarch reportedly echoed the sentiments of the new Prime Minister Keir Starmer and condemned gun violence after the incident that claimed the life of a spectator and the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20.

Charles took the opportunity to wish a speedy recovery to all those injured in the incident, including the former president, and to express his condolences to those it left bereaved.

According to authorities, an additional two spectators were left critically injured.

The spectator who lost his life was later identified as Corey Comperatore, 50, a volunteer fire chief who died while shielding his family from the bullets.

The assassination attempt was similarly condemned by President Biden, who also privately reached out to his political rival after the incident.

In a statement released shortly after the attack on Saturday (13 July), he said there is “no place in America for this. We must unite as one nation to condemn it. It’s sick, it’s sick.”

World leaders have similarly expressed their solidarity with the former president and all those affected by the attempted assassination.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said: “I wish him a speedy recovery and my thoughts are with those affected. I condemn this attack. Political violence has no place in our democracies. NATO Allies stand together to defend our freedom & values.”

The former president took to his Truth social media platform to call for unity in the wake of the attack.

“We will FEAR NOT, but instead remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness,” Trump wrote on Sunday (14 July).

“In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win.

“It was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening.”

Questions are now being raised about how Crooks was able to make such a serious attempt on the former president’s life.

He was killed by law enforcement officers at the event after opening fire on Trump and the crowd from a nearby rooftop.

The FBI has not yet identified a motive for Crooks, who was a Republican.

Crooks has been described as an “outcast” by former classmates who revealed that he was relentlessly bullied for his appearance.

Northern Ireland's four best beaches according to The Sunday Times - Belfast Live

Northern Ireland's four best beaches according to The Sunday Times have been revealed.

The annual Times and Sunday Times best beaches guide is the definitive and most comprehensive list of the UK's 50 best beaches. The 2024 guide is the 16th edition, and only features beaches rated as "excellent" for water quality by the national government agencies.

The beach at Ballycastle in Co Antrim has been named as Northern Ireland's beach of the year by the award-winning chief travel writer at The Times and Sunday Times, Chris Haslam.

In his description of Ballycastle, Chris said: "Ballycastle feels like a made-up resort. There’s a river running across a beach of flat sands; the best chippy on the coast (Morton’s on the harbour); kayaking; guided wild swimming; boat trips to Rathlin Island just offshore; and a new high-speed passenger ferry service to Islay and Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula in Scotland, which is visible from the beach."

Chris Haslam has personally visited and inspected all 50 beaches included in the guide over the past eight weeks. The guide showcases the unrivalled beauty of the UK seaside, evaluated through a rigorous 11-point inspection checklist.

Criteria include water quality, cleanliness, accessibility, car-parking facilities, lifeguard presence, hygiene levels at restrooms and showers, and dog-friendliness. The guide only covers mainland beaches.

The four best beaches in Northern Ireland according to The Sunday Times:

  • NORTHERN IRELAND’S BEACH OF THE YEAR: Ballycastle, Co Antrim

  • White Park Bay, Co Antrim

  • Benone, Co Londonderry

  • Murlough, Co Down

Chris Haslam said: "My Jack Russell, Dave T Dog, and I have journeyed 5,583 miles and explored 543 beaches. The 50 beaches that made our list are graced with outstanding natural beauty, superb infrastructure, and a clear sense of pride from those who live, work, and play there.

"I’m still in awe of the beauty of the UK coast. From Kynance to Caithness, and Brancaster to Benone, the beaches of Great Britain and Northern Ireland are the most magnificent on earth.”

Man charged with double murder after human remains found in Bristol and London - as victims named - Sky News

A man has been charged with murder following the discovery of human remains in two suitcases in Bristol and a London flat - as the victims have been named.

Yostin Andres Mosquera, 34, of Scotts Road, west London, was arrested in Bristol in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He was charged in the early hours of Monday with two counts of murder and will appear in custody later today at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court.

The Metropolitan Police said it is not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the murders.

The two victims can now be named as 62-year-old Albert Alfonso and 71-year-old Paul Longworth.

Mr Longworth was British, and Mr Alfonso was originally from France but had obtained British citizenship.

They had previously been in a relationship and still lived together at the flat in Scotts Road.

Both victims were known to the man arrested and he had been staying with them at the Scotts Road flat for a short period of time, police said.

The bodies were discovered by officers after they received a report of a man acting suspiciously on Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol on Wednesday night.

Further remains were found at the London address on Friday.

The Met Police said the evidence gathered so far does not suggest there was a homophobic motive, but the case has been classified as a hate crime under national guidelines.

It said this would be reviewed as any further evidence of a specific motive becomes available.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine said his thoughts are with "Albert and Paul's loved ones who are coming to terms with this terrible news".

He said: "I know that this awful incident will cause concern not just among residents in Shepherds Bush but in the wider LGBTQ+ community across London.

"I hope it will be of some reassurance that whilst inquiries are still ongoing and the investigation is at a relatively early stage, we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the two murders."

He added: "Officers have worked with the pan-London LGBTQ+ Independent Advisory Group (IAG) since the identity of the two victims and their sexuality was established. Their advice, expertise and support for the investigation has been extremely valuable.

"We will continue to work with them, and with other partners including local IAGs, as the investigation and the policing response continues."

A weather warning has been issued for parts of England and Wales ahead of forecast "heavy rain".

The Met Office's yellow warning for rain is in force from 08:00 to 23:59 BST on Monday.

It covers Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Bristol and Wales, along with parts of the north west of England.

"Outbreaks of rain, some heavy and thundery, will spread steadily north across the area during Monday," the Met Office said.

"Some torrential downpours are likely in places with 15 to 20mm falling in less than an hour and as much as 30 to40 mm in three hours.
