Princess of Wales to attend Wimbledon men's singles final in second public appearance since cancer diagnosis - Sky News

The Princess of Wales will attend the men's final at Wimbledon on Sunday, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

It is set to be the second public appearance Kate has made since her cancer diagnosis was announced earlier this year after she attended Trooping the Colour last month.

The princess will attend the finale of the Championships on Sunday to present the men's trophy to either Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz, Kensington Palace said.

Kate has been a patron of the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club since 2016.

The princess shared in March she has been receiving preventative chemotherapy for an undisclosed form of cancer since late February.

Kate 'not of out the woods yet'

Ahead of her first public appearance since her diagnosis last month, she said she hoped "to join a few public engagements over the summer", but added she knows "I am not out of the woods yet".

"I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty," Kate said.

While Kate stays in the UK, Kensington Palace added that Prince William will fly to Berlin to cheer on England as they play Spain in the finals of Euro 2024.

As president of the FA, the prince also saw the Three Lions play against Switzerland and Denmark throughout the tournament.

Princess Royal a 'super trooper'

Both William and Kate also congratulated Princess Anne for her own return to royal duties on Saturday.

The Princess Royal visited the Riding for the Disabled Association's championships on Friday, marking the group's 55th anniversary.

It came after she received a minor head injury and concussion, believed to be caused by a horse, last month. She was discharged from hospital on 28 June.

On social media, the Prince and Princess of Wales called Anne a "super trooper" and added it is "so great to see you back so soon".

Bushey crossbow killings: family of victims say they are ‘devastated’ - The Guardian

A BBC racing commentator has said “the devastation we are experiencing cannot be put into words” after his wife and two daughters were killed in a crossbow attack.

Carol Hunt, 61, the wife of BBC 5 Live commentator John Hunt, and two of their daughters, Hannah, 28, and Louise, 25, were found fatally injured at a house in the quiet cul-de-sac of Ashlyn Close, in Bushey, Hertfordshire, just after 7pm on Tuesday.

Kyle Clifford, 26, was arrested on suspicion of their murders after he was found with injuries in the Hilly Fields area of Enfield, north London, on Wednesday.

Paying tribute to the three victims on Saturday, Hunt and his third daughter, Amy, said: “The devastation that we are experiencing cannot be put into words.

“We would like to thank people for their kind messages and for the support we have received in recent days. These have provided great comfort to us for which we are very grateful.

“As you can imagine, this is an extremely difficult time for us, and we need time and space to come to terms with what has happened and start the grieving process.”

A man has been arrested in Bristol in connection with the discovery of human remains in suitcases at Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Police are now no longer looking for anyone else after detaining the 34-year-old in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Forensic officers were seen going in and out of a property in Shepherd’s Bush, West London on Friday after more human remains were found.

It is believed that the remains in London are connected to those found in Bristol, and that there are still two male victims. Police think that the suspect travelled from London to Bristol on Wednesday, just before the suitcases were found.

Another man, 36, was arrested in Greenwich, London in connection with the discovery on Friday but they have now been released without charge.

Met Police’s deputy assistant commissioner Andy Valentine said: “This is a significant development in our investigation and I would like to thank the public for their support.”

‘These are heavy what’s in them bodies?’ Passer-by jokes with suspects ‘carrying bloody suitcases' across bridge

Giles Malone told LBC another women, who appeared to be a passerby, joked with the suspects about what was inside the “tatty suitcases” found later to be containing human remains.

“Another lady started to help them and the lady who was helping them said ‘these are the heaviest suitcases I’ve ever lifted. What’s in them? bodies?

“We sort of semi-joked about it but they didn’t say anything.”

Both cases contain what is believed to be human remains, police said.

He described the bags as “old, tatty suitcases - two big ones”, and identified one of the men as “African-American” and the other as “white”.

He added: “I was coming across the bridge to go up to Long Ashton and my dad says [it was closed] because there was national news about some suitcases found.

“I immediately looked at my wife and said ‘I wonder if that’s a coincidence from last night’.”

Witness describes suspect being chased

University of Bristol student Reece Wright told the BBC he had been walking near the bridge with his girlfriend on Wednesday evening.

“As we were walking along and got towards the other end, we thought we could see blood on the pavement of the bridge,” Mr Wright said.

“As we kept walking further along, we went down and turned and heard commotion behind us and we saw a cyclist chasing after a man who was just running away.

“He was making a lot of noise. They stopped and the guy managed to get away.”

Mr Wright said one of the suitcases, which was blue, had two wheels broken off and “red stuff which we now know to be blood leaking out of the side near the zip, it was quite graphic”.

Who is Kyle Clifford? The former soldier captured by police

The man captured by police after a mother and two daughters were killed in a crossbow attack was a former soldier with a brother serving life in prison for murder, it has emerged.

Kyle Clifford, 26, served briefly in the armed forces having, it is understood, been a member of the Queen’s Dragoon Guards before dropping out in 2022. After the army he briefly worked at a fire and security installation company, but left in July last year.

Born in Enfield in 1998, Clifford is understood to be the third of four children. His eldest brother Bradley Clifford was jailed for life in 2018 after mowing down a moped and beating a teenager to death in a rage after his “prized” red Ford Mustang was damaged.

Jockeys wear black armbands in tribute to John Hunt’s family

Jockeys at the Newmarket Racecourse wore black armbands on Thursday in tribute to the family of BBC racing commentator John Hunt.

A minute’s silence was also held for the crowd at Ladies’ Day to pay their respects, while fellow commentator Richard Hoiles paid tribute at the start of his coverage.

“It’s impossible to rationalise such a heinous, pointless and terrible act in modern-day society,” he is reported to have said. “I’ve known John for 30 years. If you spend even a few moments in his company, the odds are that the talk will turn to family.

“It has been a folklore that after our annual shindig at Christmas 20-odd years ago, we’d all retired to the local pub and out would come John’s wallet with pictures of the girls at primary school.

“Words just seem hollow and inadequate in such circumstances and all we can try and do is provide some crumb of comfort by trying to exhibit the warmth and respect in which John and his family are held.”

Holly Willoughby plotter Gavin Plumb jailed - after 'vile' kidnap, rape and murder plan had 'life-changing' impact - Sky News

A security guard has been jailed for plotting to kidnap, rape and murder TV presenter Holly Willoughby.

Gavin Plumb, 37, was obsessed with then This Morning host Willoughby, 43, who left the ITV show after 14 years last October following his arrest.

Mr Justice Edward Murray told Plumb he had intended to carry out a "sadistic, brutal and degrading" attack on Willoughby and "harm her husband and children".

He said Plumb hatched a plot so "horrifying, shocking and graphic in detail" the plans were not shared in open court.

"You are dangerous," he told him, as he sentenced Plumb to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 15 years and 85 days.

Prosecutor Alison Morgan KC told Chelmsford Crown Court on Friday before Plumb's sentencing his plot was "so depraved and vile" many of its details "were, by agreement, not reported in detail by representatives of the media".

She said Plumb's actions had been "life-changing" for Willoughby - both for her career and personal life - but the presenter wished to keep her full statement about the impact of his crimes private.

But Ms Morgan added: "The extent of the shock and fear caused by this offending has been impossible to convey."

Sentencing Plumb, Mr Justice Murray said he was satisfied his crimes had changed Willoughby's life. He praised the TV presenter's "considerable courage" displayed by waiving her right to anonymity in the case.

The judge told Plumb: "Your plan was hopelessly unrealistic for a number of reasons - including your poor physical health - but you clearly thought it was feasible.

"Although you talked about carrying out the plan on your own, I am sure that this was simply bravado.

"You always intended to carry out your plan to kidnap, rape and kill Ms Willoughby, but only if you could find the right man or men - the right 'crew' as you sometimes called it - to help you do it."

Turning to what Plumb said in his defence, the judge added: "Your claim in your evidence that you had bought chloroform to clean a stubborn stain on your living room carpet was a particularly clumsy and obvious lie."

Plumb initially showed no reaction as he was jailed, but as he was led to the cells he made an exasperated gesture raising both his hands.

Security guard's darkening obsession with TV star

At his trial, the court heard Plumb had been having graphic and highly sexualised conversations with others online about attacking Willoughby and other celebrities since December 2021.

In hundreds of messages shown to the jury, he shared deepfake porn images of Willoughby, pictures of her home and talked about booking time off work to carry out his plot.

Plumb's kidnap plans involved attempting to "ambush" Ms Willoughby at her family home - then taking the presenter to another location, which he suggested would be a "dungeon"-type room.

His plans were foiled after a US undercover police officer infiltrated an online group called Abduct Lovers and became concerned about Plumb's posts.

Plumb told the officer, who was using the pseudonym David Nelson, that he was "definitely serious" about his plot to kidnap Ms Willoughby.

The officer told jurors he believed Plumb posed an "imminent threat" to the presenter after meeting him on the Kik Messenger group.

Plumb said in messages he planned to target Willoughby in a "home invasion", using chloroform to subdue her and her husband, the TV producer Dan Baldwin, before tying them up, kidnapping her and repeatedly raping her.

He shared a video of his "kidnap kit" with the officer - who had gained his trust - and said he would slit Willoughby's throat before disposing of her body in a lake.

The officer, who told Plumb he would travel from New York to help him carry out the plan, alerted the FBI and police in the UK.

When Essex Police officers raided Plumb's flat in Harlow, Essex, they found bottles of chloroform and an "abduction kit" complete with cable ties.

In footage of the arrest, filmed on an officer's body-worn camera, a topless Plumb, when told he was being held over a plot to kidnap Willoughby, said: "I'm not gonna lie. She is a fantasy of mine."

Plumb wept after jurors last week unanimously convicted him of soliciting murder and inciting rape and kidnap.

In her opening to the jury, prosecutor Ms Morgan told the court about Plumb's previous convictions for false imprisonment and attempted kidnap, saying they showed he "knew what it would take to terrify and overpower a woman".

The offences involved the threat of sexual violence against four different young women.

Holly Willoughby plot suspect arrested

Plumb had argued in his defence that his plans for Willoughby were just online chat and fantasy.

Sasha Wass KC, mitigating for Plumb before his sentencing, argued he was "devastated to be the cause of such pain to her". She said he "worshipped and was obsessed by Ms Willoughby for a period of years, admittedly in a warped and bizarre manner".

His lawyer added Plumb "remains embarrassed and ashamed", and he "always expected" the online conversations that formed the focus of the trial "would remain private".

Willoughby issued a statement following the conclusion of the trial, saying women "should not be made to feel unsafe going about our daily lives and in our own homes".

She thanked the undercover police officer and the Metropolitan and Essex police forces for their swift response - and all those involved in the case "for ensuring that justice was done and that the defendant will not be able to harm any more women".

"I would also like to commend the bravery of his previous victims for speaking up at the time. Without their bravery this conviction may not have been possible," Willoughby said.

DCI Greg Wood, of Essex Police, described Plumb as a "calculating sexual predator" following the sentencing.

"He tried to claim throughout the trial that he was an obsessive fan and a fantasist - that is simply not true," he said.

"He planned this attack on Ms Willoughby over a two-year period, scoping her movements, seeking help from others and buying items to incapacitate and inflict violence."

He said the case has brought misogyny and violence against women and girls to the fore.

Teenager arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after Kent gurdwara attack - The Guardian

A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an attack at a gurdwara in Kent.

The 17-year-old boy from Gravesend is in custody having been arrested also on suspicion of a religiously aggravated public order offence, after police were called to the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara in the town at 8.10pm on Thursday.

Kent police said it was reported that a male had gone into the Sikh place of worship and tried to assault people there while armed with a bladed weapon. No one was seriously injured but two women needed treatment for cuts and bruises, the force added.

A bladed weapon was recovered from the scene and no one else is being sought by police.

Kent police’s Det Supt Ian Dyball said: “We understand the community’s concerns in relation to the events at the gurdwara, however we are treating it as an isolated incident.

“Patrols will remain in the area for reassurance and we thank the community for their ongoing support and assistance.”

A man has now been arrested in connection with a triple murder on Tuesday evening (9 July).

A 26-year-old man from Enfield was arrested on Thursday evening (11 July) on suspicion of three counts of murder.

Detective Superintendent Rob Hall, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with the victims’ family at this tragic time.

“The investigation is moving at pace and as a result, we have now arrested a man. Enquiries are continuing at this time.”

Police had been waiting to question Hertfordshire suspect Kyle Clifford, who was in hospital with serious injuries after a manhunt located him in a cemetery in Enfield.

Louise Hunt, aged 25, her sister Hannah, 28, and their mother Carol, 61 – the family of BBC racing commentator John Hunt – were found with fatal wounds at their home in Bushey on Tuesay evening.

Hannah’s boyfriend has paid tribute to “the love of my life” who was “stolen from me too soon”, as devastated friends and neighbours described the Hunts as “beautiful souls” and “the loveliest, gentlest family”.

‘It doesn’t seem real’

Speaking outside St James’ Church on Thursday after a vigil for Carol Hunt, 61, the wife of BBC 5 Live commentator John Hunt, and two of their daughters, Hannah, 28, and Louise, 25, friends of the family shared their shock.

Lea Holloway, 60, a childhood friend of Carol Hunt, described her as a “beautiful person”.

After being joined by two other close friends, Dionne Smith, 58, and Abigail Phillips, 58, the trio told reporters: “We were a four, and now there’s only three.

“It doesn’t seem real. We are together in grief.”
