Disturbing footage of police car ramming cow condemned by home secretary - The Independent

The home secretary has demanded an explanation after a video showing a cow being rammed by a police vehicle went viral on social media.

The video shows the animal loose in a residential street before the police car knocks it along the tarmac and then drives into it again, pinning it down.

Surrey Police said there had been reports of the cow running at people and damaging cars across Staines-Upon-Thames at around 9pm on Friday.

Footage appears to show a member of the public running away before the cow is rammed by a marked police 4x4 vehicle – to the shock of residents watching on.

Police say the cow sustained a large cut to its leg.

Among the social media users questioning the police officers’ actions was Home Secretary James Cleverly, who posted on X: “I can think of no reasonable need for this action. I’ve asked for a full, urgent explanation for this. It appears to be unnecessarily heavy-handed.”

BBC wildlife presenter and activist Chris Packham said: “I don’t know where to start with this.

“But it’s surely illegal and must be investigated and prosecuted. What sort of monster rams a calf? Twice?”

Police said a passer-by helped move the injured cow to a nearby farm in the early hours of Saturday.

The force said the owner has been located and that the cow will be assessed by a vet.

A Surrey Police spokesperson said: “Yesterday evening, at around 8.55pm, we received reports that a cow was running loose in Staines-upon-Thames.

“The cow was running loose throughout the evening on a number of main roads and, during this time, we received numerous calls from the public reporting a car being damaged and it running at members of the public.

“Given these reports, officers were extremely concerned about the public's safety, and over a period of a number of hours tried a number of options to safely capture the cow.

“Unfortunately, these were unsuccessful and the decision was made to stop it using a police car.”

He said the collision will be referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and the Professional Standards Department.

Chief Inspector Sam Adcock said: "I know that this has caused distress and I'd like to thank the community for their concern.

“The decision to use the police car is one that was only taken after other methods to stop the cow had failed.

“There will be an investigation into the actions that led to this, but our focus at all times is on ensuring the safety of the public.

"I know there are videos circulating of this incident, which the public may find distressing.

“I would ask that these videos are sent directly to us to help with our investigation."

Prince Louis steals the show again with dancing and yawning at Trooping the Colour - The Independent

All eyes were on Prince Louis at the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony, as the six-year-old charmed viewers with his varied reactions to the event – from debuting dance moves to pretending to fall asleep.

Louis and his elder siblings, Prince George, 10, and Princess Charlotte, nine, accompanied their mother Kate to the parade in her first appearance since revealing her cancer diagnosis in March.

The family rode in a glass horse-drawn carriage to the affair at Horse Guards Parade in London. William, the Prince of Wales, was also in attendance, but rode on horseback alongside his aunt, the Princess Royal, and his uncle, the Duke of Edinburgh.

King Charles, who is also being treated for an undisclosed form of cancer, inspected the troops alongside Queen Camilla from a different carriage.

After the carriage ride, Kate and the children left to take their viewing spots, where Louis was seen enjoying the celebrations.

As the British Grenadiers marched past the monarch, musicians played a bagpipe-led piece. When the cameras cut to the viewing spot, Louis was seen moving quickly in time with the music, while Kate watched him and smiled.

Louis entertained viewers when he played with the drawstring for the blinds, as well as fiddling with the window at the Duke of Wellington’s former office. The prince was also seen yawning and appearing to show his lack of interest as he scrunched up his face.

Prince Louis is known for drawing focus at events with his curiosity and excitable expressions. Previous Trooping the Colour ceremonies have seen the young royal pointing at the RAF Red Arrow fly-past, and saluting along with his relatives.

The annual ceremony marks the monarch’s official birthday. This year’s event is particularly significant for being the first public event that Kate has attended since her cancer diagnosis.

Kate announced on Friday that she would attend the King’s Birthday Parade after making “good progress” in her treatment.

“I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days,” Kate said in a statement, adding that she faces “a few more months” of treatment.

Admitting that she is “not out of the woods yet”, the Princess said she has returned to light duties and helping her three children with their schoolwork when she feels well enough.

King Charles was also diagnosed with cancer this year, and has eased back into various duties such as the D-Day 80th anniversary celebrations in Normandy last week.

Elsewhere at Saturday’s event, the royal family travelled in various carriages to Buckingham Palace amid a heavy rain shower for the event’s conclusion: the 41-gun salute and the Red Arrows fly-past.

George, Charlotte and Louis accompanied their mother in the carriage once again, and were seen wiping the steamy windows and waving to the cheering public.

Chris Mason: What Farage poll boost means for the election - BBC.com

Mason: What Farage poll boost means for the election

Reform UK Leader Nigel Farage makes an election speech in London, Britain, 14 June 2024. Britain is to hold a snap election on 04 July 2024.

For the first time, a single opinion poll shaped a day on the campaign trail.

A poll from YouGov suggested Reform UK had overtaken the Conservatives for the first time.

It is worth reflecting on that for a moment: one of the most successful political parties in the Western world and the current party of UK government, being outpolled by a party barely a few years old.

But hang on a minute: polls that make news deserve scepticism, because the most eye-catching polls are usually the outliers - and it is the trend in opinion polls that is key.

It is that trend, in my judgement, that made this moment noteworthy, though, because Reform UK have seen their polling numbers improve throughout this campaign so far.

You can read Professor John Curtice's analysis of the polls here.

But, Nigel Farage has had false dawns before.

The First Past the Post voting system at Westminster means parties need geographically concentrated pockets of support to win seats.

Moderate support in lots of places can mean stacking up a lot of votes and getting next to no seats.

In 2015, UKIP stacked up nearly four million votes but managed just one seat.

Mr Farage reckons six million votes are possible this time, maybe more.

His influence after the election will depend on four things, in this order:

In a scenario where the Tories do very badly indeed, he wins a seat and so do some other Reform candidates, his capacity to help shape the future of the Right could be very significant.

But it is also possible, as one senior Conservative suggested in a text exchange I had earlier, that this is a "Farage honeymoon".

And it is possible too that at least some of the many, many folk who are telling Conservative canvassers on the doorstep that they don't know how they will vote may plump for the Tories in the end.

At Nigel Farage's latest news conference, the Reform UK leader stood behind a battered old lectern.

The party logo was a print out on A4 paper sticky taped to it in the nick of time.

A graphic which reads 'more on general election 2024'

It was a reminder that Nigel Farage's latest party is an upstart outfit, short of money and short of time.

He admits his team aren't nearly as ready as they would like to be.

He adds that the Liberal Democrats - also up in the polls in the first three weeks of this campaign - have a far more impressive campaigning machine than they do.

But there’s no shortage of ambition, chutzpah or appetite to provoke dizzying discombobulation among Conservatives.

Mr Farage believes the Conservative Party is world weary, divided and clapped out.

So he can frighten the life out of at least some of them and let questions swirl about whether he wants to overtake them, take them over, or finish them off.

That's a soap opera to come, maybe, if he manages to make it to the Commons.

For now, though, all this means many Tories zoom from gloom to doom, their grinning tormentor showing them no mercy this time.

Family of student missing for 100 days offer up £20k reward for information - The Independent

The family of a missing student have set a £20,000 reward for information that leads to him being found.

Jack O’Sullivan, 23, was last seen over 100 days ago in the Hotwells area of Bristol after walking home from a party.

A GoFundMe fundraising page has been set up by a friend of the family, raising the £20,000 for information that could “reignite the search efforts” for Mr O’Sullivan and overcome a “standstill” in the case.

The page adds that if the reward money goes unclaimed, the funds will be donated to the charity Missing People.

Police say they have spoken to hundreds of taxi drivers in the area Jack was last seen and reviewed thousands of hours of CCTV - but Jack has still not been found.

"Jack’s parents, Catherine and Alan and his older brother Ben have decided that a £20,000 reward for information leading to the discovery of Jack is needed to help spark new leads and reignite the search efforts,” a statement on the page reads.

"They need your help to achieve this. Any donations will stay with GoFundMe until such time as the reward is given out.

"In the event that the reward goes unclaimed, all money raised will be donated to the charity Missing People, who have been supporting the O’Sullivan’s throughout this difficult time. At this point you will also have the option to request that your donation is returned.

"Every donation, big or small, may help bring them closer to bringing Jack home. Thank you for your support and generosity."

The family of the 23-year-old complained earlier this week that they had lost all faith in Avon and Somerset Police finding their son, and had lodged a formal complaint, after they realised that crucial CCTV evidence in the disappearance of their son had been missed by the police

Parents Catherine and Alan O’Sullivan’s distress has been made worse after they were informed that the force had failed to add the Bristol student to the national missing persons register, which is operated by the charity Missing People, due to an administrative error, despite his being missing for more than two months.

“I wouldn’t want anyone on earth to be faced with what we’ve dealt with in the last 100 days, because it is horrific,” Mrs O’Sullivan told BBC News.

“We have to live with the fact that Jack’s not here, but to find that the people who could have been looking for him haven’t done it properly is just devastating.”

Teenage neo-Nazi who planned suicide bomb attack on synagogue jailed for eight years - Sky News

A sixth form student from Brighton who drew up plans for a suicide bomb attack on a local synagogue has been jailed for eight years for terrorism offences.

Mason Reynolds, 19, from Moulscoomb was a student studying bricklaying and roofing and doing part-time labouring work on the side.

He lived with his parents and was described as leading "in many ways, a not untypical existence of a young man in his late teens".

However, Naomi Parsons, prosecuting, told Winchester Crown Court that Reynolds was a neo-Nazi who believed the white race was "destined to dominate the rest of mankind".

She said Reynolds "does not find himself here because he has political, racial or ideological views that some may find distasteful or indeed abhorrent".

"He is here because he has not just held those political, racial and ideological views, he has acted on them."

When Reynolds was arrested, police found a note on his phone created on 7 May 2023 entitled "Enough Larping" - a call to action that referred to ending his "live action role play".

More on Brighton

The note included a 13-second video from Google Maps showing the exterior of Hove Synagogue, and Reynolds had listed its address and the CCTV cameras and fire exits.

He added: "Possible buzzer to get into the building, 1 camera on left side (side entrance locked by gate)."

On another image he had marked "quickest and efficient way in", adding: "Could be good for surprise attack."

Reynolds had attached images of synagogues in Missouri and Washington in the US and in Edinburgh as "examples of what to expect inside".

Underneath he had written: "The Jewish holidays that tend to have the most people in synagogues are Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Passover."

In June, Reynolds produced an image on a video app called CapCut with the words "Make Jews Afraid Again".

Later on the same day, a discussion took place on Telegram with another teenager using the sign-on AR15 - a reference to an assault rifle.

Reynolds told him: "I wanna strap multiple pipe [bombs] to my chest and blow myself up inside a synagogue… I have a plan."

Without identifying his target, he told the other user: "They won't let me through the buzzer door if suspicious, like Stephan Balliet" - a reference to a German-born neo-Nazi who used homemade weapons to kill two people, after failing to get into a synagogue in Halle, Germany, in October 2019.

Police also discovered Reynolds had copies of the Mujahideen's Explosives Handbook, the Terrorist's Handbook, and the Anarchist Cookbook on his computer, along with files used to make a 3D printed assault rifle called the FGC-9.

Reynolds was one of two administrators for the "Far-Right Sigmas" channel on the Telegram app, a neo-Nazi propaganda channel which was set up in late November 2022 by "AR15" in Poland.

The channel promoted the view that society was in decay and the fault lay with Jewish people who controlled the financial institutions, the media and encouraged immigration, resulting in the "dilution" of the white race.

The channel had nearly 350 subscribers and produced content that glorified Nazis including Adolf Hitler, Joseph Goebbels, and Heinrich Himmler, leader of the Waffen SS, as well as far-right killers including Anders Breivik, Brenton Tarrant, and Dylann Roof, who killed nine black people at a church in Charleston, South Carolina.

"It hoped, it seems, to create neo-Nazis of the future," Ms Parsons said.

One of the clips circulated by Reynolds featured Stephan Balliet, who livestreamed his attempted attack with homemade rifles and bombs.

Speaking of Tarrant, who livestreamed an attack that killed 51 people in two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, Reynolds commented: "It'd be 10x better seeing Jews get killed."

In the channel's chatroom, Reynolds also distributed videos of the Christchurch attack, and Breivik's attack in Norway in 2011, which killed 67 people.

Much of the material on the channel was edited from propaganda produced by an organisation called Atomwaffen Division, a US based terrorist organisation banned by the UK government in July 2021.

Reynolds pleaded guilty to four offences of possessing material useful for terrorism and five offences of distributing material likely to encourage terrorism. He was found guilty of possessing an article for terrorist purposes.

After his arrest, Reynolds told police he was hurt that his friends viewed him as someone who was "all talk and no action" and wanted them to stop calling him a "LARP" - live action role player.

He had written the note in 15 minutes, forgot to delete it and thought no more about it, he said.

Jailing Reynolds for eight years with an extended licence of five years, Mrs Justice May accepted that he did nothing to carry his plan and that his "secret life" was now out in the open.

But she said she considered him "dangerous" and added: "These ideas are immensely attractive, to young men in particular, and while only a small fraction of those who hold these beliefs act on them, the consequences are catastrophic as history has shown."

Election latest: Farage says Reform 'new opposition' and makes false vote fraud claim - The Independent

Key takeaways from Labour's general election manifesto

Nigel Farage has claimed the Conservative Party is “about to implode” as his Reform UK party overtook the Tories in the latest YouGov poll.

In his closing speech of the seven-way ITV debate on Thursday night, the Reform leader said: “Britain is broken, everyone knows it and Britain needs Reform.

“Rishi Sunak won’t do it, he’ll probably be in California by then anyway. And the Tory Party is split down the middle and about to implode in this election.”

It comes as he declared that his Reform Party is “now the opposition to Labour” after a YouGov poll published by The Times showed them one per cent above the Conservatives.

“Just before we came on air we overtook the Conservatives in the national opinion polls,” Mr Farage said, as he made his opening speech during an ITV debate. “We are now the opposition to Labour.”

Immigration, education and taxes were the centrepiece topics for the seven-way debate with Angela Rayner, Labour’s deputy leader, taking the brunt of the other leaders’ questions.

Farage blames Tories for post-Brexit migration

Nigel Farage has claimed the reason Brexit has failed on migration is because the Conservatives “haven’t delivered”.

The Reform leader said the Tories promised to reduce net migration, which he claimed is “running at three quarters of a million” slamming it “complete breach of trust”.

He told the BBC Breakfast: “Be in no doubt, we are in charge in these things. Brexit gives us self-governance. It doesn’t guarantee success, but it does mean we’re in charge.”

Pollster: Reform lead result bad news for Tories

Leading polling expert John Curtice has reminded voters that the YouGov poll is just one poll and there’s been four others in the last 24 hours, none of which have had Reform ahead and not all have had Reform gaining ground.

But he says this is still “bad news” for the Conservatives and that the only way for Sunak to get to “base camp” in narrowing the lead with Labour is to squeeze the Reform vote.

Mr Curtice claims it is because all Reform votes come from former Conservative supporters.

Farage convinced Reform will win ‘four million’ of votes

Nigel Farage has said Reform UK have no seats targeted for the general election.

The Reform leader told the BBC Breakfast: “We are looking this time at many, many more votes than four million. We are hoping to get through the electoral threshold.

“Whatever we do, we may not get the number of seats we deserve. But are we going to win seats in Parliament? Yes. How many? There is three weeks to go, we have got momentum behind us.”

Slamming the Tory party he says it has not “moved one bit in the polls” and his ambition is to face Labour as the new opposition.

Tory vote ‘enables’ Labour government, says Nigel Farage

Voting for the Conservatives would “enable” a Labour government, Nigel Farage has claimed, after Reform UK overtook the Tories for the first time in a major poll of public opinion during the election campaign.

A YouGov survey commissioned by the Times newspaper had Reform at 19% to the Conservatives 18% of voting intention, in a crossover moment which is the latest blow to Tory hopes of returning to Government.

Mr Farage lauded the poll and presented his party as now being the “opposition to Labour” for voters, as he and other leading political figures took part in a seven-way ITV debate.

In a flip of Conservative campaign rhetoric, he also claimed that voting for the Tories over Reform would enable a Labour government.

Labour sits in the lead at 37% of voting intention, according to YouGov, with the Liberal Democrats at 14%, the Greens at 7%, the SNP at 3%, Plaid Cymru at 1% and others at 2%.

Minister downplays Reform overtaking the Tories in polls

Bim Afolami has dismissed the suggestion that Reform overtaking the Tories in an opinion poll is what the Conservative party “feared”.

The economic secretary to the Treasury told Times Radio: “No. Polls are polls. There is pretty much a poll every single day in this campaign. There will be more. This is one poll out of literally hundreds.

“What it does show is that there is significant difficulty of Keir Starmer having unchecked power to do all the things like tax your home, your job, your car and your pension if people vote Reform.

“A vote for Reform is a vote for Keir Starmer.”
