Co-op Live crisis - situation being "monitored closely" as builders vow to complete work - Manchester Evening News

The builders of the new Co-op Live arena say they are "working diligently" to complete works amid the latest crisis to hit the as-yet-to-open venue. The situation is being "monitored closely" by city bigwigs after the opening of the £365m venue was pulled at the very last minute for a third time on Wednesday night.

Bosses revealed that a nozzle from the ventilation and air conditioning system fell to the ground from the ceiling shortly before last night’s event. No one was injured, but the venue management decided to pull the plug on the performance from Bronx rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie.

Fans were left queing outside just minutes before doors were due to open for the gig. Staff and fans were seen in tears outside the venue after bosses announced they would need to "leave the area" after the cancellation.

The 23,500-capacity venue will be the biggest indoor arena in Europe when it does officially open its doors.

Nicki Minaj, The Eagles, Barry Manilow and Eric Clapton are all due to play the arena in coming weeks, but so far only a test event by Rick Astley has gone ahead. Thousands of fans, for the third time, were left disappointed after turning up for an event only for it to be cancelled.

After the gig, arena bosses announced that Olivia Rodrigo's Friday and Saturday night shows were also being pulled as a result of the incident.

The main contractor for the arena, the construction firm BAM said today: “The safety of fans and staff is our number one priority.

“Unfortunately, in the run-up to last night’s concert, an issue arose that meant the difficult decision was made to cancel the event. We apologise for the inconvenience that this has caused for many.

"Our team continues to work diligently on completing works to the arena."

Work ongoing at the Co-op Live arena

The “embarrassing” fiasco has led to questions and criticism of how the arena’s opening has been handled.

Sacha Lord, appointed by mayor Andy Burnham as the night time economy adviser for Greater Manchester, made his first statement about the issues with the Arena to the PA news agency on Thursday.

He said: "As with all event venues, the safety of staff and customers is the highest priority even if that means there are delays.

"We are monitoring the situation closely."

The MEN understands Mr Lord is also working in the background to assess how the Co-op Live chaos is affecting the city's hoteliers.

Manchester City Council said the authority’s building control is yet to sign the building off, though this is routine procedure until all “snagging” is completed - and venues can operate without a completion certificate.

It is believed that two shows originally set to take place at Co-op Live could now be relocated to the AO Arena
Co-op Live at Eastlands

The earlier test show featuring Rick Astley had attendances slashed, and in the days that followed further gigs by Peter Kay and The Black Keys were pulled, after an issue with emergency services communications systems.

The arena, run by US-based Oak View Group, has confirmed shows by US musician Olivia Rodrigo as part of her world tour will also not now go ahead on May 3 and 4. No details have been released on rescheduling those gigs as yet.

Tim Leiweke, chairman and chief executive of the Oak View Group, said: “The safety and security of all visiting and working on Co-op Live is our utmost priority, and we could not and will not run any event until it is absolutely safe to do so.

“I deeply apologise for the impact that this has had on ticket holders and fans.”

The Co-operative Group, which has reportedly paid up to £100m in a 15-year deal to have its name on the ill-fated arena, said it was "shocked" by the latest incident and will seek a “full explanation” from Oak View Group.

A general view of Co-op Live Arena in Manchester
The Co-op Live arena is just a stone's throw from Manchester City's Etihad Stadium home

In a statement the firm said on Wednesday: "As the naming rights sponsor for Co-op Live, we are shocked at the incident which has led to late cancellation of tonight’s show at the arena.

"We are relieved that no-one has been injured, but we share the disappointment and frustration of ticket holders, many of whom are Co-op members, with the continuing delay to the opening of Co-op Live and the disruption that this is causing to everyone who has been looking forward to attending events.

"We will be seeking a full explanation from Oak View Group (OVG), who are responsible for the building, to the obvious questions arising from this, together with a clear plan from the Co-op Live venue management team at OVG for opening the venue and postponed and future events."

Steve Millington, professor of place management at Manchester Metropolitan University, said: “In the short term, it’s not good is it?

“It is embarrassing really and you do wonder what’s gone on in the planning or development. There seems to be a lot of problems.

“Ultimately in the long-run, in 10 years time, nobody will be talking about this, but you do wonder what the Co-op are getting out of this.

"People were asking questions whether Manchester needed a second indoor arena, three miles down the road from the one in the city centre."

The AO Arena could be hosting two shows affected by delays at Co-op Live
The AO Arena will be hosting the Boogie Wit Da Hoodie show after Co-op Live's fiasco

Co-op Live had already postponed its opening twice last week after rescheduling performances from Peter Kay and The Black Keys, and had initially reassured fans that A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and Rodrigo’s shows would be going ahead this week. The AO Arena is now to stage the rescheduled A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie show on Saturday night, promoters Live Nation have just confirmed.

OVG Run around 400 venues across the world, mainly in North America, but this is its first venture in the UK, the firm’s website promising, “synergistic opportunities in the live entertainment space globally”.

OVG claims the Co-op Live arena will be "world leading" boasting their venues “go beyond the limits of what we once thought possible to deliver the very best in live entertainment.”

Harry Styles has invested in the project, in the shadow of Manchester City's Etihad stadium, the arena a joint venture with OVG and the club’s owner’s City Football Group. Once open, the venue will generate an estimated £1.5bn for the local economy, according to OVG.

Count underway for mayoral and council contests as Tory losses predicted - The Independent

Sadiq Khan casts his vote in the London Mayoral election

Rishi Sunak is braced for heavy losses in the local elections as rebel Tories plot to oust him if key mayoral contests are lost in what has been described as a potential “armageddon” weekend for the prime minister.

Ahead of the first results coming in overnight, a bombshell new poll found the Tories are now even less popular under Mr Sunak than during the calamitous premiership of Liz Truss.

Early indications from Sunderland pointed to a strong performance for Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, with the right-wing challenger party beating the Tories in a slew of the seats up for grabs.

The results will heighten the nerves of Conservative MPs as two days of counting begins.

One Tory MP told The Independent that a move against Mr Sunak is “likely” if either West Midlands mayor Andy Street or Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen lose their jobs.

Former chancellor George Osborne said on his Political Currency podcast: “If Andy Street loses in the West Midlands, that’s pretty bad ...[but] If Ben Houchen loses it will be armageddon – because at that point, people will say, ‘We are absolutely headed now for a massive landslide defeat’.”

Labour is expected to win a by-election taking place in Blackpool South.

Hartlepool and Thurrock Labour gains confirmed

Labour won nine of the 12 seats up for grabs in Hartlepool to gain control of the council, with independents winning two and the Conservatives one.

A spokesman said: “Winning back Hartlepool council is a groundbreaking moment after the disappointing results we saw here in 2021.”

The party’s gain of Thurrock council has also been confirmed after the party announced it thinks it has won.

Professor Sir John Curtice: ‘Real story is Reform and the Greens’

Britain’s top polling guru has said we are “endlessly” focused on the battle between Labour and the Tories, but the story tonight is of big gains for Reform UK and the Green Party.

Professor Sir John Curtice said Nigel Farage’s challenger party is doing “damage” to the Conservatives where they are standing.

And he said the Greens are making “spectacular gains”, pointing to the party’s success in Newcastle.

“They may be heading for their best performance yet in English local elections,” he told the BBC.

Reform has made significant gains, beating the Conservatives in 16 of the 25 seats it contested in Sunderland.

Labour claims it has gained Thurrock

Labour has hailed a “key” gain in Thurrock, claiming to have gained control of the council from it being in no overall control.

The local authority was the fourth highest leave voting in Britain in the Brexit referendum, and was won by the Conservatives a year ago but moved into no overall control due to defections.

A Labour Party spokesman said: “This is exactly the kind of place we need to be winning to gain a majority in a general election. The people of Thurrock have sent the Conservatives a message that they want change.”

Labour keeps South Tyneside but suffers heavy losses

Labour retained control of South Tyneside, but lost at least seven seats to independents.

The party needed to win four seats of the 14 seats it held going into polling day, and while it achieved that, its majority will be reduced.

It has been suffering heavy losses to independent candidates challenging its stance on the war in Gaza.

Labour also retained control of Newcastle-upon-Tyne after winning 12 of the first 19 seats to be declared early on Friday morning.

The party held 46 of the 78 council seats going into polling day and needed to win 10 of the 27 being contested to retain control.

The Liberal Democrats had won four, Greens two and independents one, with eight seats still to declare.

Alarm bells for Rishi Sunak after Reform UK’s performance in Sunderland

The final result in Sunderland was Labour 18, Liberal Democrats four and Conservatives three, with Reform UK beating the Tories in 16 of the 25 seats being contested.

James Johnson, co-founder of JL Partners and a former Downing Street pollster during Theresa May’s tenure, said: “Some of these Sunderland results are truly torrid for the Conservatives and are showing that - in Sunderland at least - Reform UK is real.”

It is thought the party will deprive the Tories of tens of seats in the general election.

Broxbourne becomes first council to declare

The Conservatives could not have lost control of the council whatever the result, as it started the night with 27 of the 30 seats.

The first council to declare its full result on Friday morning was Broxbourne in Hertfordshire, where the Conservatives won nine and Labour one of the 10 seats being contested, meaning no seats changed hands.

Labour gains Hartlepool council, spokesman

A Labour Party spokesman has said it won back Hartlepool council, describing it as a “groundbreaking moment” after disappointment in the area in 2021.

Sir Keir Starmer has admitted he considered quitting as Labour leader after the party lost both the Hartlepool by-election and council seats three years ago.

A spokesman said: “Winning back Hartlepool council is a groundbreaking moment after the disappointing results we saw here in 2021.

“Keir Starmer pledged to change the Labour Party after that result, and today’s win shows that this changed Labour party is ready to deliver the change that communities like Hartlepool are crying out for.

“Making gains here shows that the Party is on track to win a general election and is firmly back in the service of working people.”

Chris Heaton-Harris: Vote Reform, get Labour

Cabinet minister Chris Heaton-Harris said the results in Sunderland showed "if you vote Reform, you get Labour".

The Northern Ireland Secretary told the BBC: "It’s a very straightforward equation for people at the next general election.

"If they want to vote Reform, they’ll end up with Labour MPs, and they’ll end up with a Labour government, and then they’ll end up, probably, with everything they didn’t want to vote for based on the profile of Reform voters."

Tory minister admits Conservatives will lose Blackpool South

Cabinet minister Chris Heaton-Harris accepted that Blackpool South was likely to be lost by the Conservatives.

The Northern Ireland Secretary said it was "going to be a tough seat for us to hold" given the scandal which led to it.

He told the BBC: "You are highly unlikely to be rewarded by the electorate. Electorates do not like by-elections being put on them because of a failing like that.

"From the very start I would have expected to lose Blackpool South."

Kate Forbes not in the running for SNP leadership - BBC

Humza Yousaf may be first minister, but the Tory leader is already taking aim at his would-be successor.

Douglas Ross called John Swinney the safe pair of hands who has dropped the ball.

He painted the SNP leadership candidate as a failure in office, and a divisive nationalist.

All this, of course, assumes Mr Swinney has already won the leadership.

Labour's Anas Sarwar accused the SNP of a stitch-up for John Swinney, and clinging onto power.

But Humza Yousaf didn't hold back - blaming Mr Ross's Tory party for austerity, Brexit and a cost-of-living crisis.

And he accused Labour of U-turns on EU membership and progressive taxation, and of failing to match an SNP commitment on affordable homes.

Police attend ‘critical incident’ amid reports of stabbing near Hainault Tube station

A man has been charged with the murder of 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin following the sword attack in Hainault, east London, on Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police say. He is Marcus Aurelio Arduini Monzo, 36.

Daniel’s family have said he was “a wonderful child” who was well loved and hard-working, adding that his death left “a gaping wound” in the family.

“No family should have to go through what we are experiencing today,” they told told Sky News.

Friends and teachers have lavishly praised Daniel – who was killed in a sword attack in north London – as “an amazing young man” and a “true scholar”.

Police have pledged to deliver justice for the teenager who attended the same private school as Nottingham stabbing victim Grace O’Malley-Kumar.

Bancroft’s School in Woodford Green, which said it was devastated by his killing, paid tribute to him as “a true scholar, demonstrating commendable dedication to his academic pursuits,” adding: “His positive nature and gentle character will leave a lasting impact on us.”

Grace was killed last June as she tried to save her friend, Barnaby Webber, from their killer Valdo Calocane.

Two police officers injured in line of duty in Hainault are ‘recuperating well'

Two police officers injured in the line of duty in Hainault are “recuperating well”, Rick Prior, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, has said.

Asked about the officers’ condition, he told Radio 4’s Today programme: “Two officers were very seriously injured. The male officer suffered a serious injury to his hand and our female colleague suffered what has been described as horrifically serious injuries to her arm, where I believe it was touch and go whether or not she would actually be able to get the use of that arm back.

“But I understand that they are doing well, they are recuperating well, and as a federation we are offering all the support that we possibly can.”

US singer Olivia Rodrigo has expressed her disappointment after becoming the latest act to fall foul of a crisis at Manchester's troubled Co-op Live arena.

She was due to launch her UK tour with two sold-out gigs at the new venue this weekend, but they have been called off.

The decision came after the arena's opening was postponed for a third time on Wednesday when a fault scuppered a gig by rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie.

Rodrigo told fans she was "sooooo disappointed" not to perform her shows.

"I'm so bummed and I really hope to see you all soon," the chart-topping pop star wrote on Instagram, saying she and her team were "doing our best" to reschedule the concerts.

The decision to postpone major shows by one of the world's biggest artists is another big embarrassment for the Manchester arena after a series of delays.

The £365m venue, the UK's largest indoor arena with space for 23,500 people, was due to be opened by comedian Peter Kay last week, but his shows have been postponed twice.

Bosses decided Rodrigo's shows could not go ahead after A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie's concert was cancelled at the last minute on Wednesday.

Thousands of his fans were waiting outside the venue when they were informed about the announcement, which came 10 minutes after doors had been due to open.

The arena's operators blamed an incident during the soundcheck, when "a component of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, used to direct air, separated from the ductwork".

They said no-one had been injured and that they were "deeply sorry", but the whole system would need to be tested for further defects.

Ticket-holders, many of whom had travelled for miles, were left disappointed, and the rapper wrote on social media: "I'm heated about the situation too, but safety first Manchester, I got you, just stay tuned for further info."

Rodrigo's fans have also had their plans wrecked, with many left out of pocket. Scott Tostevin, from Guernsey, had booked flights and a hotel for himself and two friends to see her on Friday night.

He told the BBC the group had spent several hundred pounds on the trip.

"I can either use my flights and hotel to now sit and watch a film in Manchester or lose the money and just cancel it all with no refunds," he said.

The venue's operators, Oak View Group, said they appreciated "the inconvenience" this would cause for "many". The fault had been caused by a "factory defect" with a nozzle used to direct air, they added.

However, staff were unable to verify that other such nozzles were free of similar problems.

The next show in the schedule is Keane on Sunday, followed by a five-night residency by Take That next week.

The venue said it understood "the need to reassure fans over future shows", but did not rule out further postponements.

"We are working with artist management and promoters to limit the impact on the opening season schedule," its statement said.

"Where necessary, we will identify alternate dates, and will continually reassess to provide fans with sufficient notice regarding imminent shows.

"Should shows be cancelled or rescheduled, fans will be contacted by their point of purchase and offered a full refund where preferred."

Oak View Group chief executive Tim Leiweke apologised to fans but defended the cancellation.

He added: "The safety and security of all visiting and working on Co-op Live is our utmost priority, and we could not and will not run any event until it is absolutely safe to do so.

"Today was a very unexpected situation but without a doubt the right decision."

Sponsors seek explanation

The Co-operative Group, which sponsors the venue, said it was "shocked" by what had happened.

A spokesperson said: "We are relieved that no-one has been injured, but we share the disappointment and frustration of ticket holders, many of whom are Co-op members, with the continuing delay to the opening of Co-op Live and the disruption that this is causing to everyone who has been looking forward to attending events.

"We will be seeking a full explanation from Oak View Group, who are responsible for the building, to the obvious questions arising from this, together with a clear plan from the Co-op Live venue management team at OVG for opening the venue and postponed and future events."

Last week, Co-op Live's general manager Gary Roden resigned following the initial delays and a backlash over comments he had made about some smaller live music venues being "poorly run".

Rebecca Kane-Burton, who has run the O2 arena in London and Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber's LW Theatres, was drafted in to replace him.

Rodrigo opened the European section of her Guts world tour in Dublin on Tuesday, but now has a gap in her diary before dates in Glasgow, Birmingham and London.

Her tour made headlines in the US when contraceptives and morning-after pills were handed out at a concert in Missouri, where abortion is banned.
