Moment police take down Hainault sword attack suspect captured on home CCTV

The moment police tasered the sword-wielding Hainault suspect on Tuesday, 30 April, was caught on doorbell camera footage. A 14-year-old boy died and four other people were injured in the attack in east London. Authorities confirmed two of those injured were Metropolitan Police officers. A 36-year-old man was tasered and arrested at the scene but has not yet been interviewed because of injuries, the Met said. The incident is not believed to be a targeted attack, nor terror-related, police added. King Charles III has offered his sympathies to “all those affected” by the “horrific” stabbings, “In particular, the family of the young victim who has lost his life,” Buckingham Palace said.

Spray and Taser did not subdue suspect, police say

Giving more detail of how the attack happened, Scotland Yard said initial attempts to use incapacitant spray and Taser on the suspect were not effective.

It was not until he was cornered by officers in a driveway and a stun gun fired again that he could be subdued.

Detective Chief Inspector Larry Smith said: “This is an incredibly tragic incident that has resulted in a young boy losing his life and his family devastated.

“On behalf of the family, I would ask that their privacy is respected.

“I know that many people will want answers and we are working to provide them as soon as we can. I would also echo previous calls for patience as my officers carry out a painstaking investigation to deliver justice for Daniel, his family, those injured and the wider community.

“We are starting to build a picture of what happened on Tuesday and I want to thank everyone who has come forward to share dashcam, doorbell and mobile phone footage with us.

“Likewise, thank you to witnesses, who were no doubt terrified by what they saw, and who have made vital contributions to our investigation. Anyone who has not yet spoken to police and has any information should contact us as soon as possible.”

Olivia Rodrigo's Manchester tour dates fall foul of Co-op Live arena fiasco - BBC

Rodrigo smiles at the crowd as she plays piano on stageGetty Images

US singer Olivia Rodrigo has expressed her disappointment after becoming the latest act to fall foul of a crisis at Manchester's troubled Co-op Live arena.

She was due to launch her UK tour with two sold-out gigs at the new venue this weekend, but they have been called off.

The decision came after the arena's opening was postponed for a third time on Wednesday when a fault scuppered a gig by rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie.

Rodrigo told fans she was "sooooo disappointed" not to perform her shows.

"I'm so bummed and I really hope to see you all soon," the chart-topping pop star wrote on Instagram, saying she and her team were "doing our best" to reschedule the concerts.

The decision to postpone major shows by one of the world's biggest artists is another big embarrassment for the Manchester arena after a series of delays.

The £365m venue, the UK's largest indoor arena with space for 23,500 people, was due to be opened by comedian Peter Kay last week, but his shows have been postponed twice.

Co-op Live exterior

Bosses decided Rodrigo's shows could not go ahead after A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie's concert was cancelled at the last minute on Wednesday.

Thousands of his fans were waiting outside the venue when they were informed about the announcement, which came 10 minutes after doors had been due to open.

The arena's operators blamed an incident during the soundcheck, when "a component of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, used to direct air, separated from the ductwork".

They said no-one had been injured and that they were "deeply sorry", but the whole system would need to be tested for further defects.

Ticket-holders, many of whom had travelled for miles, were left disappointed, and the rapper wrote on social media: "I'm heated about the situation too, but safety first Manchester, I got you, just stay tuned for further info."

Rodrigo's fans have also had their plans wrecked, with many left out of pocket. Scott Tostevin, from Guernsey, had booked flights and a hotel for himself and two friends to see her on Friday night.

He told the BBC the group had spent several hundred pounds on the trip.

"I can either use my flights and hotel to now sit and watch a film in Manchester or lose the money and just cancel it all with no refunds," he said.

The venue's operators, Oak View Group, said they appreciated "the inconvenience" this would cause for "many". The fault had been caused by a "factory defect" with a nozzle used to direct air, they added.

However, staff were unable to verify that other such nozzles were free of similar problems.

The next show in the schedule is Keane on Sunday, followed by a five-night residency by Take That next week.

The venue said it understood "the need to reassure fans over future shows", but did not rule out further postponements.

"We are working with artist management and promoters to limit the impact on the opening season schedule," its statement said.

"Where necessary, we will identify alternate dates, and will continually reassess to provide fans with sufficient notice regarding imminent shows.

"Should shows be cancelled or rescheduled, fans will be contacted by their point of purchase and offered a full refund where preferred."

Oak View Group chief executive Tim Leiweke apologised to fans but defended the cancellation.

He added: "The safety and security of all visiting and working on Co-op Live is our utmost priority, and we could not and will not run any event until it is absolutely safe to do so.

"Today was a very unexpected situation but without a doubt the right decision."

Sponsors seek explanation

The Co-operative Group, which sponsors the venue, said it was "shocked" by what had happened.

A spokesperson said: "We are relieved that no-one has been injured, but we share the disappointment and frustration of ticket holders, many of whom are Co-op members, with the continuing delay to the opening of Co-op Live and the disruption that this is causing to everyone who has been looking forward to attending events.

"We will be seeking a full explanation from Oak View Group, who are responsible for the building, to the obvious questions arising from this, together with a clear plan from the Co-op Live venue management team at OVG for opening the venue and postponed and future events."

Last week, Co-op Live's general manager Gary Roden resigned following the initial delays and a backlash over comments he had made about some smaller live music venues being "poorly run".

Rebecca Kane-Burton, who has run the O2 arena in London and Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber's LW Theatres, was drafted in to replace him.

Rodrigo opened the European section of her Guts world tour in Dublin on Tuesday, but now has a gap in her diary before dates in Glasgow, Birmingham and London.

Her tour made headlines in the US when contraceptives and morning-after pills were handed out at a concert in Missouri, where abortion is banned.

Stab victim ‘was amazing, much loved young man'

Friends of victim Daniel Anjorin have praised him as “an amazing young man, much loved by many people”.

Janti Charalambous, whose son attended Snaresbrook Prep School with Daniel, dropped off a bag of supplies to the Anjorin family on Wednesday afternoon.

Afterwards, he said: “Daniel was an amazing young man. He was good at his studies. He was good at his sports. Very much loved by many, many people and came from a wonderful family.

“The family are in shock. Obviously they are very heartbroken. He was such a young boy taken away from his family.

“It’s sad that it’s happened in a family, a community, like this. It’s heartbreaking.

“At least they got their time to spend with Daniel, 14 years. Their faith is sustaining them and we are all supporting them in any shape or form that they need.

“He was a joyful boy — he brought his family lots of joy and his life has just been taken away. Just walking out on his way to school. He was much loved, his family are much loved.

“I was talking to my son and he was so heartbroken, he can remember Daniel driving his little car and playing in the street.

“He said he can’t imagine it happening to his own brother.”

Another friend, Ade Caxton-Cole, who accompanied Janti, said: “They have hope and we have hope that we will all be seeing him one day so long as we have hope in Christ.”

Police attend ‘critical incident’ amid reports of stabbing near Hainault Tube station

A police officer nearly lost her hand in a horror sword attack which left a 14-year-old boy dead and four others in hospital, the Met Commissioner said.

Sir Mark Rowley described the officer’s injuries as “really horrifically serious”, with her arm left “really badly damaged” after the sword-wielding suspect launched a dawn rampage in Hainault, northeast London, on Tuesday.

“The surgeons spent many hours basically putting her arms back together,” Sir Mark told LBC. When asked if he could confirm reports she was close to actually losing her hand, the commissioner said: “That’s not a million miles away.”

Police were called shortly before 7am to reports of a vehicle being driven into a house in the Thurlow Gardens area of Hainault, with reports that people had been stabbed.

A 14-year-old boy died at the scene and four people were rushed to hospital with injuries believed not to be life-threatening.

Police are still waiting to question the 36-year-old suspect who was injured when his van collided with the property before the attack.

Neighbours horrified at schoolboy stabbing

Aiste Dabasinskaaite described the moment she saw a man fatally stab the teenager.

She said the man asked her for the address of the area they were in, then put his foot on her foot so she “couldn’t back off”.

She told ITV: “Once I told the address, he sort of moved closer towards me, he put his foot on my foot so I couldn’t back off and then that’s when he like drew out the sword.

“It was arm’s length. It was honestly petrifying. I just ran down the road, I didn’t even look back to see if he was chasing me.”

Ms Dabasinskaaite said she tried to warn the teenager, adding: “My instinct was to shout and wave at him, which is what me and another neighbour did but because he had just his headphones on I don’t think he heard either of us.

“It was sort of a moment where we just went from shouting to just blankness, just felt empty,” she added. “You wouldn’t think that would happen on your doorstep you know.”

Female police officer nearly lost her hand in knife attack, Met commissioner says

The female police officer who was wounded in the horrific knife attack in east London yesterday was close to losing her hand altogether, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner has said.

Speaking to Nick Ferrari on LBC this morning, Sir Mark Rowley described her injuries as “horrifically serious”, with her arm left “really badly damaged” after a sword-wielding man launched a dawn rampage in a suburban street in Hainault shortly before 7am.

She was one of two police officers who underwent surgery for serious wounds after they tried to stop the apparently random attack, while two members of the public also remain in hospital. None of their injuries are thought to be life-threatening.

Sir Mark said he visited his officers in hospital yesterday, speaking with them, and their friends, family and colleagues.

He said of the female police officer: “The surgeons spent many hours basically putting her arm back together.” When asked by Mr Ferrari if he could confirm reports she was close to actually losing her hand, the commissioner said: “That’s not a million miles away.”

When it came to the male inspector whose hand was also left “badly damaged”, Sir Mark said: “He’s got a lot of patching up to be done in his hand – really serious injuries there.”

A 36-year-old suspect was cornered by officers and tasered before being arrested on suspicion of murder.

The commissioner said: "For the parents involved, who’ve lost their 14-year-old, that is just horrific, and it’s everyone’s worst nightmare. I’m sure we’re all thinking about them.

"We were on the ground in 12 minutes, and he was detained after 22 minutes. Obviously some of the first contacts led to officers being very severely injured."

Describing how he finds his officers “humbling”, the commissioner said: “They will run towards danger – but that is not a glib phrase, that’s real. They’re charging towards somebody with a sword, putting themselves at risk because they’re so connected to the idea that it’s their job to protect the public. They do that day in, day out.”

First failed asylum seeker sent to Rwanda under voluntary scheme - BBC

Rwandan capital KigaliGetty Images

The UK has returned a first failed asylum seeker to Rwanda under a voluntary removals programme, it is understood.

Under the scheme, announced last month, migrants whose claims are rejected are offered up to £3,000 to move to the east African country.

It is separate to the forced returns scheme the government announced two years ago.

That scheme, which has been beset by delays, is due to begin by mid-July.

The Sun, which first reported the story, said the unnamed man was flown out of the UK on Monday on a commercial flight.

Officials would not be drawn on any details, other than to say the asylum seeker had exhausted all rights to be in the UK.

The Rwandan government confirmed that a failed asylum seeker arrived on Tuesday on a flight from London.

Labour said the move showed ministers were "desperate" to get a flight off to Rwanda before Thursday's local elections in England.

The scheme announced in March is understood to be a variation of an existing voluntary returns scheme for failed asylum seekers.

The scheme will also be opened up to other people with no right to remain in the UK, and foreign criminals.

The Home Office says payments under the current scheme "can pay for" temporary accommodation in the destination country, or education costs, or the cost of setting up a business.

Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch suggested the fact someone had volunteered to go to Rwanda undermined the argument that it was not a safe country.

In response to criticism of the £3,000 paid for relocation, she told Sky News there was no "cost-free option" for border control.

According to official statistics, 19,253 people with no right to remain in the UK were voluntarily removed from the UK last year.

Of these, 3,319 received a "reintegration package" or flights paid by the Home Office.

Jacqueline McKenzie, partner and head of immigration at Leigh Day solicitors, said she was aware from contacts that many people had recently been offered this package to go to Rwanda, including some very vulnerable individuals.

"I am surprised, given the amount of calls that have been made, that more people haven't gone, if it's a good idea," she told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

Shadow foreign secretary Yvette Cooper called news of the voluntary return a "pre-election gimmick," adding taxpayers were "forking out £3,000 for a volunteer to board a plane".

"The Tories are so desperate to get any flight off to Rwanda before the local elections that they have now just paid someone to go," she added.

It comes after the Home Office confirmed Rwanda had agreed to accept an initial cohort of 5,700 asylum seekers under the separate forced returns scheme.

The scheme - which the government argues will deter future migrants from crossing the English Channel in small boats - has been dogged by legal delays.

However, it is finally set to begin in the summer, after legislation to override a Supreme Court ruling entered into force earlier this month.

The Home Office has said 2,143 asylum seekers can immediately be located for detention in the run-up to their flights, as they are reporting to the department.

It has denied losing track of the remaining 3,557, who are subject to a range of different monitoring requirements.

Downing Street insisted on Tuesday it remained confident of their whereabouts, after the figures became public as part of a policy document.

However, a government source admitted it was possible some could abscond before they were detained.
