Sunak under pressure to say how many times he has met Tory donor Frank Hester - The Guardian

Rishi Sunak is facing calls to say how many times he has met the Conservative mega-donor Frank Hester, who made comments about Diane Abbott that have been widely condemned for being racist and misogynistic, after a picture of the pair at a Tory fundraiser emerged.

Hester is understood to have attended two Tory fundraisers in the last year, in June where he was photographed with Sunak, and as recently as two weeks ago at Raffles in London.

The prime minister is also believed to have met Hester in Leeds, the day after the autumn statement in November, when the donor paid £16,000 for Sunak to take a helicopter to the city for a political visit.

No 10 has said it “will not get into details” about whether the two men had a meeting during that trip. On that day, Sunak was pictured hammering jewellery at a workshop in Farsley in north-west Leeds, less than 4 miles from the HQ of Hester’s company TPP.

Downing Street is also refusing to give details of any discussions about AI between Sunak and Hester, who has given £10m to the party and will potentially contribute another £5m – taking his contributions in less than a year close to what the Conservatives spent on the entire 2019 general election.

Hester, who has worked on artificial intelligence as part of his IT business, has previously said he has had “some quite long conversations with Rishi about AI”. The donor also attended an event at Lancaster House where Sunak discussed AI with the billionaire Elon Musk in November.

It is unknown whether any discussions about policy were reported back to Sunak’s department.

Anneliese Dodds, Labour’s chair, said: “Rishi Sunak needs to come clean about the relationship he has with Frank Hester, including how many times he has met with him since becoming prime minister.”

Hester’s meetings with Sunak are the latest in more than a decade of meetings with senior Conservative politicians.

As prime minister, David Cameron took Hester on a delegation to India in February 2013. Hester returned to India with Ken Clarke in May 2013. Jeremy Hunt, then health secretary, visited TPP’s offices in December 2014. Cameron held a rally at TPP’s headquarters in April 2015 during the general election campaign.

The then chancellor, George Osborne, brought Hester on a trade mission to China in September 2015 to herald the “Northern Powerhouse”. In January 2016, Hunt returned to TPP’s newly constructed headquarters.

At the Commonwealth heads of government meeting in Kigali in June 2022, Hester met Boris Johnson.

The Conservatives and Downing Street have not denied that Hester has sought to donate an additional £5m, on top of the £10m already formally declared through the Electoral Commission.

According to GB News, the money has been “in the ether for ages” but has yet to be formally confirmed. One unnamed party source told the channel: “He wants to give again. I hope he will.”

The Conservatives are expected to be heavily reliant on paid-for campaigning such as mailed leaflets and digital ads in the general election, in part because of a lack of numbers and enthusiasm in their campaign base.

In 2019, the Tories spent just under £16.5m from a permitted total of close to £19m. However, the spending limits have since been raised, and for Labour and the Conservatives – it is based on the number of candidates fielded – it will be around £34m.

Hester has been at the centre of a political furore since the Guardian reported on Monday that he said in a 2019 meeting that seeing Abbott, who is Britain’s longest-serving black MP, on TV made “you just want to hate all black women because she’s there”.

He also called all his “foreign” workers together to defend himself against online claims he had made racist remarks. During this meeting, he said he abhorred racism and told his team their progress would not be “based on the colour of your skin, your ethnicity, where your parents are from”.

However, he also said: “We take the piss out of the fact that all our Chinese girls sit together in Asian corner.”

After the report, Hester released a statement saying he “accepts that he was rude about Diane Abbott in a private meeting several years ago but his criticism had nothing to do with her gender nor colour of skin”. The statement said Hester abhorred racism, “not least because he experienced it as the child of Irish immigrants in the 1970s”.

The statement added: “He rang Diane Abbott twice today to try to apologise directly for the hurt he has caused her, and is deeply sorry for his remarks. He wishes to make it clear that he regards racism as a poison which has no place in public life.”

Manhunt after two separate 'crossbow attacks' in east London believed to be linked - Sky News

A manhunt is under way after two suspected crossbow attacks in east London, which police believe are linked.

A 44-year-old woman is said to have been hit in the head with a crossbow bolt as she crossed the road by Clifton House in Shoreditch at about 7.44pm on Monday 4 March.

Then, on Thursday 14 March, a 20-year-old man was injured in the neck by a crossbow bolt near Arnold Circus, about 60 metres from the scene of the first attack, at about 7.27pm.

Both have since left hospital and are not thought to have life-changing injuries, police said, while no similar incidents have been reported.

Officers are carrying out "urgent work" to identify a suspect, and extra officers will be deployed to the area over the weekend to "provide reassurance".

Detective chief superintendent James Conway said his team is trying to identify witnesses, study CCTV footage and will keep the community "updated".

"You may have seen something on the days when these offences occurred, or you might have seen or heard something in the local area that you think is suspicious and may be linked to these incidents," he added, calling for the public's help.

"If you do have any information please come forward and speak to us. You can either speak with a police officer, or call us on 101.

"I understand that local people will be distressed by these incidents but we would urge them to go about their business.

"Please do be vigilant and alert while our investigation is ongoing and contact us about anything which seems concerning."

Wales' first minister: Labour leader to be announced - BBC

Jeremy Miles and Vaughan GethingWelsh government/BBC

The winner of the Welsh Labour leadership election - and the man set to become Wales' new first minister - will be announced later on Saturday.

Vaughan Gething and Jeremy Miles have been competing to replace Mark Drakeford, who stands down next week.

Labour Party officials will declare the result of the election in Cardiff.

Mr Gething would become Wales' first black first minister, while Mr Miles would be the country's first gay leader.

But the winning candidate will not become first minister until the procedure for replacing Mr Drakeford takes place next week.

Any member of the party in Wales or organisations affiliated to Labour, such as trade unions, was able to vote.

The party does not reveal how many people are members of Welsh Labour, but sources put it at about 16,000.

There were thought to be about 100,000 people with an affiliate vote, although only a small proportion of those were expected to take part.

Members were able to vote in the ballot by post or online between 16 February and 14 March.

Mr Gething, Wales' economy minister and a former solicitor, was born in Zambia.

His father, a vet from Ogmore-by-Sea in Vale of Glamorgan, met his mother, a chicken farmer, while working in the southern African country.

Mr Gething went to school in Dorset, university in Aberystwyth and Cardiff. He came second to Mr Drakeford in the previous Welsh Labour leadership election in 2018.

Wales' Education Minister Mr Miles, who also used to be a solicitor, was born and brought up in the mining town of Pontarddulais as a first-language Welsh speaker.

He was schooled in Ysgol Ystalyfera in Swansea valley during the 1980s, alongside many children whose fathers were part of the miners' strike.

Mr Drakeford is expected to face his final First Minister's Questions on Tuesday afternoon and later inform Buckingham Palace of his resignation.

Mr Gething or Mr Miles is expected to be nominated in the Senedd to be Wales' new first minister the following day, with the possibility of a roll-call vote in the Senedd if opposition parties decide to put their own leaders up for the job.

Labour holds 30 of the 60 seats in Cardiff Bay, so is unlikely to have difficulty ensuring its new leader becomes the next first minister.

They will become the fifth leader of Wales' devolved government since powers over matters such as education, health, social services and local government were transferred in 1999.

Mr Miles or Mr Gething will follow in the footsteps of Alun Michael, Rhodri Morgan, Carwyn Jones and Mr Drakeford.

They will also play an important role in Labour's campaign in Wales for the upcoming UK general election.

Man found guilty of raping girl, 15, in sea off Bournemouth beach - The Guardian

A 20-year-old man has been found guilty of the “brazen” rape of a 15-year-old girl after he took her out of her depth in the sea off Bournemouth beach.

A jury found Gabriel Marinoaica, of Darlaston, Walsall, guilty of three charges of sexual assault and rape. He was acquitted of a further charge of sexual assault by biting her neck.

Judge Susan Evans KC said it was a “brazen thing to have done in broad daylight” on the beach.

“I am afraid I cannot grant you bail but I order a pre-sentence report, the only outcome is custody in any event.”

Ellie Fargin, prosecuting, told the trial at Bournemouth crown court that the victim, who could not swim, had been in the sea off the Dorset resort on Sunday 18 July 2021 with friends when she started playing a ballgame with another group in the water.

The girl continued playing with the ball after her two friends had returned to the beach. She had gone to get the ball after it had been kicked away and had been picked up by Marinoaica, Fargin said.

Marinoaica asked her name and age before saying his name was Dabby and he was from Birmingham, Fargin continued. He then “pulled at [her] arm and pulled her out to sea”.

“[She] could no longer touch the bottom, she really was in deep water. [She] told the defendant: ‘No, get off me,’ but he ignored her.

“He was touching her everywhere, she was uncomfortable and wanted to get out [of the sea] but the defendant pulled her out further.”

She said the defendant then asked her if she wanted to “smash” – a colloquial term for sex – which the complainant said she did not want to.

Fargin said the defendant then groped the girl and kissed her before he raped her for about a minute until someone approached the pair. She had said she could not scream because Marinoaica had his hand over her mouth.

He claimed she had initiated sexual activity and asked him if he wanted to have sex.

“He took her out of her depth, he made her vulnerable, she couldn’t even swim, he might not have known that but he might have known she could not touch the bottom.

“And why did he do that? So he could do what he wanted to do. She didn’t consent, and we say he knew that – he simply didn’t care,” Fargin said.

Marinoaica was arrested 11 months later after his DNA was found in the complainant’s bikini, jurors were told.

Marinoaica was remanded in custody to be sentenced on 19 April.

Rishi Sunak rules out holding general election on 2 May - The Guardian

Rishi Sunak has ruled out holding a general election on 2 May, when voters are to go to the polls in local elections.

Asked by ITV News West Country whether he was preparing to call a snap election to coincide with the local elections, the prime minister said: “There won’t be a general election on that day.”

There had been feverish speculation in Westminster that Sunak was preparing to dissolve parliament before the end of March and announce a general election for 2 May.

Before this week Sunak repeatedly refused to rule out the possibility, even though he said in January his “working assumption” was there would be an election in the second half of the year.

He said on Thursday: “In several weeks’ time we’ve got elections for police and crime commissioners, for local councils, for mayors across the country – they’re important elections.”

Asked whether there would be a general election on the same day, he said: “There won’t be an election on that day.”

He did not rule out an early election in the spring or summer more broadly. Labour has talked up the prospect of a snap election this spring. Jonathan Ashworth, the shadow paymaster general, made a £10 bet live on Sky News that the election would take place in May.

Some Labour and Conservative figures think an early election would largely avoid fallout from a potentially bruising set of local elections and a difficult summer when small boat crossings across the Channel could damage the Tories’ record on immigration further.

Isaac Levido, who is running the Conservatives’ election campaign, wants it to be focused on the government’s record of delivery. Tory strategists believe that by waiting until later in the year Sunak will have more to show from his time in No 10 and the economic picture will have improved.

Pat McFadden MP, Labour’s national campaign coordinator, said: “After 14 years of Tory failure, the British public have the right to expect an election to be called by 26 March and held on 2 May.

“Until the day to call it has passed, we are prepared for the election to take place on the usual day in the election cycle. Rishi Sunak should stop squatting in Downing Street and give the country what it desperately needs – a chance for change with a Labour government.”

The latest Sunak could wait to hold the election is January 2025. Insiders think Labour is talking up the prospect of an earlier election so as to accuse Sunak of cowardice should he decide against one.

This month Keir Starmer urged Sunak to call the election for 2 May. Responding to the budget, the Labour leader said: “It is time to break the habit of 14 years. Stop the dithering, stop the delay, stop the uncertainty and confirm 2 May as the date of the next general election. Because Britain deserves better and Labour are ready.”

When asked earlier on Thursday about the date of the election, the prime minister told reporters: “I said at the start of this year, my working assumption was we’d have an election in the second half of this year. And nothing has changed since I said that.”

Pressure on Starmer as Rayner says she wants Diane Abbott back as a Labour MP - The Independent

Labour leader Keir Starmer is under growing pressure after his deputy Angela Rayner said she would like to see Diane Abbott back in the party.

Ms Rayner also condemned as “absolutely chilling” alleged comments by top Tory donor Frank Hester that Ms Abbott made him “want to hate all Black women” and that she should be “shot”.

She said: “Personally I would like to see Diane back. But the Labour Party has to follow its procedures… so it does not matter what I think.”

Her comments came as Labour veteran Harriet Harman called for the investigation into Ms Abbott’s suspension to be sped up, admitting that the processes can sometimes be slow.

The comments expose a split at the very top of the Labour Party and will pile pressure on Sir Keir, who has so far resisted calls to restore the whip to Ms Abbott.

Earlier, Sir Keir said Ms Abbott, who has this week been at the centre of a Conservative Party race row, needed “an arm around her” but described her suspension as a “completely different” issue and one that was “subject to an ongoing investigation”.

Deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner said she wanted to see Diane Abbott back as a Labour MP

The longtime MP was suspended from Labour last year after she suggested Jewish, Irish and Traveller people are not subject to the same racism as some other minorities.

The MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, who served in Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet alongside Ms Rayner, apologised “unreservedly”.

But Sir Keir would not be drawn on whether or not Ms Abbott, who currently sits as an independent, could expect to become a Labour MP again, saying the 11-month investigation into her alleged antisemitic remarks was “not resolved”.

The Labour leader said the longest-serving black MP was a “trailblazer” and described the language allegedly used by Mr Hester as “abhorrent”.

But he told BBC Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine that allowing the MP back into the party was an “entirely different issue”.

He added: “That was about allegations of antisemitism in relation to a letter… which is subject to an ongoing investigation, which is separate from me. That’s not something which I conduct.”

Ms Rayner said she sometimes felt “frustration” over how long processes can take, but added: “In (some) instances there are sensitive reasons for that.”

Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said she was also frustrated with how long the investigation into Ms Abbott was taking. She said it was an independent process in which she had no direct role, but she told BBC Radio 4’s PM programme that: “I think everybody wants to see that speeded up.”

Diane Abbott pictured with Rayner while in Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet

The comments come a day after Ms Abbott hit out at the Conservatives and Labour, accusing both parties of “shocking” racism in the Tory donor scandal.

Rishi Sunak has refused to hand back a £10m donation from Mr Hester, a wealthy businessman.

The prime minister has defended keeping the cash and argued that the healthcare tech entrepreneur’s apology should be accepted.

Speaking at a lunch with Westminster, Ms Rayner also said major Labour donor Dale Vince should “reflect” on his “appalling” remarks about Hamas.

He told Times Radio last year that “one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter” when asked about the Palestinian militant group that carried out the 7 October attacks, in which 1,200 people were killed.

At an event in Westminster, Ms Rayner was asked if she thought the comments had been appropriate. She said: “In that context, I think it is appalling and I don’t think he should have said it.

“And I think he should reflect on that. Language is important.”
