Labour calls on Sunak to return Frank Hester's £10m Tory donation - The Guardian

Labour has written to Rishi Sunak calling for him to hand back £10m in donations from the Conservatives’ biggest ever donor, after it emerged he told colleagues that looking at Diane Abbott made you “want to hate all black women” and said the MP “should be shot”.

Anneliese Dodds, the chair of the Labour party, wrote to the prime minister calling for the money to be returned after the Guardian published details of Frank Hester’s remarks from a meeting held at his company, TPP, in 2019.

The businessman, who has given £10m to the Tories in the past year, said in the meeting that he did not hate all black women. But he also said that seeing Abbott, who is Britain’s longest-serving black MP, on TV meant “you just want to hate all black women because she’s there”.

TPP’s lawyers, Carter-Ruck, said the comments were not a true or accurate characterisation of the company or Hester.

In a new statement on Monday night, a spokesperson for Hester said he “accepts that he was rude about Diane Abbott in a private meeting several years ago but his criticism had nothing to do with her gender nor colour of skin.

“The Guardian is right when it quotes Frank saying he abhors racism, not least because he experienced it as the child of Irish immigrants in the 1970s. He rang Diane Abbott twice today to try to apologise directly for the hurt he has caused her, and is deeply sorry for his remarks. He wishes to make it clear that he regards racism as a poison which has no place in public life.”

In parliament on Monday, Wes Streeting, the shadow health secretary, said Hester had used “utterly revolting, racist and inciteful language”, adding that “it has no place in our politics and public life”.

In her letter to the prime minister, Dodds said the Conservatives should hand back the £10m as well as the value of a helicopter ride to the tune of £15,900 provided to Sunak by Hester.

She wrote: “While – in good faith – we assume that your party was not aware of Mr Hester’s views at the time of receiving these donations, it is only right that you and your party take these new revelations into account seriously.

“Accepting and using that money can only be treated as implicitly condoning and overlooking his deeply disturbing comments and the way he has run his business. Anything less than returning the money will be a stain on the Conservative party.”

She also highlighted that, in February, Hester had spoken about his access to Sunak, claiming that “I’ve had some quite long conversations with Rishi about AI”.

Hester’s remarks were criticised by some Conservatives. Sir Bob Neill, the Conservative MP and chair of the justice committee, told Times Radio: “It’s a stupid and offensive thing to say ... That’s not the sort of language that you should use about anyone that, frankly.”

Alistair Burt, the former Conservative minister, said: “If true, and it appears to be, it is open and shut for the Conservative party. Return the donations, end the relationship and ask decent donors to make up the difference. With MPs under threat, and past murders, this is unacceptable. Many Conservative members will be watching.”

The Liberal Democrats also called for Sunak to rule out giving a peerage to Hester, as well as handing the donations back.

Wendy Chamberlain, the Liberal Democrat chief whip, said: “These comments are inexcusable and disgusting. Ultimately the buck stops with Rishi Sunak.

“He must reassure the public that the Conservative party does not tolerate these remarks. That means confirming that his party will return every penny of these donations and won’t take any more from this donor in future. He must also rule out any future peerage for Frank Hester.”

Hester gave £5m to the Conservatives in May 2023 and announced a further £5m donation this month, which had been accepted by the party from his company in November last year. With months to go before the next general election, a party spokesperson confirmed he was now its “biggest ever donor”.

The Conservatives told LBC: “Mr Hester has made clear that while he was rude, his criticism had nothing to do with her gender nor the colour of her skin. He has since apologised.”

Lee Anderson, UK lawmaker dropped by Sunak, defects to right-wing party - Al Jazeera English

Anderson was suspended from the Conservative Party over accusations of Islamophobia.

A prominent former deputy chairman of Britain’s governing Conservatives, who was suspended from the party over accusations of Islamophobia, has defected to the small right-wing Reform UK party in a setback for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The move on Monday by Lee Anderson, a former miner who has courted controversy with his outspoken views, comes months before a national election in which Reform is expected to draw votes away from the Conservatives and in doing so threaten Sunak’s re-election bid.

Anderson’s defection to Reform, which has Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage as its honorary president and backs populist causes such as tougher immigration laws, gives the party its first member of parliament.

It also represents a blow to Sunak, given Anderson was appointed as the Conservatives’ deputy chairman last year to appeal to voters in former Labour Party-voting heartlands known as the “Red Wall”, which backed the Conservatives at the last election.

The New Conservatives, a group of MPs on the right of the Tory party who have rebelled against Sunak, said the Conservative Party was responsible for Anderson’s defection.

“We cannot pretend any longer that ‘the plan is working’. We need to change course urgently,” the group said in a statement.

“I want my country back. … We are allowing people into our country that will never integrate and adopt our British values,” Anderson said at a press conference alongside Reform leader Richard Tice, who predicted more lawmakers would join Reform.

“Reform UK has offered me the chance to speak out in parliament on behalf of millions of people up and down the country who feel that they’re not being listened to.”

Last month the Conservatives suspended Anderson after he refused to apologise for saying London’s first Muslim mayor, Sadiq Khan, was under the control of “Islamists”.

While the Labour Party of opposition leader Keir Starmer is Sunak’s biggest election rival, Reform could win over some traditionally Conservative-leaning voters.

Last month, Reform achieved its best result in one-off parliamentary contests known as by-elections, taking 13 percent of the vote in a constituency in central England, once considered a safe Conservative seat.

The party, founded in 2018 as the Brexit Party, has ruled out making any pre-election deals with the Conservatives.

The Conservatives said the party regretted Anderson’s move.

“Voting for Reform can’t deliver anything apart from a Keir Starmer-led Labour government that would take us back to square one – which means higher taxes, higher energy costs, no action on Channel crossings and uncontrolled immigration,” a Conservative spokesperson said.

Anderson quit his post as one of Conservative Party’s deputy chairmen in January to vote for amendments to toughen up immigration legislation that would revive the government’s plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.

The 57-year-old supports the return of capital punishment, wants asylum seekers to be immediately returned to their countries of origin and earned the nickname “30p Lee” after claiming that decent meals could be made for 30 pence (38 US cents).

The row over Anderson’s comments about London’s mayor came at a sensitive time in British politics as Israel’s war on Gaza exacerbates tensions in Jewish and Muslim communities that have spilled into parliament.

Princess of Wales: Kate photo withdrawn by four news agencies amid 'manipulation' concerns - BBC

Catherine with Prince Louis, Princess Charlotte and Prince GeorgePrince of Wales

Four international photo agencies have retracted a picture of the Princess of Wales and her children over concerns it has been "manipulated".

The image, taken by Prince William for Mother's Day, was the first of Catherine to be released by Kensington Palace since her surgery in January.

But, Getty Images, AFP, Reuters and Associated Press have pulled the photo - noting an "inconsistency in alignment of Princess Charlotte's left hand".

Kensington Palace declined to comment.

The photo shows the princess sitting down, surrounded by Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis and Prince George, the latter wrapping his arms around her.

It was the first official photo of the Princess of Wales since her abdominal surgery two months ago. Since then she has stayed out of the public eye.

The image was posted on the Prince and Princess of Wales's social media accounts with a message from Catherine which said: "Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months.

"Wishing everyone a Happy Mother's Day."

It has become a regular routine for the royal couple to release their own photos of special family occasions. More often than not, the photos are taken by Catherine and are issued to the media with instructions on how they can be used.

But, before Prince William's image of his family was posted online, it would have gone through the social media team at Kensington Palace who manage the online accounts of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

It may well have been that some editing was done on the original photo which has now resulted in the discrepancies in its appearance.

The implication here is not that the entire photo is a fake or that the Princess of Wales is more unwell than she appears in the image. That seems unlikely and would be a very high-risk strategy from the Kensington Palace team.

The Mother's Day image was included on the front pages of several national newspapers and websites, including BBC News, and used on TV news bulletins - again including the BBC.

In order to use the new photo as quickly as possible the BBC took the one used by Kensington Palace on their social media accounts.

But, late on Sunday, the Associated Press, one of many international agencies that distributed the photo, issued a "kill notification" - an industry term used to make a retraction.

It said: "At closer inspection it appears that the source has manipulated the image. No replacement photo will be sent."

A second news agency, Reuters, said it too had withdrawn the image "following a post-publication review". This was followed by a third agency, AFP, which also issued a "mandatory kill notice".

Getty Images became the fourth organisation to retract the photograph.

PA Media, the UK's biggest news agency - through which the Royal Family regularly releases its official information, including to the BBC - said it had not killed the picture on its service.

But, a spokesman said the agency was seeking urgent clarification from Kensington Palace over the concerns raised about manipulation.

Most news organisations follow their own strict guidelines on the use of manipulated photographs, only using them when accompanied by an explanation that the image has been changed from the original.

News agencies, such as AP, therefore make a commitment to their clients that their photos are accurate and not digitally manipulated.

AP's rules only allow "minor adjustments" in certain circumstances, including cropping and toning and colour adjustments, as well as the removal of dust on camera sensors. It says changes in density, contrast, colour and saturation levels "that substantially alter the original scene" are not acceptable.

Social media platform X has posted its own disclaimer on the Prince and Princess of Wales's official account saying the image is "believed to be digitally altered".

At this stage, the more likely explanation is that some overzealous editing of the picture to get it ready for publication has actually cast doubt on its authenticity.

The photo, designed to cool the conversation around the Princess of Wales's recovery, has instead heated all the rumours up again.

Catherine, 42, spent 13 nights at the London Clinic, near Regent's Park in central London, following the surgery.

Prince William visited his wife during her stay and she was visited by the King before he had his own treatment there.

The Palace has shared few details about her condition, which has garnered significant social media speculation, but has said it is not cancer-related.

The team supporting the princess as she recovers is small and limited to those closest to her.

At the time of her stay, the Palace said the princess wanted her personal medical information to remain private, adding that she wanted to "maintain as much normality for her children as possible".

The Palace said it would only provide updates on her recovery when there was significant new information to share.

It was thought on Sunday morning the photo would quell some of the more extreme theories around the princess's absence from the public stage. But within hours social media was abuzz with zoomed-in images of Princess Charlotte's left cuff and Prince Louis' fingers.

Officer's four word lie after she was spotted inhaling balloons as partner sniffed 'cocaine' - Liverpool Echo

A Merseyside Police officer claimed "I swear to you I haven't done anything" when confronted after inhaling balloons while her former girlfriend sniffed "cocaine".

Former Constable Ellie Butlin was viewed on CCTV parked at Broughton Retail Park at around 8.30pm on August 6 2023. The officer, who was off duty at the time, was with her former girlfriend who was caught on CCTV snorting a white powder, believed to be cocaine, off the back of her hand.

The ex-girlfriend was then observed handing two balloons to Constable Butlin, who put them in her mouth. The CCTV then showed the balloons inflating and deflating as she inhaled gas from the inside. Constable Butlin and her former partner were approached by a police officer who questioned them about what they were doing in the car park.

But instead of coming clean and admitting what was happening. Constable Butlin repeatedly lied to the officer, telling him "I swear to you I haven't done anything". At an accelerated misconduct hearing held last week, Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said: "The former officer's actions and statements were deliberate steps to cover up what happened in the car."

The hearing, held at Merseyside Police HQ in Rose Hill on Cazneau Street, Everton, heard the then serving officer was approached by North Wales Police Constable Hughes, who questioned them about what they were doing in the car park. Constable Hughes asked the now former Constable Butlin if she was the owner of the car, to which she replied "I am".

The officer questioned the women about what they were doing, to which the unnamed former partner responded "they're mine, they're just balloons, they're just whips". Constable Hughes asked Constable Butlin what she was doing, with her replying "no nothing, honestly". Constable Butlin was told she had been observed on CCTV inhaling from a balloon.

However, she continued to deny her involvement and told the officer "I honestly, I swear to you I haven't done anything" and "I haven't done anything". She was interviewed on October 18 last year where she admitted the allegations and was told her failure to challenge or report the incident brought the police force into disrepute.

Constable Butlin was told: "In that witnessing a person taking what you believe to be an illegal drug and failing in any way to challenge that behaviour or otherwise report it, you have acted in a way that has the propensity to bring the police service into disrepute.

"In that in responding to a police officer acting in the execution of his duty, you did not provide a full account and your responses 'no nothing, honestly,' 'I honestly, I swear to you I haven't done anything, honestly' and 'I haven't done anything' were untruthful and therefore dishonest. In any event your response to the officer as a whole lacked integrity as you did not provide a whole account of your actions to the officer."

Detective Superintendent Cheryl Rhodes, who told the hearing the allegations reached the threshold for gross misconduct, said "Butlin should have known better" and due to her actions she was "unsuitable to be an officer". She told the hearing: "The evidence reflects badly on Butlin and could reflect badly on the entire police force, particularly if she would remain in her role."

She added: "Her actions plainly amount to gross misconduct. Constable Butlin was contacted ahead of the hearing and asked if she accepted her actions amounted to gross misconduct. The hearing heard she did not respond and instead handed in her resignation.

Also present at the hearing was Inspector Paula Oldham, her Merseyside Police Federation representative. However, Inspector Oldham told the hearing there would be no representation from Constable Butlin.

Chief Constable Kennedy determined that Constable Butlin had "turned a blind eye to drug use and lied about it". She said: "Her "culpability was high as she didn't take positive action and allowed it to happen in front of her.

"She can't blame anyone else, she was the one who lied. She lied to four questions from Constable Hughes. The former officer's actions and statements were deliberate steps to cover up what happened in the car."

Chief Constable Kennedy added: "The community of Merseyside should have trust and confidence that the officers who uphold the law also abide to the law. I have been very clear that public trust is my number one priority and the actions of the officer erodes that confidence."

The Chief Constable found the officer's actions did amount to gross misconduct and said she would have been immediately dismissed from the police force without notice. However, the now former Constable Butlin resigned before she was sacked.

Following the hearing, Detective Superintendent Rhodes said: "Police officers are expected to behave in an exemplary manner at all times, whether on or off duty, and when they witness illegal activity they are duty bound to report it.

“When they fail in their duties or choose to act in a manner which could bring the police service into disrepute then it is only right that action is taken.

“The public rightly expect those who work for Merseyside Police to be beyond reproach, and I hope that by showing we are taking positive action shows how seriously we take matters such as this.

“I also hope that the actions on one person does not undo the excellent work and commitment show by the vast majority of our officers and staff who work to serve and protect the communities of Merseyside every day.”

Two people have been arrested and 34 bodies removed from a funeral directors in Hull which police are investigating.

A man of 46 and woman of 23 were arrested on suspicion of prevention of a lawful and decent burial, fraud by false representation and fraud by abuse of position, Humberside Police said.

Police said the deceased had now been transported from one of Legacy Funeral Directors' branches to a Hull mortuary.

A cordon remains in place at all three premises.

Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin said: "As part of our investigation, as of today we can confirm 34 deceased people have now been respectfully transported from Legacy Funeral Directors based on Hessle Road to the mortuary in Hull for formal identification procedures to take place."

He added that affected families continued to be supported by family liaison officers and that the thoughts of Humberside Police were with them, particularly on Mother's Day.

A dedicated phone line remains open and has received more than 350 calls from members of the public since Friday, police added.

"Each call we receive is being carefully handled and delicately assessed by a specialist team to ensure we have a thorough understanding of each family's circumstances," ACC McLoughlin said.

"We will get back to each and every one of you as soon as we can.

"Please be reassured that my staff and officers are working around the clock to deal with the unprecedented enquiries generated as a result of this incident."

Humberside Police said it had received a report on Wednesday of "concern for care of the deceased".

Legacy Funeral Directors has branches in Hessle Road and Anlaby Road, both in Hull, as well as Beckside in Beverley.

A man who was arrested by armed police after crashing a car into the gates of Buckingham Palace has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning when a vehicle was driven into the front gates, causing significant damage.

Armed officers were quickly on the scene and the man was arrested before being taken to hospital.

There were no other injuries and the Metropolitan Police initially said they were seeking to establish the circumstances.

But in an update on Sunday afternoon, Scotland Yard said the man had been released on police bail and sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Police also confirmed that the incident was not being treated as terror-related.

The damage to the ornate gates was visible, with large wooden planks erected across the damaged area.

A Met spokesman said: “At around 02.35hrs on Saturday, 9 March a car collided with the gates of Buckingham Palace.

“Armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage. He was taken to hospital where following assessment he was sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
