Brianna Ghey killer Scarlett Jenkinson's family breaks silence - live - The Independent

Brianna Ghey's killers sentenced to 22 and 20 years in prison for teen's murder

The family of teenager killer Scarlett Jenkinson has broken their silence as they said they have been living out their “worst nightmares”.

Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe stabbed 16-year-old Brianna Ghey 28 times with a hunting knife in a horrific attack on 11 February last year after luring her to Linear Park near Warrington.

The judge at Manchester Crown Court said the “exceptionally brutal” murder had elements of sadism by Jenkinson and transphobic hate by Ratcliffe.

Saying their lives were “in turmoil”, Jenkinson’s family thanked Brianna‘s mother Esther Ghey for her “incredible selflessness and empathy towards our family”.

In a statement to the Warrington Guardian, Scarlett Jenkinson’s family said: “All of our thoughts are for Brianna and her family.

“The last 12 months have been beyond our worst nightmares as we have come to realise the brutal truth of Scarlett’s actions.”

The four-week trial heard the pair, who were 15, had a fascination with violence, torture and serial killers, with Jenkinson wanting to keep a part of Brianna’s flesh as a “token”.

Jenkinson was jailed for a minimum term of 22 years, and Ratcliffe 20.

Brianna Ghey: Why teenagers who killed schoolgirl can be named

Scarlett Jenkinson, Brianna’s school friend, was identified only as girl X during their trial last December at Manchester Crown Court. Ratcliffe, from Leigh, had been identified only as boy Y.

Both were named ahead of their sentencing on Friday.

Senior judge Mrs Justice Yip, had previously indicated she would lift a court order banning the press from identifying them.

The move bucks the norm of children appearing in youth or crown courts in England and Wales - whether as a victim, witness or defendant - generally not being identified.

Mrs Justice Yip ruled that the media could name the killers when they are sentenced after representations on behalf of the news outlets made by the Press Association and ITN.

Teachers were told only that Scarlett Jenkinson had been caught with cannabis edibles and was being given a “second chance”, an investigation has found.

The 13-year-old victim at Culcheth High School in Warrington, Cheshire, had fallen ill after Jenkinson gave her the sweet, and police were called in – but the victim’s parents did not want any further action.

Victim impact statements from Brianna’s familly

Victim impact statements from Brianna’s family were read out at the sentencing hearing in Manchester Crown Court on Friday.

Brianna’s stepfather Wesley Powell said the pair had taken advantage of her vulnerabilities and need for a close friend, acting as “two predators stalking their prey”.

“Brianna had a large online following but in reality she was lonely, vulnerable and in need of a close friend,” he said. “Both Eddie and Scarlett knew this and preyed upon her vulnerabilities, acting as two predators stalking their prey.”

In her statement, Brianna’s mother Esther Ghey said she had been pleased when Brianna told her she had gone to meet a friend on the day she died.

“I thought that she would have a wonderful time, hanging around with her friend and getting some fresh air,” she said. “When all that time she was being lured to her death.

“All I can think about is that she would have been scared and I wasn’t there for her. She needed me to protect her, Brianna wasn’t a fighter and she must have been so terrified.”

Brianna Ghey’s father says ‘evil monsters’ who killed daughter should be forgotten

Peter Spooner, disagreed with the judge’s decision to identify the teenage killers ahead of their sentencing on Friday as he fears their names will be “tied to Brianna’s all the time”.

“At first, I thought they should be named,” Brianna’s father told Sky News. “Why should they be protected? People should know who they are. Now, I think their names are always going to be tied to Brianna’s all the time,” he said. “I think they should just be forgotten about, locked up and not be spoken about again. They’re nothing.

“If I’m honest I hate them. They’re just evil for what they’ve done and I don’t think they’ll ever change. They’ll always be monsters. And that’s what they are to me.”

Clapham attack suspect Abdul Shokoor Ezedi last seen at King's Cross - BBC

The suspect in a corrosive-substance attack on a mother and her daughters was last seen on the London Underground at King's Cross, police say.

Abdul Shokoor Ezedi was last seen boarding a Victoria line train heading southbound at 21:00 GMT on Wednesday.

Detectives have released new images of the suspect inside the station about 90 minutes after the attack in Clapham, south London.

The mother, 31, remains "very poorly" with expected life-changing injuries.

Her daughters, aged three and eight, suffered injuries not "as serious as first thought" and "not likely to be life-changing".

Speaking at a news conference, Metropolitan Police Cdr Jon Savell called on Ezedi - who has very significant injuries to the right side of his face - to come forward.

"Abdul, you clearly have got some very significant injuries," Cdr Savell said.

"We've seen the images. You need some medical help, so do the right thing and hand yourself in."

He also revealed "significant and important pieces of evidence" were recovered following search warrants in east London and Newcastle on Thursday.

Two empty containers labelled with corrosive warnings were found at an address in Newcastle, and forensic tests are under way to determine if they held the substance used during the attack.

The wanted man left the Newcastle area in the early hours before travelling down to the capital, where the attack happened in Lessar Avenue, Clapham, at 19:25 on Wednesday.

The mother and her two girls were seriously hurt after the substance was thrown at them, according to initial details.

Three women and a man attempted to stop the attacker as he fled the scene. He tried to leave in a car, but he collided with a parked vehicle and then ran on foot towards Clapham Common.

Three members of the public, who came to the aid of the family, have all been discharged from hospital with minor burns.

Five officers who attended the attack were also treated and have now left hospital.

Ezedi was later seen at a Tesco in the King's Cross area before boarding a southbound Victoria Line tube from the area's underground station at 21:00 on Wednesday.

Map showing timeline of Ezidi's movements according to the Met Police

The latest update comes after it emerged Ezedi, who is believed to have travelled on a lorry from Afghanistan in 2016, was convicted of a sexual offence in 2018.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said he was sentenced on 9 January 2018 after pleading guilty to one charge of sexual assault and one of exposure.

He was given a suspended sentence at Newcastle Crown Court and put on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Ezedi was later granted asylum after two failed attempts. He was allowed to stay in the country after a priest confirmed he had converted to Christianity.

An asylum seeker can claim asylum in the UK if they fear religious persecution in their native country.

It is not yet known which Christian denomination supported Ezedi's claim.

The Catholic Church in the North East confirmed Ezedi was part of a justice and peace charitable project, but has yet to confirm whether he was helped in other ways.

The BBC has spoken to the owner of a supermarket in Byker, Newcastle, who said he saw Ezedi in his shop on Tuesday.

"He seemed normal and relaxed and in general was always respectful and polite. He worked six or seven days in a pizza shop behind the counter," the shop owner called Yaya said.

"I was shocked. He was working hard. In the two years I knew him he never drank.

"A few months ago he said he was working hard to go back to Afghanistan to get married to a woman and bring her back to the UK, because he was tired of being single."

Brianna Ghey's killers Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe jailed for life - live - The Independent

Brianna Ghey's killers sentenced to 22 and 20 years in prison for teen's murder

Two teenage killers have been jailed for life for the “frenzied and ferocious” murder of Brianna Ghey.

Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe stabbed the transgender 16-year-old 28 times with a hunting knife in a horrific attack on 11 February after luring her to Linear Park near Warrington.

Known as Girl X and Boy Y during their trial, they were named after Mrs Justice Yip ruled that their anonymity order could be lifted given the harrowing nature of their crimes.

Brianna Ghey: Moment Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe arrested for murder.

For the sadistic murder, Jenkinson has been jailed for a minimum term of 22 years, while Ratcliffe must serve 20 years.

A four-week trial at Manchester Crown Court heard that the pair had a fascination with violence, torture and serial killers, with Jenkinson wanting to keep a part of Brianna’s flesh as a “token”.

Both now aged 16 but 15 at the time, they had created a “kill list” of four other youths before Brianna unfortunately befriended Jenkinson in school and became the sole target.

Brianna’s mother, Esther Ghey, has said that she wanted the minimum terms her daughter’s “cowardly” killers must serve in custody to be “as long as possible”.

A fundraiser in memory of Brianna Ghey, which is raising money for the Mindfulness in Schools Project, has passed £50,000.

Brianna’s mother, Esther Ghey, said she had “decided to help make a difference to our society to reduce the risk of this happening again to another young person”.

The fundraising page says mindfulness techniques in schools “will allow children to process and deal with negative emotions in a healthy way - preventing mental health problems from developing in later life”.

Police say killers have shown ‘no remorse’ for the pain caused

Following the sentencing, DI Nige Parr said: “This has been a challenging and complex investigation from the very beginning and while I am pleased that the two responsible for Brianna’s brutal and senseless murder have been handed significant sentences, there is no escaping the tragedy in this case.

“Thankfully, Brianna’s family will finally see those responsible for her murder being punished for their part in this shocking crime.

“Jenkinson and Ratcliffe have shown absolutely no remorse for the pain they have caused, refusing to admit responsibility for their actions and selfishly subjected Brianna’s family, and their own families, to the ordeal of a trial.

“I would like to express my sincere condolences to Brianna’s family. They have shown an immense amount of courage and dignity throughout the investigation and the trial, and this has been an incredibly difficult experience for them. I hope that they can now in some way start to rebuild their lives after going through so much pain and grief.”

Killers made no visible reaction to prison sentences

Jenkinson made no reaction as she was told she must serve more than two decades behind bars.

She sat blinking occasionally as she was addressed by the judge and briefly asked a question of her intermediary, or approved adult, sat beside her in the dock.

Her mother, sat to her right in the public gallery, dabbed tears from her eyes with tissue.

Ratcliffe, also seated and looking directly in front of him, made no visible reaction as he was sentenced.

He was led down to the cells without looking over at his mother, who was sat to the left of the dock.

CPS believes killing was transphobic hate crime

The CPS has said it believes Brianna Ghey’s “brutal” and “heartless” murder was a hate crime driven by transphobia.

Speaking outside Manchester Crown Court on Friday, Nicola Wyn Williams, senior crown prosecutor for Mersey Cheshire, said the CPS is “pleased the court has agreed this was a motive”.

She said: “We applied to the judge for an increase in the defendants’ sentences because we believed this killing was a hate crime, motivated in part by hostility towards Brianna because she was transgender.

“We are pleased the court has agreed this was a motive.

Case was ‘one of the most disturbing cases the CPS have had to deal with’

Speaking outside the court, seniorcrown prosecutor Nicola Wyn Williams said: “At just 16, Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe are convicted killers, responsible for the brutal murder of a vulnerable young girl who thought they were her friends.

“They have been given a life term of imprisonment and have shown no remorse.

“The planning, violence and the age of the killers is beyond belief. The two appear to have had a deadly influence on each other and turned what may have started out as dark fantasies about murder into a reality.

“The messages between the two provided a terrifying insight into the warped desires and fantasies of the two defendants. However, they also provided us with the motivation behind the attack, the plans and then the attempts to cover it up.

“Today’s sentence reflects the brutality of the two killers’ heartless crime – and while it cannot erase the pain of Brianna’s loss, we hope it brings some closure.

“The Crown Prosecution Service would again like to thank Brianna’s family for the courage and dignity they have shown throughout the proceedings, and our thoughts and sympathies remain with them at this difficult time.”

Both killers participated in a ‘sadistic’ murder

Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe both took part in a “brutal, planned murder” which was “sadistic in nature,” the judge said.

Mrs Justice Yip said it is “plain this was murder of particularly high seriousness” and the part both teenagers played led to the starting point of 20 years.

She noted that it was motivated partly by hostility towards Brianna because of her transgender identity.

Justice Yip says she is also keeping in mind their young age, and told them they “must be sentenced with the hope, if not the immediate expectation, that you can one day be rehabilitated - however cruel that may seem to those who have lost a loved one”.

Greta Thunberg: Case thrown because of 'no evidence' - BBC

Greta Thunberg and four co-defendants have been found not guilty of breaking the law when they refused to follow police instructions to move on during a climate protest.

District Judge John Laws threw out a public order charge due to "no evidence" and added police attempted to impose "unlawful" conditions during a protest.

The 21-year-old campaigner was arrested at a climate change demonstration near the InterContinental Hotel in Mayfair on 17 October.

The judge said that the conditions imposed on protesters were "so unclear that it is unlawful".

He added that it meant that "anyone failing to comply were actually committing no offence".

'Civilised'

"It is quite striking to me that there were no witness statements taken from anyone in the hotel, approximately 1,000 people, or from anyone trying to get in," he said.

"There was no evidence of any vehicles being impeded, no evidence of any interference with emergency services, or any risk to life."

He said that the protest was "throughout peaceful, civilised and non-violent" and criticised evidence provided by the prosecution about the location of where the demonstrators should be moved to, saying the only helpful footage he received was "made by an abseiling protester".

'Law unclear'

The court heard that protesters started to gather near the hotel in October last year at around 07:30 and police engaged with them about improving access for members of the public, which the prosecution alleged had been made "impossible".

The judge rejected the submission as "the main entrance was accessible (meaning) that the condition... was unnecessary when the defendants were arrested".

Ms Thunberg appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court after previously denying breaching the Public Order Act 1986.

She is accused of breaching section 14 of the act by blocking the entrance to the hotel.

Ms Thunberg appeared at court along with two Fossil Free London protesters and two Greenpeace activists, who also pleaded not guilty to the same offence.

Oil executives had been meeting inside for the Energy Intelligence Forum.

Brianna Ghey's teenage killers Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe named by judge - The Independent

Two teenagers who brutally murdered Brianna Ghey have been named as they face life in prison for the frenzied killing.

Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe, both now aged 16 but 15 at the time, have been unmasked as the callous youths who stabbed 16-year-old Brianna to death and are now due to be sentenced on Friday.

The transgender teenager was stabbed with a hunting knife 28 times after being lured to Linear Park, Culcheth, a village near Warrington, Cheshire, on the afternoon of 11 February.

Scarlett Jenkinson

Eddie Ratcliffe

Jenkinson and Ratcliffe, previously identified only as girl X and boy Y, had denied murder and each attempted to blame the other for her killing, described as “horrific” by detectives.

A harrowing four-week trial at Manchester Crown Court heard the “warped” pair, whom Brianna believed to be her friends, had a fascination for violence, torture and murder – and had a “thirst for killing”.

At a hearing at the same court on 21 December, trial judge Mrs Justice Yip dealt with an application by the press to publish the defendants’ names, deciding in favour of lifting the anonymity orders that were previously in place due to the pair’s young age.

As the public “seek to understand how children could do something so dreadful”, she ruled: “There is a strong public interest in the full and unrestricted reporting of what is plainly an exceptional case.”

Brianna Ghey was stabbed with a hunting knife 28 times in her head, neck, chest and back

When the guilty verdicts were handed down the previous day, the judge made clear to the convicted pair that they both faced a mandatory life sentence for murder. Jenkinson and Ratcliffe, who have been held in secure youth detention, are now due to be sentenced on Friday.

Brianna’s mother, Esther Ghey, told ITV1’s Good Morning Britain last week that she wanted the minimum terms her daughter’s “cowardly” killers must serve in custody before they can be considered for release to be “as long as possible”.

Intelligent, coming from normal backgrounds, and never having been in trouble with police before, the trial, which began on 27 November last year, heard it was “difficult to fathom” how the two child defendants could carry out such a disturbing crime.

Brianna’s mother, Esther Ghey, branded her daughter’s killers ‘cowardly’

Jurors were told Jenkinson, who has traits of autism and ADHD, and Ratcliffe, diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and who is non-verbal, discussed Brianna’s murder for weeks, detailed in a handwritten murder plan and phone messages found by detectives.

At age 14, Jenkinson, who described herself as a Satanist, had downloaded a TOR internet browser app to watch videos of the torture and murder of real people in “red rooms” on the “dark web”. She became fascinated with serial killers, making notes on their methods, and admitted enjoying “dark fantasies” about killing and torture.

The pair lived in a secret world of warped interests in murder and cruelty. They drew up a “kill list” of four other youths they intended to harm until Brianna had the “misfortune” to be befriended by Jenkinson, who became “obsessed” with her.

The weapon used to murder Brianna, a hunting knife with a 13cm blade

Brianna had thousands of followers on TikTok, but in reality was a withdrawn, shy and anxious teenager who struggled with depression and rarely left her home.

The court heard Jenkinson told her accomplice she wanted to stab Brianna “jus coz its fun lol… I want to see the pure horror on her face and hear her scream”. She watched her favourite film, Sweeney Todd, for the “9,000th time” and discussed which knife her co-defendant would use, the night before Brianna’s murder.

The pair’s dark fantasies were about to become reality, as Jenkinson subsequently lured Brianna, who believed she was going to hang out with friends, to the park on a Saturday afternoon. She chillingly told Brianna when she caught the bus to meet them to buy not a return but only a single ticket. She also reminded Ratcliffe – whose phone number was saved in her phone under the name “Tesco John Wick”, a character from a film about a violent hitman – to bring his knife.

Jenkinson and Ratcliffe discussed Brianna’s murder for weeks, detailed in a handwritten murder plan and phone messages found by detectives

At around 3pm, Brianna, who had been seen sat on a bench, was suddenly attacked, possibly initially from behind, with a hunting knife with a 13cm blade, brought to the park by Ratcliffe. It is not known which defendant or if both wielded the knife. Brianna was “stabbed and stabbed and stabbed” in a “frenzied and ferocious” attack.

The next day, Jenkinson messaged Brianna saying: “Girl, is everything okay? Some teenage girl got killed in Linear Park it’s on news everywhere. And why did you ditch us for some random man from Manchester. Like wtf. That is so f***** up.” Meanwhile, Ratcliffe was online using the Crown Prosecution Service website, looking up penalties for supplying or withholding information.

Jenkinson then posted a tribute to Brianna on Snapchat, describing her as an “amazing friend” and that what had happened was “so f****** sickening”.

Brianna had thousands of followers on TikTok, but in reality was a withdrawn, shy and anxious teenager who struggled with depression and rarely left her home

After the defendants were traced and arrested, detectives found the murder weapon with Brianna’s blood on the blade in Ratcliffe’s bedroom, along with heavily blood-stained clothing and trainers. At Jenkinson’s home, they found a handwritten note detailing the murder plan and naming Brianna as the victim. Messages on their phones detailed an earlier attempt to poison Brianna with an overdose.

Jenkinson claimed at the trial that even though she enjoyed fantasies about murder she never intended any of it to become reality, while Ratcliffe claimed he just played along and never wanted to harm anyone.

Speaking after the guilty verdicts, Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Evans, head of crime at Cheshire Police, branded the killers “arrogant”, believing they would not be caught as Jenkinson claimed the local police were “shite”.

The gruesome murder of a transgender teenager in a public park prompted candlelit vigils worldwide protesting against perceived transphobia. However, detectives believe Brianna was killed not as a hate crime but because she was vulnerable and accessible, done for the “enjoyment” and a “thirst for killing”.

Clapham attack suspect who injured mother and 2 girls is convicted sex attacker - The Independent

‘We will catch him, I’m wholeheartedly confident,’ says police chief

A fugitive at the centre of a large manhunt for throwing an alkaline substance at a mother and her two children is a convicted sex offender.

Abdul Shokoor Ezedi left two of his victims with potentially life-changing injuries, with Tesco CCTV images showing him with severe burn marks down the right side of his face.

It has emerged that Ezedi was convicted of a sexual offence in 2018, before being granted asylum in the UK in 2021 or 2022 from his native Afghanistan. The 35-year-old had previously been refused asylum on two occasions but was granted leave to remain after converting to Christianity.

In all, 12 people needed hospital treatment after the “targeted” attack in Lessar Avenue, Clapham, south London, on Wednesday evening.

Ezedi who is believed to be known to the mother, is thought to have travelled down from Newcastle on Wednesday, and was last seen in Caledonian Road.

The woman, 31, described as vulnerable, and her three-year-old daughter, were still in hospital alongside her other daughter, eight.

Suspect is a convicted sex offender

It has now emerged that Abdul Ezedi is a sex offender, who was convicted in 2018 of “sexual assault/exposure”.

This was before he was granted asylum in 2021 or 2022, after arriving in the UK by lorry in 2016.

It is also understood that he was granted asylum after two failed attempts.

Abdul Ezedi was ‘very persistent’ in buying car last summer

Ezedi is believed to have travelled down from the North East on the day of the attack, but detectives are unsure what led to the incident.

Bilal Khan, owner of Billy’s Garage in Byker, said the wanted man had been “persistent” when trying to buy a car off him last summer.

Mr Khan said: “He approached me last year asking if I had a car for sale. We had one which he was interested in and I told him the price. He was a very persistent type of guy, he doesn’t let things go easily.”

Mr Khan indicated that Ezedi lived in a nearby halfway house.

Fugitive had converted to Christianity to gain asylum

It is understood that Abdul Ezedi had twice failed to get asylum in the UK after arriving via lorry in 2016 from his native Afghanistan.

On his third application, he was granted asylum by the Home Office after a priest supported his claim that he had converted to Christianity and was “wholly committed” to his new religion.

He reportedly claimed his life would be in danger as a result and was granted leave to remain despite being convicted of sexual assault/exposure in 2018.

Minister calls to ‘end the asylum merry-go-round’

Children’s minister David Johnston was pressed by Sky News on reports the suspect in the alkaline substance attack in south London is a convicted sex offender who was granted asylum after two failed attempts.

Mr Johnston said: “I don’t have his case file and I can’t say anything that might affect the police’s investigation here.

“He is still at large and what we really need is anyone with information to come forward in order that he can be apprehended, given he is police’s key suspect.

“But on your broader point, it’s vital that we end the asylum merry-go-round that we have seen and that’s what the Safety of Rwanda Bill is all about.”

Police say suspect may have been known to them

Metropolitan police superintendent Gabriel Cameron believes that the suspect may have been known to them earlier as he was convicted of a sexual offence in 2018.

“At this stage I believe he may have been known to police but he’s not a local resident from London as far as I’m aware. He’s come down from Newcastle,” superintendent Cameron said.

Police released the image of suspect Abdul Ezedi last-known sighting from a Tesco store in Caledonian Road, in Islington.

“The image is taken from the Tesco store, where Ezedi is believed to have purchased a bottle of water. He left the shop and turned right.

“The image shows Ezedi with what appears to be significant injuries to the right side of his face. This makes him distinctive.

“If you see Ezedi, call 999 immediately. He should not be approached.”

Legal crackdown on corrosive substances came in 2019

The law on corrosive substances was strengthened in 2019 - the first time they had been specifially mentioned in legislation.

The Offensive Weapons Act outlaws the sale and delivery of corrosive products to under-18s, bans delivery to homes - and lockers in the case of remote sales - and makes it illegal to possess a corrosive substance in a public place without good reason.

Those found guilty may face up to four years in prison.

Anyone using acid or other corrosive substances in an attack is guilty of assault.

Depending on the severity of the injuries, they may be charged with assault causing actual bodily harm or grievous bodily harm with intent, which is punishable by jail sentences, including life imprisonment.
