Storm Isha Northern Ireland: Next storm named after Jocelyn Bell Burnell while roads and electricity disrupted after woman struck by debris in Belfast - Belfast Telegraph

Storm Jocelyn named after NI astrophysicist

Storm Jocelyn, which arrives on Tuesday evening, has been named after Northern Ireland astrophysicist Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell.
She discovered  the first pulsating radio stars in 1967 and is from Co Armagh.
The storm is set to last until Wednesday, with warnings of further strong winds and potentially damaging gusts.
When it was announced last year the storm would be named after her, Professor Bell Burnell said:

“I am delighted to feature in this distinguished list celebrating science and hope that if a potential Storm Jocelyn happens, it may be a useful stirring-up rather than a destructive event.

“Science advancements increase our knowledge and understanding of the world around us, and I think this is wonderful example of science-based services communications.”
The name of the storm was chosen by Met Éireann.

LIVE: Storm Isha latest updates as Met Office upgrades weather warnings - Manchester Evening News

Flights are cancelled

A yellow wind warning also covers the UK, including parts of London and the south-east, while four rain alerts were in place around the country.

Nearly four inches of rain could fall over a few hours in some regions and cause localised flooding, with nine flood warnings already in place across England.

Many train lines across Scotland will close on Sunday night, with ScotRail and Caledonian Sleeper among those stopping some services.

Avanti West Coast has warned against travel, with trains running at reduced speed, while TransPennine Express is advising passengers not to use services between Preston and Edinburgh and Preston and Glasgow in the afternoon.

LNER, advises against travel north of Edinburgh from the afternoon and into Monday, while Transport for Wales cancelled a number of services.

Elsewhere, East Midlands Railway said it expected “significant disruption” on Sunday and Monday and delays and alterations to services, while South Western Railway is reducing its trains in the west of England.

Air traffic control restrictions are in place, leading to some flight cancellations.

British Airways said: “Like other airlines, we have had to make schedule adjustments due to the adverse weather conditions across the UK and Europe caused by Storm Isha.

“We’ve apologised to our customers for the disruption to their travel plans and our teams are working hard to get them on their way as quickly as possible.”

Ferry company Wightlink has also warned of potential disruption, while the RAC warned drivers to lower their speeds and even consider delaying journeys.

Storm Isha is the ninth named storm to hit the UK since the season began in September.

Each storm is named when it poses a risk to people and they are given names beginning with consecutive letters of the alphabet.

The record number of named storms in one year is when the Met Office began the practice in 2015/16, with Storm Katie being the 11th and final storm of the season.

If there are three more named storms between next week and August, this year will mark a new record.

Cold Arctic air pushing south into North America is making the jet stream more active, the Met Office said, and because it flows from west to east, it is bringing stormier weather to the UK.

Teenage boy stabbed to death in Birmingham city centre - The Guardian

A teenage boy has been stabbed to death in Birmingham city centre.

West Midlands police said officers were called to Victoria Square after the 17-year-old was found seriously injured just before 3.30pm on Saturday. He was taken to hospital but later died.

A murder investigation is under way but no arrests have been made.

A cordon put in place around the scene has been lifted but the force said a “highly visible police presence” would remain in the area.

Ch Insp James Spencer said: “The life of a 17-year-old boy has tragically been taken away and all our thoughts are with his family and friends at this awful time.

“It’s very early stages in the investigation but we have a team of skilled detectives who are working to identify, and arrest, whoever did this. We fully understand the shock and concern this will cause, and although it is being treated as an isolated incident, a visible police presence will remain across the city centre.”

Police said they wanted to hear from anyone who walked through the area at the time or who may have been taking pictures by The River statue near the Council House as they may have “vital information or evidence”.

The force can be contacted on 101 or online, quoting log 2619 of 20 January.

Storm Isha: All UK to be hit by rain and gusts of up to 80mph - BBC

A car drives through flood water near Folkestone, Kent, during Storm Ciaran in November 2023PA Media

A new storm is set to hit the UK later with gusts of wind of up to 80mph (128km/h) and a risk to life.

Storm Isha has prompted amber weather warnings for wind in much of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland from 18:00 GMT. Yellow rain warnings are also in place in most areas.

Isha is the ninth named storm to hit the UK since September.

The Met Office said it was "relatively rare" for the whole of the country to be affected by storm warnings.

The storm's strongest winds are expected on Sunday night and into Monday morning, when three amber warnings from the Met Office come into effect.

The first is for parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, northern England and south-west England, in force from 18:00 on Sunday to 09:00 on Monday.

Three hours later, a separate amber wind warning begins, covering more of Scotland. It also expires on Monday morning.

A third, for parts of Kent, East Sussex and West Sussex starts at midnight on Monday, ending at 09:00.

There is a good chance of power cuts, which could affect mobile phone signal in affected areas, while roads and bridges are likely to be shut. Rail and bus services could face delays and cancellations.

It added there was a risk to life in coastal areas from large waves and debris being blown inland.

Met Office forecaster Ellie Glaisyer said: "It's a very widespread storm and it's going to be affecting everybody. Heavy rain will affect everybody, those strong winds will affect everybody. That's the main difference to previous storms we have seen."

Separate yellow weather warnings for rain and wind have also been issued.

Warnings for rain in parts of northern England and parts of Wales began at midnight and last until 06:00 on Monday, and a warning for rain in parts of Scotland runs from 15:00 to midnight.

And there is a warning for wind across all four UK nations from 12:00 on Sunday until 12:00 on Monday.

East Midlands Railway said it expected "significant disruption" on Sunday and Monday, including delays and alterations to services, while Police Scotland advised people to avoid unnecessary travel.

A spokesperson for Energy Networks Association, which represents Britain's energy network operators, said on Friday: "An amber warning brings an increased risk of damage to homes and vital infrastructure.

"Energy network operators are preparing to deal with any damage quickly and safely."

The Met Office has said heavy rain could lead to flooding this week. In England, the Environment Agency has issued eight flood warnings, where flooding is expected, and 52 flood alerts, where flooding is possible, as of Saturday evening.

After days of freezing temperatures and snow in some parts of the UK, higher temperatures are expected by the end of the weekend - but the Met Office has warned it may not feel warmer due to high winds.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said temperatures were going to be much higher than they have been.

"Quite widely, we could see places reaching highs of 12-13C," he told the PA news agency, "but we need to factor in the strong winds, the rain, the cloud, and so it is not going to feel quite so warm as this might suggest."

Storm Isha follows Storm Henk, which hit the UK earlier this month, causing flooding and disruption.

It will be the ninth named storm since September last year.

The Met Office names storms when they have the potential to cause disruption or damage. The agency says it is easier for people to follow the progress of a storm on TV, radio or social media if it has a name.

Storm Isha to batter UK with 80mph winds as amber warnings issued - Sky News

A storm is forecast to hit parts of the UK with strong winds and heavy rain as multiple amber warnings come into force.

Storm Isha - the ninth storm since September - will bring winds of up to 80mph, according to the Met Office.

The weather agency issued amber warnings for wind for northern and western England, Wales, Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland from Sunday into Monday.

Forecasters also warned of large waves and debris being blown inland in coastal areas, posing a potential risk to life and damage to buildings.

The amber warnings could lead to power cuts and increased congestion as roads and bridges are likely to be shut, while rail and bus services could face delays and cancellations.

East Midlands Railway said it expected "significant disruption" on Sunday and Monday, while Police Scotland advised people to avoid unnecessary travel.

Yellow warnings for rain and wind are in place for the rest of the country on Sunday, with floods likely.

The heaviest rain is expected on Sunday, with 30mm to 50mm in many places and 80mm to 100mm in hillier areas.

Warmer weather will accompany the adverse conditions after a week of snow and sub-zero temperatures.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said weekend temperatures were "going to be much higher than they have been" with highs of 12C to 13C (53.6F to 55.4F).

However, he said the strong winds, rain and clouds could overshadow the milder weather so it might not "feel quite so warm".

He added: "Temperatures will be on the mild side, lifting as we go through this weekend and staying mild through much of next week.

"There may be some chillier spells but I think that any frost is likely to be isolated if we see any at all."
