Five migrants trying to cross the Channel have died in French waters, a French maritime official told the BBC.

Around 70 people were trying to get into a small boat attempting to launch from a beach when it overturned in the early hours of Sunday morning, French media reports said.

Dozens were pulled from the water during overnight rescue efforts in Wimereux, to the south of Calais.

Foreign Secretary David Cameron said the incident was "heartbreaking".

Local authorities say four of the dead were from Iraq and Syria.

One person who is in a critical condition has been transferred to a hospital in nearby Boulogne-sur-Mer, a spokesperson from the French maritime prefecture told the BBC.

It said 32 people had been rescued and that one person has non-life threatening injuries.

Another person received treatment at the scene for severe hypothermia, the French Maritime Prefecture said.

People got into trouble almost immediately after the boat departed the French coast for England at around 02:00 local time (01:00 GMT).

Dozens were trying to board the vessel as it left the beach and found themselves in difficulty at sea, the French maritime prefecture said.

A tugboat patrolling the coast attended the scene and found the bodies.

Around 50 firefighters and several police vehicles were deployed to help, according to regional newspaper La Voix du Nord.

Dozens of survivors were taken to a local community centre, the paper reported.

Rescue efforts continued at around 05:00, with several boats and a French Navy helicopter being deployed, the paper added.

The French coast guard, who also confirmed the deaths, said a helicopter was used in the area.

The UK Coastguard had no involvement as the incident occurred in French waters very close to the beach near Wimereux.

Enver Solomon, chief executive of the Refugee Council, said the Channel deaths "must be a wake-up call to take decisive action" - including the provision of safe routes for those fleeing war-torn countries.

The deaths come one day after the first small boat crossing of the year was recorded.

It follows a nearly four-week period up to 11 January when no crossings to the UK were recorded, which the Home Office says was due to poor weather conditions.

The provisional total for 2023 - 29,437 crossings - is down on the record 45,774 crossings recorded for the whole of 2022.

But last year's total is still the second highest annual number of crossings on record.

Speaking to the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg, Lord Cameron said it was "heartbreaking" to hear more lives had been lost in Channel waters.

He said the British government had done "a huge amount" to support French authorities with policing and intelligence operations.

And he insisted that passing the UK government's Rwanda bill - which aims to send some asylum seekers to the African country - was "essential" to save lives and stop people crossing the Channel on small boats.

The bill is designed to discourage migrants from trying to cross the Channel in small boats.

Tory MPs are piling pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak over the bill, which Mr Sunak is trying to revive after the Supreme Court ruled the earlier scheme was unlawful.

Speaking on the same programme, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said the incident was a "tragic loss of life" and added: "I absolutely agree we need to stop these Channel crossings".

But the Labour leader rejected the "gimmick" of the Rwanda scheme, saying the UK should "go after the criminal gangs that are running this vile trade [of boat crossings]".

Separately, a French report earlier this month stated that the UK was not passing on enough information about small boats crossing the Channel.

According to the Court of Accounts, which audits spending in France, intelligence provided to French police was often "first level" and "very general".

Snow and ice warnings extended across UK as country braces for big freeze - Sky News

Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice are in place across the UK from today until the end of this week.

Snow is set to hit parts of Scotland today before spreading south next week as cold air from the Arctic brings freezing temperatures.

The Met Office issued new snow and ice warnings covering the whole of Scotland and parts of Wales and England, including Newcastle, Leeds and Manchester, on Tuesday. The whole of Northern Ireland is also under a yellow warning.

Yellow warnings also cover northern Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland and parts of the northwest of England and Wales on Wednesday and Thursday.

Across the days there are warnings for possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers, the occurrence of power cuts and possible delays or cancellations to rail and air travel.

The Met Office says parts of northern Scotland could see around 10cm of snow over the two days.

Up to 5cm of snow is expected in places by the end of Sunday, causing disruption on the roads and railways.

A yellow cold-health alert remains for the North East of England, Yorkshire and the Humber, East of England, South East of England and London for much of the incoming week.

Met Office meteorologist Honor Criswick said: "It is going to be feeling pretty chilly in the north of Scotland.

"Throughout the week we are going to see more and more snow showers and warnings, towards the end of the week we will probably see an accumulation.

"The warning is of 2cm to 5cm of snow, throughout the week there is the possibility we will see a build-up of snow."

He added: "On Tuesday, we are going to see more rain turning to snow moving east across the country, with more prolonged snow and more accumulations at low levels in the north of Scotland and northern England.

"That's where we could see 5cm or 10cm of snow in low-lying areas.

"There's a very low chance the south might see a bit of it."

Earlier this month, Storm Henk caused widespread flooding and two deaths, and more than 170 flood warnings remain in place.

New Met Office maps show exactly when first snow will fall in Greater Manchester next week - Manchester Evening News

Greater Manchester is now most likely to see snowfall on Tuesday, according to updated Met Office maps. A cold snap caused by winds from the Arctic is set to sweep over the country, starting this weekend.

Some forecasters have said that it could bring with it the worst snowstorm in 14 years. Whilst the Met Office has been slightly more cautious with its predictions, there are yellow weather warnings for snow and ice in place for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland from tomorrow.

And parts of the north east and Cumbria will also likely see some dustings on Sunday. However, it is likely to be a couple of days before that makes it way down to our region.

The Met Office's UK Precipitation Map shows a blanket of white moving in over the region between midnight and 3am in the early hours of Tuesday (January 16).

The city centre and western half of the city and Salford as well as Bolton, Rochdale and Wigan can all be seen covered by snow on the map. By 6am this expands to cover the entire region and areas around it.

The snow is expected to move in during the early hours of Tuesday

The Met Office's detailed forecast say there is a high probability of 'light snow' across the region for several hours between 6am and 9am as temperatures hover below freezing. The more northern areas could see further flurries between 9am and midday.

This is then likely to become sleet and then rain later on in the day as it becomes several degrees warmer. By around mid afternoon it is only the most northern areas of the region, such as Rochdale, which are likely to see any wintry showers as the clouds move north.

All areas are likely to see some snowfall from around 6am

Once this has cleared it becomes a much different picture, albeit still cold, with Wednesday set to be cloudy with sunny intervals, with tempratures touching freezing at points and peaking at just 2C.

Tomorrow (Sunday) is likely to be cloudy but dry with lows of -1C and highs of 4C. Monday will be clear and bright but temperatures could drop as low as -3.

The UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office issued a yellow Cold-Health Alert for all regions of England which will be in place untill next Friday (January 18).

It warns the conditions will 'seriously impact on the health of those over the age of 65 and those with pre-existing health conditions' and said it was vital people check in on friends, family and neighbours to ensure they are well prepared.
