Serious disruption to travel is continuing on Wednesday, with hundreds of flood warnings in place after Storm Henk battered parts of the UK.

Some 10,000 homes in parts of England are without power due to fallen trees and scaffolding.

It comes after large parts of England and Wales experienced strong winds and heavy rain on Tuesday.

The strongest gust of wind recorded on land was 81mph (130km/h) at Exeter Airport in Devon.

More than 300 flood warnings were in place in England early on Wednesday.

A severe flood warning, meaning there is a danger to life, has been issued for Billing Aquadrome, a leisure park in Northampton, and surrounding business units.

Local media reported that hundreds were told to evacuate amid rising water levels from the River Nene.

The flood alert, issued by the government, warned the situation posed a danger to life, and that the water may be "deep and fast flowing".

Hundreds of properties located near the River Severn in the West Midlands are flooded, in some cases for the fourth time this winter, according to BBC correspondent Phil Mackie in Worcester.

A severe flood warning is also in place for the River Ritec in Tenby, south-western Wales.

Residents of the Kiln Park caravan site near to Tenby have been told access to their vehicles may be limited, and there have been reports of raw sewage escaping into the water.

Some 10 other flood warnings are in place across Wales, and one in Scotland.

Flooding and power failures hit the UK's rail network on Tuesday, with disruption continuing in some parts on Wednesday.

  • Network Rail, which owns and manages the infrastructure, expects disruption to continue in the south and south-west of England because of trains and crew being displaced
  • South Western Railway suspended services for several hours on Tuesday after tress fell on the tracks. It has urged people to check whether their trains are running as planned on Wednesday
  • Some lines are blocked on Great Western Railway's network because of flooding
  • There is also disruption on parts of Thameslink, Southern, Gatwick Express and Great Northern, while repairs to the infrastructure are carried out
  • Southeastern said several trains from Kent and Sussex to London have been cancelled as they are not in the right place to start following the storm
  • Do not travel warnings are also in place on two Greater Anglia routes

Some of England's major roads have been closed because of flooding, including the A52 westbound carriageway between Nottingham and Edwalton.

Ross Easton, from the Energy Networks Association, which collates data from all energy providers, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that 125,000 homes had been reconnected to the grid, but 10,000 remained without power - mostly in central, southern and south-eastern parts of England.

The poor weather downed trees and caused treacherous conditions on Tuesday.

In Orpington, south-east London, a woman was taken to hospital after being struck by a falling tree. Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

In Greenwich, south-east London, the storm also brought down a scaffolding panel from a building, blocking a road.

The strongest gusts on Tuesday were recorded at the Needles Old Battery - an exposed coastal site in the Isle of Wight - reaching speeds of 94mph.

Gusts of 81mph were reached at Exeter Airport in Devon, and top winds hit 71mph at the Isle of Portland in Dorset and at Mumbles Head in Glamorgan.

The storm has largely moved onto Scandinavia. Winds are forecast to be lighter and there will also be sunnier spells during the rest of the week.

BBC Weather Presenter Simon King said: "By the weekend and into next week we're expecting high pressure to build which means that the weather will turn even more settled. Higher pressure means it'll be largely dry with sunshine amounts also increasing.

"With this high pressure becoming established though, we cut off the milder south-westerly winds with colder air returning giving chilly days and overnight frosts."

Henk was the eighth named storm in three months. The storm was named much later than usual - only hours before its impact - because it was small and still developing early on Tuesday morning.

The impact of climate change on the frequency of storms is still unclear, but we know that increased sea surface temperatures warm the air above and make more energy available to drive hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons. As a result, they are likely to be more intense with more extreme rainfall.

The world has already warmed by about 1.1C since the industrial era began and temperatures will keep rising unless governments around the world make steep cuts to emissions.

Meanwhile, 2023 was provisionally the second warmest year in the UK since records began, the Met Office said. The warmest year on record was 2022. Global temperatures are rising mainly because of human activity, leading to more intense heatwaves and rising sea-levels.

Wales weather: Heavy rain and wind warnings in place - BBC

Weather mapMet Office

Travel disruption is expected in many areas of Wales as forecasters warn of strong winds and heavy rain.

Met Office yellow weather warnings for much of the country came into force Monday night and will last until Tuesday night.

A number of flood warnings have also been issued by Natural Resources Wales.

Forecasters have said the wettest areas could see up to 50mm (1.9in) of rain, while coastal areas could see wind speeds of up to 60 mph (96km/h).

Train services between London Paddington and south Wales were being diverted on Tuesday, Great Western Railway said, because of flooding between Swindon and Bristol Parkway.

A yellow warning for rain came into force at 17:00 GMT on Monday and lasts until 21:00 on Tuesday.

It affects all local authority areas in Wales except Anglesey.

A separate yellow warning for wind is in place from 08:00 GMT until 21:00 on Tuesday, covering Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen and Vale of Glamorgan.

The Met Office said flooding of some homes and businesses was possible, in addition to power cuts and travel disruption.

American mother suspected of killing two of her children arrested in Britain, US police say - The Telegraph

An American mother suspected of killing two of her young children and injuring a third has been arrested in the UK, according to US police.

Kimberlee Singler’s nine-year-old daughter and seven-year-old son were found dead on December 19 when police responded to a report of a burglary at their home in the state of Colorado Springs.

Police found Ms Singler, 35, with minor injuries, at the home alongside the bodies of two other children and her 11-year-old daughter, who was hospitalised, Ira Cronin, spokesman for the Colorado Springs Police Department said.

At first Ms Singler was treated as a burglary victim and initially cooperated with police but disappeared during the investigation, Ms Cronin said.

Police later said the burglary report was unfounded.

Authorities were unable to apprehend her after obtaining an arrest warrant on Tuesday of charges of murder and attempted murde among other allegations.

Ms Singler was not under surveillance and was last seen in Colorado Springs on December 23, Ms Cronin said.

American police did not provide further details on the British arrest, but said they are working with multiple law enforcement agencies.

The children’s deaths came amid an ongoing legal battle between Ms Singler and her ex-husband over parenting time and other issues, according to court filings.

Primrose Hill stabbing: Man arrested after boy, 16, dies - BBC

A Metropolitan Police officer at the scene of the fatal stabbing

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a boy was stabbed to death in north London on New Year's Eve.

Police were called to the stabbing in Primrose Hill, Camden, at about 23:40 GMT on Sunday.

Officers gave first aid to the victim, who was believed to be a 16-year-old boy, but he was pronounced dead shortly before midnight.

A cordon has been set up at the park as detectives carry out forensic examinations at the scene.

The Metropolitan Police said the area was busy with people watching fireworks at the time of the stabbing and appealed for witnesses to contact them.

The park is not an official viewing area for London's New Year fireworks, but people gather there to watch them.

On Monday morning, police officers stood guard at every entrance to the park, directing dog walkers and joggers away from the area and telling them it would be closed all day.

Police tape has been used to section off the area, and a forensic tent has been erected at the northern end of Primrose Hill.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and taken into custody, police said.

The boy's family have been informed, and will be supported by specialist officers.

The best photos as Cardiff rang in 2024 with New Year's Eve celebrations - Wales Online

Heavy rain and high winds didn't put off these revellers from seeing in the new year in Cardiff city centre. From bar entertainment to pantomimes there were many things happening in Wales' capital to honour the end of 2023 and ring in 2024.

The ice skating rink at Cardiff's Winter Wonderland was available for midnight skates to take you into the new year while rock band Ocean Colour Scene also took to the stage at the Tramshed. In London, tens of thousands of revellers started 2024 with a bang as fireworks and drones lit up the sky over the capital and told the world the city is "a place for everyone". After the bongs of Big Ben sounded midnight the message: "London: A Place for Everyone" was written high above the crowds as the unity-themed display welcomed the new year.

In a display that lasted almost 15 minutes 100,000 people cast their eyes to the sky to take in the firework, laser, and drone spectacular. As hits by the Spice Girls, Calvin Harris, Dua Lupa and others rang out across the city revellers were invited to look back on 2023.

The celebration referenced the King's coronation and also used Charles' quote to mark the 75th anniversary of the Windrush crossing in which he said the new arrivals "collectively enrich the fabric of our national life". The display – which included more than 12,000 fireworks, 600 drones, and 430 lights – also paid homage to the NHS, which celebrated 75 years in 2023.

This is how Cardiff saw in 2024:
