Eurostar services to resume after major disruption - BBC

Passengers queue at the departure gates of the Eurostar terminal at Gare du Nord train station.Reuters

Eurostar has said it will run all services to London, Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam on Sunday following a day of major disruption.

New Year plans for thousands were in ruins after flooding in a tunnel under the River Thames led to the cancellation of all Eurostar services between London and Paris on Saturday.

Anxious passengers spent the day scrambling to find other travel routes.

Eurostar warned Sunday could still see delays and crowded stations.

Many passengers are still facing expensive hotel bills, significant difficulties getting to their destination or costly airfares. The Port of Dover said on Saturday that there was no remaining foot passenger availability for the day.

But in a statement on Saturday evening, which may give some people hope of reviving their New Year's Eve plans, Eurostar said: "Flooding in the Thames tunnels has been brought under control by Network Rail High Speed meaning at least one tunnel can now be used and a full service can operate.

"There will be some speed restrictions in place in the morning which may lead to delays and stations are expected to be very busy."

They said customers should visit the Eurostar website for more information on compensation.

Stories have been emerging from passengers facing difficult situations on both sides of The Channel.

A heavily pregnant woman from Norwich said she "sobbed for about an hour" after becoming stranded in Paris.

Ella Gatier, her four-year-old son Xander, and his father, were due to travel back to England after a break in Disneyland Paris.

She told the BBC on Saturday morning that the scene at Gare du Nord station was chaotic and no help was available for affected travellers.

Ms Gatier, who is 33-weeks pregnant, said the next available train was on 3 January - the day she is due back at work - with hotel and alternative travel being unaffordable.

"There are no trains, no ferries, no hotels", she said.

"I do not have £1,200 a night to stay in Paris. I cannot even get a train or any connections into Amsterdam and back across home to England.

"In addition, I am unsure if they will even allow me to fly at this stage in pregnancy."

Curt Downs

Also stuck at Gare du Nord were Curt Downs, his wife Megan and their one-year-old son.

"Eurostar staff there were completely overwhelmed and couldn't really suggest anything for us," he told BBC News.

One staff member told them they had 4,000 passengers to assist, Mr Downs said.

He added that the family spent two hours trying to find a way back to the UK, looking for ferries, car hire and flights.

They managed to get some of the last seats on a £450 flight from Paris to Manchester, from where Mrs Downs' mother is doing a five-hour round trip drive to get them home to Bedfordshire.

Meanwhile, at a crowded London St Pancras station, emotional travellers sat on suitcases, frantically trying to find alternative routes.

Christina David, 25, and Georgina Benyamin, 26, from Sydney, saw their train cancelled after travelling around Europe on a budget for three weeks.

They planned to "go hard" for their final stop in Paris - where they hoped to celebrate the New Year at an expensive hotel with a view of the Eiffel Tower - before flying home.

Ms Benyamin said she wanted to see Paris "light up" but was now feeling frustrated and angry.

"There were lots of people crying," said her friend, Ms David. "We don't know where to go, we have nowhere to stay."

A video taken inside the flooded tunnel shows water gushing onto the tracks from a pipe attached to the tunnel's wall.

Thames Water had earlier said a "fire control system" was likely to have caused the flooding. But HS1 said the source of the flooding will be the subject of an investigation, but at this stage it had "no evidence to suggest that the fire control system was related to the issue in any way".

It said flooding was "being resolved" and the line would be operational, but with speed restrictions in place and delays and disruption expected.

"We understand how frustrating this has been for passengers and apologise for the inconvenience caused at such an important time of the year," a spokesperson said.

It is the second time in 10 days there has been major disruption to Eurostar services, with a "last-minute strike" by French workers halting trains before Christmas.

All Southeastern's high-speed services to Ebbsfleet, which use the same line, were also been cancelled. The operator says it will run a reduced service on the route on Sunday.

Separately, there has been major disruption on Thameslink services - which run through London and across south-east England - and a reduced service on Northern Rail, which covers the north of England, due to staff shortages.

The Met Office has warned there could be disruption to domestic journeys this weekend, as wind and rain sweep across the UK.

Wind, rain and snow warnings as Eurostar trains cancelled - BBC

People braving the weather crossing the Millennium Bridge in London on WednesdayPA Media

Weather warnings for rain, snow and wind have been issued for large parts of the UK, with travellers facing disruption in parts of the country.

Strong winds are moving east across England and Wales, while sleet and snow is expected in parts of Scotland.

Travel delays are likely, with staff shortages hitting some rail lines.

Eurostar warned of "severe delays" as trains to and from London St Pancras International were cancelled due to flooding in a tunnel under the Thames.

Travel journalist Simon Calder said the station was "in chaos", with Eurostar cancelling 10 trains, representing about 8,000 passengers.

High-speed Southeastern services running between London St Pancras and Ebbsfleet are also affected.

Southeastern said Network Rail and Thames Water engineers were working to fix the problem, with disruption expected until midday.

Separately there is major disruption on Thameslink services due to staffing issues.

Elsewhere, a yellow weather warning for rain will be in place across much of Northern Ireland until 11:00 BST on Saturday. A similar warning starting at 10:00 will be in place for Wales.

Forecasters say flooding of homes and businesses is possible, as well as interruption to power supplies.

It comes days after Storm Gerrit left thousands of homes without power and caused disruption across the country.

A yellow warning for rain and snow has been issued for much of Scotland and is in place from 08:00 until midnight, with up to 25mm of rain forecast at lower levels.

The Met Office has said northern areas of Scotland are likely to see "significant snow" with up to 20cm on the highest ground.

Meanwhile, there is a yellow warning for gusty winds for Wales and southern and eastern parts of England, which is in place from 11:00 until 03:00 on Sunday.

Gusts of between 45 and 50mph (80.5km/h) have been forecast widely, while coastal areas in the west and south of England may see the strongest gusts of between 65 and 75mph.

People are being told to prepare for delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport, as well as power outages.

Earlier this week, Storm Gerrit brought widespread disruption across Scotland and northern parts of the UK.

A localised tornado in Stalybridge, Greater Manchester, on Wednesday tore the roofs of houses and destroyed walls.

Met Office issues new weather warnings for heavy rain, snow and ice - The Independent

File: Snow blankets Scottish towns as Met Office issues two weather warnings

The Met Office has issued weather warnings for rain, snow and ice across large swatches of the country over the weekend as Eurostar passengers face chaos as trains are cancelled.

There are six warnings in place for Saturday for ice, wind, rain and snow for most of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and large parts of southern England.

Travel delays, flooding and power cuts are to be expected according to the forecasters.

It comes as Eurostar and Southeastern trains were cancelled on Saturday morning due to flooding in tunnels near Ebbsfleet International.

Southeastern Railway said no services will run between Ebbsfleet and London St Pancras International until around noon. Eurostar has cancelled all services to and from St Pancras until at least 11.12am

The extreme weather is expected to continue into Sunday with a yellow weather warning due to stay in place for southern England until 3am.

Steven Ramsdale, a Met Office Forecaster said: “This system is likely to bring a range of weather including hill snow.

“Heavy rain will spread across all but the far north on Saturday affecting similar areas previously affected by Storm Gerrit. However, this rainfall will be a step down from that seen during Storm Gerrit.”

Scotland under 'significant snow' warning

Scotland is under rain, snow and ice warnings this weekend as the Met Office predicts high-ground areas in Scotland are likely to see "significant snow", with possibly 10 to 20cm building up.

A yellow warning for snow and rain will come into force at 8pm on Saturday and run until midnight.

Another warning says frequent showers have increased the risk of icy surfaces, urging people to be careful of slips and falls on icy surfaces.

UK set for unsettled New Year's weekend amid Storm Henk fears

Strong winds and rain continue today as the UK braces for an unsettled New Year's weekend with fears of another storm hitting the country.

The Met Office forecast says winds will continue to be strong, locally reaching gale force, with cloud and occasional heavy rain, over the northern parts today.

This weather system spreads northeast today, encompassing most regions by evening, with blustery showers dotting the southwest. Mild conditions persist in the southern parts, Met forecast says.

As the weekend progresses, the far northeast of Scotland will continue to see rain and gale force winds. Meanwhile, other regions will experience blustery showers, though conditions are expected to be relatively drier in the north. Temperatures are set to inch closer to normal, yet the impact may be lessened by strong winds throughout the day.

Man charged with murder over Sheffield car crash - BBC

Christian MarriottSouth Yorkshire Police

A man has been charged with the murder of a father-of-two, who died after being hit by a car as he helped an unconscious woman in Sheffield.

Chris Marriott, 46, was helping the woman when he and several others were hit by the vehicle on Wednesday.

Hassan Jhangur, 23, of Whiteways Road, Sheffield, will appear in court on Saturday charged with murder and five counts of attempted murder.

A 32-year-old woman remains in hospital in a serious condition, police said.

South Yorkshire Police said Mr Marriott, 46, had been out walking in the Burngreave area of Sheffield on Wednesday afternoon with his sons, aged six and eight, when the incident happened.

He was among several people hit by a car on College Close, including an off-duty midwife who had also stopped to help, the force said.

Mr Marriott died at the scene.

In a statement, Mr Marriott's family said: "Chris was a wonderful husband, dad, brother, uncle - and friend to many.

"He devoted much of his life to helping others.

"The circumstances of his death, although tragic and unfathomable to us his family, show the sort of man he was - to go to help rather than to turn away."

Mr Jhangur remains in police custody ahead of his appearance at Sheffield Magistrates' Court.

Thousands still without power as Met Office predicts more rain before New Year - live - The Independent

File: Snow blankets Scottish towns as Met Office issues two weather warnings

Thousands of homes remain without power as post-storm cleanup begins in the wake of Storm Gerrit.

Around 1,500 homes in Scotland experienced their second night without power while a lightning strike hit supplies in Wales.

The Met Office predict more rainfall to come ahead of New Year celebrations this weekend.

Steven Ramsdale, a Met Office Chief Forecaster said: “This system is likely to bring a range of weather including hill snow.

“Heavy rain will spread across all but the far north on Saturday affecting similar areas previously affected by Storm Gerrit. However, this rainfall will be a step down from that seen during Storm Gerrit.”

Earlier, a suspected tornado damaged roofs and smashed windows as a rare supercell thunderstorm passed over Greater Manchester overnight.

A major incident has been declared in Tameside, with 100 properties reportedly damaged by the powerful storm and debris littered across the area. The Met Office says it was likely a tornado.

Friday will see significant disruption for travellers with rail services urging passengers to check for the latest information before travelling across UK as several services remain called due to damage or system faults.

SSEN ‘confident’ of restoring power to all homes on Friday after Storm Gerrit

Electricity bosses are “very confident” that the remaining 750 properties in Scotland without power after Storm Gerrit will be reconnected on Friday.

Graeme Keddie, the director of corporate affairs at SSEN, said “hard work” by its staff has reconnected more than 45,000 properties who had lost power as a result of the latest storm to hit the UK.

High winds, heavy rain and snow damaged electricity networks in some parts of the country, but Mr Keddie said that by Friday morning there were 750 homes remaining without electricity, describing that as a “much improved picture”.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland’s Good Morning Scotland programme, he told how SSEN staff had “made a tremendous effort in restoring power to customers affected by Storm Gerrit, battling some very tough weather conditions”.

He said: “We have now restored power to over 45,000 homes and there are now 750 homes still to be connected.

“And we’re confident through the resource levels we have we can reconnect these customers throughout today.”

Tractor driver who tried to save three men stuck in 4x4 says they were 'swept away' - The Independent

A tractor driver who tried to rescue three men whose 4x4 vehicle had become submerged in the River Esk during Storm Gerrit said they were “swept away” as they attempted to cross the water.

Chris Ford, a firewood salesman, had received a call asking for his assistance shortly after the vehicle entered the river near Glaisdale at 11.48am.

Emergency services including fire services, police, ambulance and a helicopter rushed to the scene, with the 4x4 recovered further downstream and the three occupants confirmed to have died.

“There was a ford they were going over and they were swept down 400 yards. They were part of an off-road club,” Mr Ford said.

“I went down with my tractor. There was a couple of vehicles – one parked up. You couldn’t see the (other) vehicle. It was 3ft beneath the water.

“I helped get it out on to the riverbank with three other tractors.”

The incident occurred during Storm Gerrit which has caused widespread flooding

Another man who attempted to help those in the 4×4 was pulled to safety from the river and has received medical treatment.

Two other locals, Rosie and Andrew Dale, said they were with Mr Ford when he got the call to help and had seen several 4x4 vehicles pass their home towards the ford shortly before the incident.

Mrs Dale said “nobody local” would attempt to cross the ford in the current conditions.

The area is popular with 4×4 drivers, she said, adding: “In the summer you get 10 of them at a time.”

The tragedy occurred as Storm Gerrit caused flooding and travel chaos across the country throughout Wednesday and Thursday. Thousands of homes have lost power across Wales and Scotland, while a number of flood alerts have been issues for Yorkshire.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “Localised conditions across our area are making driving hazardous.

“Roads are particularly badly affected around the RiverEsk, to the north of the county, as we have seen with the tragic incident near Glaisdale.

“There was another incident at nearby Houlsyke at 12.49pm when a car got stuck in flood water and another at Kirby Wiske in Hambleton at 2.35pm.

“Thankfully, the occupants of both vehicles were brought to safety.

“The key advice is to consider whether your journey is necessary.

“Please avoid driving through any kind of standing or moving flood water if you possibly can.”
