Liberal Democrat conference: Sir Ed Davey challenges his party to 'tear down' Conservatives' 'blue wall' to help oust Boris Johnson - Sky News

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has challenged his party to "tear down" the Conservatives' "blue wall" in order to help oust Boris Johnson from Downing Street.

In his keynote address at the Liberal Democrat conference on Sunday, Sir Ed said the Tories would only lose power at the next election if his party took seats off them.

"Make no mistake: the electoral arithmetic is clear," he said. "These Conservatives can't be defeated next time unless we Liberal Democrats win Tory seats."

Chesham and Amersham: Tories lose seat for first time in 47 years

Sir Ed pointed to his party's recent victory at June's by-election in Chesham and Amersham - when they took the constituency from the Conservatives - as showing how "even in deepest, bluest Buckinghamshire the Tories can be beaten".

"In Chesham and Amersham, we knocked out one blue brick; now it's up to us to tear it down," he added.

In a series of attacks on Mr Johnson and his government, Sir Ed claimed that many in traditionally Conservative-supporting areas "just don't feel that Boris Johnson represents them, or shares their values".

"They're not convinced the prime minister is competent - or worse still, decent," he added.

And he said people who had voted Tory all their lives "now feel completely let down" and "betrayed".

Sir Ed said part of the reason for Lib Dem success in Chesham and Amersham was a "groundswell of frustration and discontent from people who feel ignored and taken for granted by this Conservative government".

He appeared in front of around 150 people in London's Canary Wharf in his first leader's speech in front of a live audience, although most of the Lib Dem conference has been held online.

Sir Ed attacked the Tories' cuts to Universal Credit, the reduction in the UK's foreign aid budget, Conservative immigration policies and the government's handling of the Afghanistan crisis.

And he also took aim at new Justice Secretary Dominic Raab, whose Esher and Walton constituency is one of the Lib Dems' key targets ahead of the next election.

Sir Ed joked that the former foreign secretary - who was widely criticised for being in Greece as Afghanistan fell to the Taliban - only accepted his three new jobs at last week's cabinet reshuffle "on the basis that three jobs would come with three times the holiday entitlement".

The Lib Dem leader accused Mr Johnson of "steering us all into another terrible crisis" - after Brexit and COVID-19 - as UK businesses suffer supply issues and labour shortages.

He claimed ministers had "ignored all the warnings" about the government's Brexit deal and new immigration rules.

And Sir Ed quipped: "To be fair, this is one time Boris Johnson has actually delivered; he said he wanted to 'f*** business', and he has well and truly f***** them."

He called on his party to think back to 1992, when the Tories last won a fourth term in office, to remember how then Lib Dem leader, the late Paddy Ashdown, called for the party to "be the catalyst, the gathering point for a broader movement dedicated to winning the battle of ideas which will give Britain an electable alternative to Conservative government".

"That was the role of the Liberal Democrats then and it is the role of the Liberal Democrats today," Sir Ed said.

"Boris Johnson is not a prime Minister worthy of our great United Kingdom. His Conservatives are not a government worthy of the British people.

"This prime minister and these Conservatives have got to go."

Although the Lib Dems and Labour discussed a coalition of their parties prior to the 1997 general election, Sir Ed has recently said he is "very sceptical" of a possible deal between current opposition parties.

Outlining his "fair deal" offer to British voters ahead of the next election in his speech, Sir Ed outlined commitments on climate change - such as banning new oil, gas and coal companies from the London Stock Exchange - as well as plans to replace business rates with a land tax and a proposal to allow unpaid carers and those they care for to have their own care budget.

In the major policy announcement of his speech, Sir Ed called for the government to match what their own education adviser, Sir Kevan Collins, urged ministers to do and put at least £15bn into a post-pandemic catch-up fund for pupils.

He said schools should be able to spend the cash "as they see best", while the Lib Dems have proposed that £5bn of the money over a three-year programme should be handed to parents in the form of catch-up vouchers.

"Parents could choose to spend it with their child's own school - on an after-school homework club, on one-to-one tuition, on special extra-curricular activities from sports to music lessons, provided for that child by their school," he said.

"Or parents could choose to spend it on tuition they organise. Or with a music teacher they find. Or on therapy and counselling.

"As long as it was supporting the education and well-being of their child, it would be the parents' choice."

Lib Dem leader Ed Davey insists party ''absolutely' believes in free speech amid trans rights row - Daily Mail

Lib Dem leader Ed Davey insists party 'absolutely' believes in free speech amid trans rights row over activist barred from standing for Parliament for wearing T-shirt featuring 'problem' slogan 'Woman: Adult, Human, Female'

  • Party leader quizzed over the action taken against mother-of-two Natalie Bird
  • Mum-of-two, 40, barred from running in Wakefield after complaint about clothes
  • Sir Ed said 'Woman: Adult, Human, Female' slogan on her T-Shirt was a 'problem'

Ed Davey insisted the Liberal Democrats believed in free speech today as he was grilled over the party's decision to bar a member from running for Parliament over her views on transgender women.

Ahead of his party conference speech this afternoon the party leader was quizzed over the action taken against mother-of-two Natalie Bird earlier this year.

The 40-year-old was blocked from standing in Wakefield, Yorkshire, and  banned from the party office for 10 years after a complaint about her wearing a T-shirt reading, 'Woman: Adult, Human, Female'.

She is now taking legal action under the Equalities Act against the Lib Dems, claiming she was 'hounded' by trans activists who accused her of 'disseminating transphobic material over a prolonged time'.

Grilled on the case on the BBC's Andrew Marr programme today he was asked what was wrong about the phrase 'woman, adult, human female'.

'The phrase actually doesn't really encapsulate the debate, to be honest,' he said.

'That's what's the problem with it. The issue that we have been really is that a trans woman is a woman and a trans man is a man. And that is the issue that we're fighting on. We believe trans rights are human rights.'

He later added: 'We absolutely believe in free speech, but we also believe that we need to protect human rights and we need to believe in equality.'

Ms Bird previously faced allegations of transphobia in 2018 when trans woman Zoe O'Connell (left) allegedly complained about her suggesting women refuges should be segregated based on biological sex rather than chosen gender

Ms Bird, who escaped an abusive partner, told the Telegraph in June she was the victim of a 'sinister' witch hunt, adding: 'Within day to day life I've got trans friends, and if you've got somebody who wants to be treated as a woman socially, I believe everybody should do that, be polite and give them their preferred name.

'But that does not automatically mean that you become a woman.'

She previously faced allegations of transphobia in 2018 when trans woman Zoe O'Connell allegedly complained about her suggesting women refuges should be segregated based on biological sex rather than chosen gender.

A disciplinary hearing found no evidence of transphobia at the time but she lost her position as chairwoman of the Radical Association after a vote of no confidence.

The furore came as House of Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle condemned threats made to a Labour MP after she was forced to pull out from her party conference amid threats from trans rights activists.

Sir Lindsay said politicians should be able to appear publicly 'without fear of harm' after Canterbury MP Rosie Duffield revealed she would miss the upcoming Labour event in Brighton.

Ms Duffield, who won her seat in 2017 from the Conservatives, claims she has been branded transphobic for 'knowing that only women have a cervix'.

The 50-year-old MP has also previously waded into the debate about access to female-only spaces.

She told the Sunday Times today that she has been the victim of threats and 'misogynistic attacks' online, including being branded a 'bimbo'.

As a result, she will not attend this year's Labour party conference, which begins in Brighton on Saturday.

Now Sir Lindsay has waded into the safety row, saying MPs should be able to attend their party conferences 'without threats of intimidation'.

Sir Ed used his conference speech in Canary Wharf today to issue a rallying cry to his party to drive Boris Johnson from No 10 saying he was not 'worthy' to be Prime Minister.

In his keynote address to his party's annual conference, Sir Ed said the Tories could only be ousted from power if the Lib Dems take seats from them at the next general election.

He launched a bitter personal attack on Mr Johnson accusing him of a 'total lack of shame or decency', saying the Conservative Party had become an 'ugly, ugly sight' under his leadership.

Sir Ed also used his speech to call for a £15 billion Covid catch-up plan for education with vouchers worth £200-a-year issued directly to parents to spend on their children's learning.

In his first live address since becoming leader last year, Sir Ed said the Lib Dems' win in the recent Chesham and Amersham by-election, where they overturned a 16,000 Conservative majority, showed they could take seats in the so-called Tory 'blue wall' across southern England.

Speaking to around 150 activists in London's Canary Wharf, he said part of the reason for their victory was a 'groundswell of frustration and discontent' among voters who felt ignored and taken for granted by the Tories.

'They just don't feel that Boris Johnson represents them,' he said.

'Or shares their values. They're not convinced the Prime Minister is competent, or worse still, decent,' he said.

'Wherever you look in this shocking Government, the truth is, that over the last few years Boris Johnson has remade the Conservative Party in his own image.

'And it is an ugly, ugly sight. His casual disregard for facts or truth. His trail of broken promises from ''No border in the Irish Sea'' to ''No tax rise''.

'And his total lack of shame or decency. Boris Johnson is not a Prime Minister worthy of our great United Kingdom.'

David Jason leads tributes to Only Fools And Horses co-star John Challis, who played Boycie, after his death aged 79 - Sky News

Sir David Jason has described his Only Fools And Horses co-star John Challis as a "gentleman in the true sense of the word".

Challis passed away following a "long battle with cancer", his family said.

Sir David's character Del Boy was often in conflict with Challis's second-hand car dealer, Boycie, on the hit TV show.

"It is with much sadness to hear that John Challis, a dear friend, has passed away," he said in a statement.

"He was a wonderful actor, a gentleman in the true sense of the word and I know he will be missed by so many."

He said Boycie was "a character so well loved by the many fans of that show so I am pleased that he witnessed the outpouring of admiration recently shown for the 40th anniversary of the first episode in 1981.

"I send my love and condolences to his wife, Carol."

American rapper Ice T, who says Challis had "somehow" become a Twitter friend, also paid tribute.

Sue Holderness, who played Challis's on-screen wife, said: "Marlene without Boycie - it's unthinkable. John Challis was my partner on screen and stage for 36 years and my beloved friend. R.I.P. darling John. I will miss you every day."

Allo Allo actress Vicki Michelle said she was "shocked and saddened" to hear of his passing, adding that Challis was "such a fabulous man" and "loved by the nation".

Sheila Ferguson, from The Three Degrees, tweeted a picture of her and Challis and said she had been "waiting for this for a few days now".

The singer added: "I've been in touch with his wife, Carol, who is obviously heartbroken, as am I."

Crissy Rock, who starred alongside Challis in Benidorm, tweeted: "John you were a true gentleman and always so loving and supportive towards me. I am thinking of your family and close friends at this hard time. Rest well. Crissy xx."

Dr Who star Colin Baker said Challis was "funny, warm, and a great lover of his garden and nature".

Somerset Country Cricket Club tweeted a video of Challis - a "long-term supporter" - recorded earlier this year in the character of Boycie in which he announced the extension of a player's contract.

The club said it was "extremely saddened" by his death.

The RNLI said Challis had shown "incredible support" for the sea rescue organisation, "for which we will always be grateful".

And boxer Frank Bruno tweeted: "He (Challis) used to say to me: 'Franklyn, my dear boy, how the devil are you? Boxed anybody round the ears recently?'

"Loved all the TV he did."

CO2 shortage may 'cancel Christmas', major poultry supplier warns - Sky News

A shortage of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas means Christmas dinners could be cancelled, the owner of the UK's biggest poultry supplier has said.

A steep rise in gas prices has caused two large fertiliser plants in Teesside and Cheshire which produce CO2 as a by-product to shut, hitting supply to the food industry.

Ranjit Singh Boparan, the owner of Bernard Matthews and 2 Sisters Food Group, said supply issues, as well as a shortage of workers, will affect the supply of turkeys for Christmas.

CO2 is used in the humane slaughter of livestock and to extend the shelf-life of products. It is also vital to cooling systems for refrigeration purposes, industry leaders have said.

"There are less than 100 days left until Christmas and Bernard Matthews and my other poultry businesses are working harder than ever before to try and recruit people to maintain food supplies, Mr Boparan said.

"Nothing has fundamentally changed since I spoke about this issue in July. In fact, I take no pleasure in pointing out that the gaps on the shelves I warned about then are getting bigger by the day.

"The supply of Bernard Matthews turkeys this Christmas was already compromised as I need to find 1,000 extra workers to process supplies. Now with no CO2 supply, Christmas will be cancelled.

More on Christmas

"The CO2 issue is a massive body blow and puts us at breaking point, it really does - that's poultry, beef, pork, as well as the wider food industry.

"Without CO2, the bottom line is there is less throughput and with our sector already compromised with lack of labour, this potentially tips us over the edge."

Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng, who met with several industry leaders over the CO2 shortage on Saturday, said on Twitter there is no "cause for immediate concern" over the supply of gas in the UK.

Mr Boparan continued: "When poultry cannot be processed it means they must be kept on farms where there are potential implications for animal welfare, so the overall effect is welfare compromised and greatly reduced supply. Ready meals lose that vital shelf life. There is potential for massive food waste across the board.

"This is clearly a national security issue and unlike the labour supply crisis, where the Government response to our sector has been disappointing to say the least, it has to be dealt with as a matter of urgency.

"I'd like to see CO2 supplies prioritised for the food sector so UK supply can be maintained and for the Government to support these fertiliser plants who are saying they've switched off because of the rising price of natural gas.

"It really beggars belief when such a key infrastructure operation can arbitrarily decide to switch off the taps because of price inflation. It is irresponsible and catastrophic for our sector.

"We can't just down tools because of inflation. In my businesses, you have to roll up your sleeves as best you can and tackle it head-on. Giving up and saying 'inflation is too high' is not an option."

He added: "It's tough enough having one hand tied behind our backs by simply not having enough people to supply food.

"With the CO2 on top of this, both hands are tied. Government need to act now or we'll have another cancelled Christmas."

Man subjected to exorcisms over 'witchcraft' claims fears UK victims being missed during pandemic - Sky News

A man who was subjected to two years of exorcisms after being accused of witchcraft believes victims are going undetected in the UK during the coronavirus pandemic.

Mardoche Yembi told Sky News his relatives believed he was possessed by an "evil spirit" as a child and blamed him for his mother's death after moving to London from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He fears youngsters have been at greater risk of the abuse during the UK's lockdowns after campaigners said children with COVID have been branded witches in some communities.

Police have warned cases of child abuse linked to faith or belief are "highly under-reported" - and there are fears school closures during the pandemic have worsened the problem.

Just six cases were recorded by the Metropolitan Police in the first half of 2021, compared to 37 cases throughout the whole of 2018.

Detective Sergeant Kate Bridger told Sky News that abuse by believers in witchcraft and spirit possession "can take all different forms" including physical, sexual and emotional.

"People who are 'possessed' could be cut, beaten, or have chilli powder put on any orifice to burn the spirit coming out," she said.

"Ultimately, a person could be murdered because that person is the vessel for that evil spirit that creates such a risk for the believer."

• Children killed in UK over witchcraft and possession claims

Fifteen-year-old Kristy Bamu was tortured and murdered by his older sister Magalie and her partner after they accused the teenager of using witchcraft in east London in 2010.

On Monday, a hospital anaesthetist is due to be sentenced after injecting his partner with drugs during a series of exorcism ceremonies, leaving her close to death with multiple organ failure.

Hossam Metwally made dozens of video recordings of himself administering fluids through a cannula to Kelly Wilson while chanting as part of a "dangerous perversion" of the Islamic Ruqya ritual, Sheffield Crown Court heard.

The 60-year-old, who is originally from Egypt, told the jury he performed rituals on Ms Wilson to exorcise evil spirits, called Jinns, but claimed he only used holy oil and did not inject anaesthetics.

However a jury found the father-of-four guilty of endangering Ms Wilson's life through the unlawful and deliberate intravenous administration of anaesthetics or sedative agents and drug possession offences.

• 'The pastor came into the house... trying to get the demon off me'

Mr Yembi said he was first branded a witch by relatives at the age of 11 and he faced a two-year ordeal that left him "scared" and "depressed".

"They took me to church to try to get the 'demon spirit' away from me - that's what they called it," he told Sky News.

"I started running away from home a lot because there was a lot of shouting and a lot of blaming on me.

"The pastor came into the house a lot, preaching and trying to get the demon off me."

Mr Yembi said he was threatened with a knife in one incident and, on another occasion, his treasured football trophy was burnt.

"I don't want any child to go through it," he said. "It's just bad. I was depressed. I was in a bad place.

"I just felt lonely.

"I started getting scared.

"I couldn't do anything in the house. I had to go in my room and lock myself in there."

• Fears children accused of witchcraft being missed

Before he moved to the UK, Mr Yembi said he had seen children accused of witchcraft in Congo go through horrific rituals in which they were beaten and had chilli pepper rubbed in their eyes.

After his school learnt of a plan to take him back to the African country, Mr Yembi said social services became involved and he was admitted to a mental health hospital after his ordeal left him feeling suicidal, before he was placed in foster care.

The 29-year-old said he was never physically harmed and he has forgiven the relatives involved - who were not prosecuted - but he no longer speaks to them.

"I believe they still believe in it," he added.

Mr Yembi, who is now a painter and decorator in London, as well as a motivational speaker, said he believes children are still being accused of witchcraft in the UK today.

"With the lockdowns, any kid who is going through it, it doesn't help to be honest," he added.

• Children with COVID symptoms accused of being 'possessed'

International human rights activist Mandy Sanghera said she is aware of cases where people have sought rituals to cure "evil spirits" in children during the pandemic, after they have been blamed for adults losing jobs or being put on furlough.

She said some of those who carry out rituals claim that COVID is not real and tell the parents of children with symptoms of the virus that they are "possessed".

"People's religion overrides their common sense sometimes," she told Sky News.

"We need professionals to be very clear about protection and not political correctness.

"Sometimes people - frontline social workers, police officers - won't address certain things because they'll say 'it's cultural' or 'we don't want to get involved'. But sometimes it's too late."

Ms Sanghera said some people have been charged "hundreds of pounds and even thousands" for exorcisms and rituals to be carried out.

Some parents of children with epilepsy have been told "that was the evil spirit coming out", she added.

"It's really shocking some of the things people will believe, in the name of religion and culture," she said.

• Which cultures and religions believe in witchcraft and spirit possession?

According to the Met Police, child abuse linked to faith or belief is not confined to one faith, nationality or ethnic community.

Examples have been recorded across several religions including Christians, Muslims and Hindus, the force said.

In England, around 1,950 suspected victims of child abuse based on faith or belief were identified by councils in 2018/19 - a 34% increase on the previous year, according to the Local Government Association.

Met Police inspector Allen Davis, who works to tackle abuse linked to faith and belief, told Sky News that the risk had increased during the pandemic.

"We can't afford for this to be a taboo subject," he said. "This is about protecting the vulnerable.

"It's out there. We're doing something about it.

"If we don't respond and we don't intervene early, what can be the worst scenario? That's when we end up with the tragic child murders that we're trying to prevent."

Leethen Bartholomew, head of the National FGM Centre, said the pandemic had resulted in children having less contact with professionals - such as teachers and youth workers - who "spot the signs" of abuse linked to claims of witchcraft and spirit possession.

The organisation has previously warned that if vulnerable children or adults contract COVID, they could be labelled as being witches or possessed by families with those beliefs.

"The pandemic has put extra pressures on families, particularly those living in difficult circumstances, which can fuel harmful acts of abuse or neglect on children," Mr Bartholomew said.

COVID-19: Booster jab invitations to be sent out across England this week - Sky News

More than a million people in England will receive an invitation to book their COVID-19 booster jab.

Texts will be sent out on Monday, while letters will be posted to those who are eligible for a third coronavirus vaccine dose later in the week, NHS England said.

Around 1.5 million people will be contacted and encouraged to use the National Booking Service.

Those eligible for booster jabs include those aged 50 and over, people living and working in care homes for the elderly and frontline health and social care workers.

Booster shots will also be available to those who are clinically extremely vulnerable and anyone aged 16 to 65 in an at-risk group for COVID.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) said this week that people should receive their booster dose at least six months after they received their second COVID jab.

Scientists advising the government also urged people to get the Pfizer jab as a third dose, regardless of which jab they were initially administered.

The JCVI also said half doses of the Moderna jab could be used as an alternative.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said boosters will "strengthen the wall of defence" created by the vaccines.

He said: "It is excellent that getting your booster jab has now become even easier thanks to the opening of the National Booking Service to those eligible.

"Booster doses are an important way of keeping the virus under control for the long term and will protect the most vulnerable through the winter months."

Mr Javid said he urges everyone who receives a letter or text to get their jab "as soon as possible" in order to strengthen the wall of defence across the country.

Dr Nikki Kanani, GP and deputy lead for the COVID vaccination programme, said: "The NHS COVID vaccination programme has already prevented 24 million cases and saved more than 112,000 lives.

"As we head into winter we should not drop our guard so I would urge everyone to come forward and get a booster vaccination when they are invited.

"Getting a top-up vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from this cruel virus."

People who receive an invitation can book their appointment here, and those who cannot go online can instead call 119.

NHS England said millions of more invitations will be issued in the coming days and weeks.

Meanwhile, local health teams will prioritise care home residents and staff who are eligible and offer a booster jab by the beginning of November.

UK energy groups in emergency talks with government over natural gas crisis - Financial Times

UK business and energy secretary Kwasi Kwarteng was making emergency calls to some of Britain’s biggest energy groups on Saturday, as fears grow that four more suppliers could fail in the next 10 days as a result of record high gas and power prices.

Five smaller suppliers have gone out of business since the start of August as surging wholesale prices have left companies with insufficient hedging strategies or weak balance sheets unable to cover the cost of the energy they had committed to supply.

There are growing concerns among CEOs of the bigger suppliers that the five, including People’s Energy and Utility Point, with 570,000 domestic customers between them, are just the tip of the iceberg.

Further failures in the next 7-10 days could see 1m customers needing to be transferred to new suppliers.

The worry among suppliers is that taking on customers who are on fixed price energy tariffs would be loss making for their businesses, risking weakening even the larger companies.

Energy consultancy Baringa has said there may be “less than 10 suppliers by the time we come through winter”. At the end of March, there were 49 domestic suppliers, according to the latest available market share data from Ofgem.

Kwarteng said in a series of Tweets that he would meet Ofgem, the regulator, on Sunday to discuss the situation before convening a roundtable with industry on Monday “to plan a way forward.”

He said executives had assured him security of the UK’s gas supplies was “not a cause for immediate concern.”

“Britain has a diverse range of gas supply sources, with sufficient capacity to more than meet demand,” Kwarteng said. “We do not expect supply emergencies this winter.”

“However, our exposure to volatile global gas prices underscores the importance of our plan to build a strong, homegrown renewable energy sector to further reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.”

Kwarteng added that energy security was an “absolute priority” and the government was working with Ofgem and gas operators to monitor supply and demand.

A director at one big energy supplier called the situation “unprecedented” and said there may be a “tsunami” of supplier failures which would put severe pressure on Ofgem’s process for ensuring the customers of those businesses were reallocated to another company.

Energy suppliers familiar with the talks said that while nothing had been decided on Saturday a number of options were being debated with the government. They indicated the most likely was a form of government-backed loan for companies that took on customers of any suppliers that shut down.

Other options include lowering or removing certain levies on consumer bills.

A director at one of the bigger energy companies warned there were fears in the market that some of the larger suppliers could also be in trouble and questioned whether some might prove “too big to fail”.

Ofgem acknowledged that the record wholesale gas prices were “undoubtedly putting pressure” on energy suppliers but insisted it had the “systems and processes in place to ensure that customer needs are always met”.

This might include the appointment of a special administrator to temporarily run a failed supplier if a supplier of last resort was not possible, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial strategy said.

Michael Lewis, the chief executive of Eon UK, told the Financial Times in an interview last week that the situation facing suppliers was “extremely challenging,” as the market had already been “fragile” before the recent spikes in wholesale prices.

He pointed out that the industry was, on aggregate, lossmaking following the introduction in 2019 of a price cap for 15m households that limits suppliers’ margins.

Ofgem on Friday appointed EDF Energy to take on 220,000 customers from Utility Point, but it is yet to name an alternative supplier for People’s Energy customers.

Record gas prices are having ramifications across the UK economy, forcing the closure this week of two large fertiliser plants in the north of England and threatening the supply of products from meat to steel.

Ed Miliband, the UK’s shadow business secretary, had earlier this week accused the government of being “nowhere to be seen”.

“It is a fundamental failure of long-term government planning over the past decade that we are so exposed and vulnerable as a country and it is businesses and consumers that are paying the price,” Miliband said.

The government said the UK benefited from access to diverse sources of gas supply “to ensure households, businesses and heavy industry get the energy they need at a fair price.

“We are monitoring this situation closely and are in regular contact with the food and farming organisations and industry, to help them manage the current situation.”

Gas prices in Britain and Europe have hit repeated highs in recent weeks as traders fear the continent is heading into winter with record low stocks. Storage facilities were left depleted after extended cold weather last winter.

Lower supplies from Russia, as well as domestic sources as gasfield operators undertook maintenance delayed from last year, limited injections into storage facilities over the summer.

Soaring gas prices have had a knock-on effect on power prices, particularly in countries such as Britain where the fuel is the biggest single source of electricity generation.

Low wind speeds have added to the high electricity prices, while outages at other power stations, plus a fire at Britain’s main subsea electricity cable from France on Wednesday, have led to concerns over whether there will be sufficient supplies over winter.
