Covid vaccines for teenagers 'already too late to blunt autumn wave' - The Times

The vaccination of children against Covid-19 is already too late to blunt an autumn wave of infection, a leading scientist has said amid concerns about parental confidence in jabs for teenagers.

Professor John Edmunds’s comments come as the deputy head of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) acknowledged that it would be uncomfortable if ministers pressed ahead with immunising teenagers after his committee refused to back it. A senior MP said that parents would not trust the vaccination campaign unless it was explained better.

Chris Whitty, the chief medical officer for England, and his counterparts for the other home nations are due to make a decision this week on whether the wider benefits to children make it worth vaccinating millions of them after

COVID: Doctor calls for 12-year-olds to be allowed to overrule parents on coronavirus vaccine - Sky News

Some children as young as 12 should be allowed to overrule their parents on whether they have the COVID vaccine, a senior doctor has said.

Dr David Strain, a clinical lead for COVID services, told Sky News he believed there were 12-year-olds "mature enough" to decide to have the coronavirus jab without the consent of their legal guardians.

Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi has said parental consent will be required if the government decides that all 12 to 15-year-olds should be offered the jab.

COVID-19 and kids: Should we be worried?

However Dr Strain, who is senior clinical lecturer at the University of Exeter Medical School, says a school nurse or GP could assess whether a child is capable of consenting to having the vaccine, even if their parents were opposed to it.

"Some children at the age of 12 are mature enough to make that call," he said.

"It will be dependent on people with training - the school nurse, the GP - people who have sufficient training to identify that."

Dr Strain said a similar assessment could be carried out to that given to girls under the age of 16 who want the contraceptive pill.

More on Covid-19

He added: "I would argue if we have children who are legally permitted to make decisions about whether they're going to partake in underage sex, then a similar sort of competence procedure could apply to whether they have competence to take the vaccine or not."

Dr Strain said he did not endorse forcibly giving the COVID vaccine to children who refuse it.

"With this particular vaccine, we are vaccinating children predominantly for the greater good, rather than for their individual good," he said.

"If a child themselves refuses consent, and was said to be competent, then it would be almost impossible to give that jab.

"I would in no way endorse holding someone down and giving them a jab... when they're not getting the massive medical benefits that the older adults are getting. They are getting marginal benefits."

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) decided against recommending COVID vaccines for all 12 to 15-year-olds on health grounds alone, given the virus presents such a low risk to them.

The UK's chief medical officers are currently reviewing the wider benefits of the move, such as reducing school absences, and they are expected to present their findings within days.

Asked whether the JCVI's recommendation would result in fewer parents allowing their children to have the jab, Dr Strain replied: "That's going to be very dependent on the messaging that comes out from the chief medical officers.

"If the messaging from the chief medical officers is they are very much in favour and it's very clear why they're in favour, then I think most parents will go along with it.

"There's huge trust for Chris Whitty and Jonathan Van-Tam and their respective colleagues in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

"If it is a woolly statement or if it comes from a politician, rather than a chief medical officer, then I think the JCVI decision will have a massive impact."

Marcus Rashford says child food poverty 'devastatingly' worse - BBC News

Campaigning footballer Marcus Rashford has said child food poverty is getting "devastatingly" worse.

The England forward, 23, has called on people to write to their MP in a bid to end a "child hunger pandemic".

He has spoken out as a Food Foundation survey found 15% of 6,490 households have experienced insecurity about food in the past six months.

Data showed this was 27% higher than before the coronavirus pandemic, when Rashford began his hunger campaign.

The government has been asked to comment.

The Manchester United striker said: "While we've come a long way in the last 20 months, placing the issue of child food poverty at the forefront, devastatingly, the issue is getting worse not better.

"The entire nation got behind the national team this summer so let's put these figures in football terms: You can fill 27 Wembley stadiums with the 2.5 million children that are struggling to know where their next meal might be coming from today.

"What is it going to take for these children to be prioritised?

"Instead of removing support through social security, we should be focusing efforts on developing a sustainable long-term road map out of this child hunger pandemic."

Marcus Rashford

Rashford is supporting three recommendations as part of businessman Henry Dimbleby's National Food Strategy, which aims to guarantee that every child at risk of going hungry gets some good food every day:

  • Expand free school meal eligibility to all children aged 7-18 in all households earning £20,000 or less after benefits, and to children who are undocumented or living in immigrant households with "no recourse to public funds"
  • Provide long-term funding for the Holiday Activities and Food Programme
  • Expand Healthy Start eligibility to all households with pregnant women or children under five earning £20,000

The player, who has told of his own impoverished childhood in Wythenshawe, Manchester, is calling on the government to support the plans.

Last year he waged a high-profile campaign to persuade ministers to provide free meals to vulnerable children throughout the school holidays during the pandemic, forcing Prime Minister Boris Johnson into a U-turn.

Anna Taylor, executive director of The Food Foundation, said: "This will only get worse if left unaddressed and entrench inequalities deeper."

The 10 jobs where people are needed most as UK faces vacancy crisis, according to recruitment confederation - Sky News

The UK economy is suffering an acute shortage of workers with vacancies running at record levels, according to official figures.

The crisis has led to growing calls across key sectors for government intervention, as recruitment is hampered by a combination of post-pandemic shortfalls and Brexit rules.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) reported there were 1.66 million vacancies at the end of August, with that number set to continue rising in the coming months.

Businesses - including supermarket, fast food and pub chains - are united in demanding ministers extend the Shortage Occupation List to allow more workers from abroad, including the EU, to fill UK vacancies in critical jobs.

Shortages fuel demand for HGV training

Here is a list of 10 occupations where, according to the REC and industry data, worker shortages are among the most acute:

• HGV drivers - 100,000+

• Nurses - 79,123

More from Business

• Programmers and software development professionals - 68,929

• Care workers and home carers - 49,751

• Primary and nursery education teaching professionals - 30,574

• Chefs - 29,996

• Sales and retail assistants - 26,183

• Cleaners & domestics - 24,148

• Metal working production and maintenance fitters - 19,748

• Carpenters and joiners - 6,364

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has called for the Shortage Occupation List, which allows companies to recruit skilled workers from the EU and the rest of the world, to be extended to all specialist welders, as well as butchers and bricklayers.

Iceland's chilling warning on consumer prices

The Road Haulage Association has consistently argued that HGV drivers should be included in the scheme as vacancies have risen from a pre-COVID level of 60,000 to beyond 100,000 - threatening wider distribution disruption as the key Christmas season approaches.

The jobs covered by the government's approved list currently include all health professionals, vets, architects, engineers, scientists and even orchestral musicians.

Shocking footage shows shirtless driver going on 'rampage' - Daily Mail

Shocking footage shows shirtless driver going on 'rampage' through Surrey town in Land Rover leaving motorcyclist injured and writing off several cars

A motorcyclist was hospitalised and several cars were badly damaged when a Land Rover driver left a trail of destruction through a leafy Surrey town.

Shocking scenes captured in Godalming on Friday night showed a shirtless man driving a blue Land Rover into several other vehicles before causing a sickening collision with the teenage motorcyclist.

The biker, who was driving down the A3100 main road, had no chance of avoiding the Land Rover as it was driven out of a side road without stopping.

The teen smashed into the driver's side front wheel and somersaulted over the bonnet into the road, lying motionless as the Land Rover reversed and drove away.

The carnage unfolded outside the Leathern Bottle pub in the town with frantic locals shouting at the driver to stop and get out of the car during what they called a 'rampage'.

Shocking footage, taken on Friday in Godalming, Surrey, shows the vehicle, still with 'L' plates attached to the rear, driving into the back of a stationary car before turning into the middle of the road

A motorcyclist rides head-on into the side of the dark blue Land Rover and is launched onto the pavement

In a 90-second clip shared widely on social media, the Land Rover is seen hurtling over grass verges with no lights on, and colliding with a stationary car.

The driver then performs a u-turn in the middle of a junction and lines the Land Rover up, driving back off the road onto the verge at speed.

He smashes into the side of a convertible car as he emerges back on to the road, leaving one witness shouting: 'He's done it again! My f***ing motor!'

The Land Rover turns around in a car park behind the pub and smashes back in to the convertible as he returns, pushing it off the road.

It then heads straight out of the side road and collides with the motorbike, before the incident ends as he lurches the now badly damaged 4x4 a few more yards and hits the side of a Vauxhall Vivaro van.

Onlookers shouted 'call the police' but no emergency services had arrived by the time the video ended and it was unclear if any arrests were made.

MailOnline has contacted Surrey Police for information.

A nurse who was at the Leathern Bottle pub tended to the injured biker – described online as a 17-year-old boy – until paramedics arrived.

He was rushed to hospital but in an update posted on behalf of his family on a local Facebook page, was released and suffered no major injuries.

The statement read: 'We wish to thank all those involved in the care of our son after he was involved in the RTA on Friday.

'We would like to thank the Fire Service for their care, Elaine and the staff at The Leathern Bottle.

'The wonderful nurse (did not get a name) who stayed with our son until the paramedic arrived. Godalming Naval club and all those who were there to support.

'Our son is ok, he has been extremely lucky.

'THANK YOU doesn't seem enough but it seems that is all we can say.'

Female RAF parachute instructor is killed in training accident 'when her chute failed to open' - Daily Mail

Female RAF parachute instructor is killed in training accident 'when her chute failed to open' in dive at Oxfordshire air base

  • The woman fell to her death at RAF Weston-on-the-Green air base on Thursday
  • The instructor leaped from an aircraft but the canopy did not activate
  • The air force said the tragic incident is being investigated

A female RAF parachute instructor has died after her canopy failed to open on a training jump.

The woman plummeted to her death at Weston-on-the-Green airfield in Oxfordshire.

An investigation, led by the British Parachuting Association, has been launched into her death.

The woman, whose identity has not been released, fell to her death at RAF Weston-on-the-Green on Thursday

Sources said there may have been issues with her Automatic Activation Device (AAD), which is supposed to ensure a parachute opens once the jumper reaches a low altitude.

According to unconfirmed reports, the woman, believed to be in her early 30s, had jumped alongside tandem jumpers – a novice parachutist attached to an instructor – and may have been recording their descent with a camera.

The investigation will include examination of the instructor's equipment, which was recovered from the scene, and interviews with those who jumped with her. Any recoverable footage from the camera will also prove crucial.

It is understood Thursday's tragedy occurred during an adventurous training assignment rather than a military exercise and the victim and others had jumped from a light aircraft at an altitude exceeding 12,000ft.

A source close to RAF Weston-on-the-Green said: 'Sometimes jumpers rely on an AAD to inform them when they have reached a pre-selected altitude to deploy their parachute.

'The investigation will seek to confirm whether or not the AAD was effective in this circumstance.'

The airfield is used by the RAF's No 1 Parachute Training School.

An RAF spokesman said: 'We can confirm that a service person has died at RAF Weston-on-the-Green. Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues at this time.

'The incident is being investigated and it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.' In 2015 the British Parachuting Association investigated an incident involving experienced parachutist Victoria Cilliers who was seriously injured after a jump in Wiltshire.

The BPA studied her parachute and found that vital parts had been sabotaged. This led to a police investigation into her husband Emile Cilliers who was found guilty in 2018 of attempting to murder her by tampering with her rigging. He was sentenced to at least 18 years in prison.
