The 10 jobs where people are needed most as UK faces vacancy crisis, according to recruitment confederation - Sky News

The UK economy is suffering an acute shortage of workers with vacancies running at record levels, according to official figures.

The crisis has led to growing calls across key sectors for government intervention, as recruitment is hampered by a combination of post-pandemic shortfalls and Brexit rules.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) reported there were 1.66 million vacancies at the end of August, with that number set to continue rising in the coming months.

Businesses - including supermarket, fast food and pub chains - are united in demanding ministers extend the Shortage Occupation List to allow more workers from abroad, including the EU, to fill UK vacancies in critical jobs.

Shortages fuel demand for HGV training

Here is a list of 10 occupations where, according to the REC and industry data, worker shortages are among the most acute:

• HGV drivers - 100,000+

• Nurses - 79,123

More from Business

• Programmers and software development professionals - 68,929

• Care workers and home carers - 49,751

• Primary and nursery education teaching professionals - 30,574

• Chefs - 29,996

• Sales and retail assistants - 26,183

• Cleaners & domestics - 24,148

• Metal working production and maintenance fitters - 19,748

• Carpenters and joiners - 6,364

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has called for the Shortage Occupation List, which allows companies to recruit skilled workers from the EU and the rest of the world, to be extended to all specialist welders, as well as butchers and bricklayers.

Iceland's chilling warning on consumer prices

The Road Haulage Association has consistently argued that HGV drivers should be included in the scheme as vacancies have risen from a pre-COVID level of 60,000 to beyond 100,000 - threatening wider distribution disruption as the key Christmas season approaches.

The jobs covered by the government's approved list currently include all health professionals, vets, architects, engineers, scientists and even orchestral musicians.

Shocking footage shows shirtless driver going on 'rampage' - Daily Mail

Shocking footage shows shirtless driver going on 'rampage' through Surrey town in Land Rover leaving motorcyclist injured and writing off several cars

  • A motorcyclist then rides head-on into the side of the dark blue Land Rover
  • Witnesses demand the driver 'get out the car', but the incident continues

A motorcyclist was hospitalised and several cars were badly damaged when a Land Rover driver left a trail of destruction through a leafy Surrey town.

Shocking scenes captured in Godalming on Friday night showed a shirtless man driving a blue Land Rover into several other vehicles before causing a sickening collision with the teenage motorcyclist.

The biker, who was driving down the A3100 main road, had no chance of avoiding the Land Rover as it was driven out of a side road without stopping.

The teen smashed into the driver's side front wheel and somersaulted over the bonnet into the road, lying motionless as the Land Rover reversed and drove away.

The carnage unfolded outside the Leathern Bottle pub in the town with frantic locals shouting at the driver to stop and get out of the car during what they called a 'rampage'.

Shocking footage, taken on Friday in Godalming, Surrey, shows the vehicle, still with 'L' plates attached to the rear, driving into the back of a stationary car before turning into the middle of the road

A motorcyclist rides head-on into the side of the dark blue Land Rover and is launched onto the pavement

In a 90-second clip shared widely on social media, the Land Rover is seen hurtling over grass verges with no lights on, and colliding with a stationary car.

The driver then performs a u-turn in the middle of a junction and lines the Land Rover up, driving back off the road onto the verge at speed.

He smashes into the side of a convertible car as he emerges back on to the road, leaving one witness shouting: 'He's done it again! My f***ing motor!'

The Land Rover turns around in a car park behind the pub and smashes back in to the convertible as he returns, pushing it off the road.

It then heads straight out of the side road and collides with the motorbike, before the incident ends as he lurches the now badly damaged 4x4 a few more yards and hits the side of a Vauxhall Vivaro van.

Onlookers shouted 'call the police' but no emergency services had arrived by the time the video ended and it was unclear if any arrests were made.

MailOnline has contacted Surrey Police for information.

A nurse who was at the Leathern Bottle pub tended to the injured biker – described online as a 17-year-old boy – until paramedics arrived.

He was rushed to hospital but in an update posted on behalf of his family on a local Facebook page, was released and suffered no major injuries.

The statement read: 'We wish to thank all those involved in the care of our son after he was involved in the RTA on Friday.

'We would like to thank the Fire Service for their care, Elaine and the staff at The Leathern Bottle.

'The wonderful nurse (did not get a name) who stayed with our son until the paramedic arrived. Godalming Naval club and all those who were there to support.

'Our son is ok, he has been extremely lucky.

'THANK YOU doesn't seem enough but it seems that is all we can say.'

Female RAF parachute instructor is killed in training accident 'when her chute failed to open' - Daily Mail

Female RAF parachute instructor is killed in training accident 'when her chute failed to open' in dive at Oxfordshire air base

  • The woman fell to her death at RAF Weston-on-the-Green air base on Thursday
  • The instructor leaped from an aircraft but the canopy did not activate
  • The air force said the tragic incident is being investigated

A female RAF parachute instructor has died after her canopy failed to open on a training jump.

The woman plummeted to her death at Weston-on-the-Green airfield in Oxfordshire.

An investigation, led by the British Parachuting Association, has been launched into her death.

The woman, whose identity has not been released, fell to her death at RAF Weston-on-the-Green on Thursday

Sources said there may have been issues with her Automatic Activation Device (AAD), which is supposed to ensure a parachute opens once the jumper reaches a low altitude.

According to unconfirmed reports, the woman, believed to be in her early 30s, had jumped alongside tandem jumpers – a novice parachutist attached to an instructor – and may have been recording their descent with a camera.

The investigation will include examination of the instructor's equipment, which was recovered from the scene, and interviews with those who jumped with her. Any recoverable footage from the camera will also prove crucial.

It is understood Thursday's tragedy occurred during an adventurous training assignment rather than a military exercise and the victim and others had jumped from a light aircraft at an altitude exceeding 12,000ft.

A source close to RAF Weston-on-the-Green said: 'Sometimes jumpers rely on an AAD to inform them when they have reached a pre-selected altitude to deploy their parachute.

'The investigation will seek to confirm whether or not the AAD was effective in this circumstance.'

The airfield is used by the RAF's No 1 Parachute Training School.

An RAF spokesman said: 'We can confirm that a service person has died at RAF Weston-on-the-Green. Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues at this time.

'The incident is being investigated and it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.' In 2015 the British Parachuting Association investigated an incident involving experienced parachutist Victoria Cilliers who was seriously injured after a jump in Wiltshire.

The BPA studied her parachute and found that vital parts had been sabotaged. This led to a police investigation into her husband Emile Cilliers who was found guilty in 2018 of attempting to murder her by tampering with her rigging. He was sentenced to at least 18 years in prison.

Claudia Lawrence: Police search of gravel pits near missing chef's home over with 'nothing of obvious significance' found - Sky News

A two-week search in relation to the 2009 disappearance of Claudia Lawrence has ended with "nothing of obvious significance located", police have said.

Detectives from North Yorkshire Police had been searching the Sand Hutton Gravel Pits site - around eight miles from Ms Lawrence's home in York.

They began examining a wooded area on 24 August and later drained a lake in the hope of finding any evidence that would locate the body of the missing university chef.

But on Sunday, Detective Superintendent Wayne Fox, head of the force's investigation team, said that only a "small number of items were recovered".

They will be assessed for any forensic potential, but are not being linked to Ms Lawrence's disappearance, he said.

Nine people have been questioned in relation to her disappearance

Her family has been informed that the search has ended.

Det Supt Fox said that the force launched the search operation after receiving several separate strands of information "pointing to the area of Sand Hutton".

More on Claudia Lawrence

After consulting with experts from various fields, "we could not discount the possibility that Sand Hutton Gravel Pits could have a major relevance in explaining what happened to Claudia", he said.

The investigation lead said he was "duty bound to conduct searches of the area", adding that "not searching was not an option".

Image: Police also drained a lake at the site

He said that while nothing of "obvious" significance was found, public interest in the search has caused several people to come forward with information, which will be assessed in due course.

"As I hope the events of the last two weeks demonstrate, we are committed to establishing what happened to Claudia and bringing closure for her family," he concluded.

"You cannot fail to be moved by the ongoing suffering of a mother who does not know what has happened to her daughter.

"I again repeat the request to those who know what has happened to Claudia, to do the right thing, come forward and help end the torment of Claudia's family."

Image: Peter Lawrence died without knowing what happened to his daughter

Ms Lawrence, 35, was last seen on 18 March 2009 and, although police believe she was murdered, her body has never been found.

Nine people have been questioned during two investigations into her disappearance but no charges have been brought.

Ms Lawrence's father, Peter, died earlier this year without knowing what happened to his daughter.

He campaigned for years for answers and lobbied for the Guardianship (Missing Persons) Bill - also known as Claudia's Law - which allows relatives to take control of their missing loved ones' financial matters.

Her mother said the recent search left her in "utter shock".

Bournemouth Air Festival resumes after plane crashes into sea - BBC News

An eyewitness has told how a pilot avoided a "catastrophe" after a plane crashed into the sea injuring two people at Bournemouth Air Festival.

The crash, involving a wing-walker plane took place away from the display area off Bournemouth beach on Saturday.

Alan Badenhorst helped rescue the pair from Poole Harbour by pulling them on his boat. The crew suffered minor injuries, Dorset Police said.

He said the pilot seemed to display an "incredible feat of flying".

Mr Badenhorst had been in a dinghy with his partner and their three young children when he spotted the low-flying aircraft.

"The plane kept getting lower, and lower," he said. "And then suddenly the plane hit the water and flipped over."

The father-of one, from Wareham, Dorset, said his family then went to the Aerosuperbatics plane's aid, and dragged the pilot and a woman from the water into their dinghy. The plane sunk shortly after, he said.

"It was an incredible piece of flying to be able to land in the water between the rocks, our boats, the chain ferry - just amazing," he said.

He added that after the crash the pilot went under the water to help get his passenger out.

Crane lifting plane out of water

"Had he landed anywhere else it would have been catastrophic... who knows what travesty could have unfolded," Mr Badenhorst said.

"It was the most surreal experience really. It's a day the kids will never forget and I don't think I will either really."

Festival director Jon Weaver said the crew members were "both fine".

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent on Sunday, Mr Weaver said: "I have been in contact, but not directly. They have been discharged and they are out of hospital."

Flying resumed on Sunday at about 15:00 BST, with aerial displays including the Royal Air Force's Red Arrows.

Eyewitnesses described "terrifying" scenes on Saturday afternoon as the biplane hit the water and flipped.

Mark Ash, who saw what happened, said people had been worried the low-flying plane would crash on land.

He said: "It was coming straight towards us. We didn't quite know what to do, We wouldn't have got out the way in time.

"Luckily the pilot - [he was] amazing - managed to steer the plane away from the path and probably crashed 15ft into the water."

Reflecting on the crash, Mr Weaver said it was a reminder of the "huge amount of effort" put into air safety and "fortunately it wasn't a serious incident".

A crane arrived on Sunday to salvage the plane from the water .

Dorset Police and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch have both confirmed they have launched investigations into the crash.

Claudia Lawrence: Police end Sand Hutton lake search - BBC News

Claudia Lawrence - August 2021 police-issued photo - family prefer this is used
PA Media

Nothing of significance has been found during the latest search for clues to the suspected murder of Claudia Lawrence, police have confirmed.

The 35-year-old chef has not been seen since she failed to turn up for work at the University of York in March 2009.

Police began a search of Sand Hutton gravel pits, about eight miles (13km) outside the city, on 24 August.

North Yorkshire Police said some items, with no obvious link to Ms Lawrence, were being assessed.

Leading the inquiry, Det Supt Wayne Fox said "nothing of obvious significance" was located during searches of part of the wooded area and in the smaller of the two lakes at the site.

He said separate strands of information had been received which led to the two-week search at Sand Hutton.

"When we assessed these separate and independently-sourced pieces of information against the wealth of information already generated during the last 12 years, we found they correlated with other information pointing to the area of Sand Hutton," he said.

Det Supt Fox added that officers had consulted with national experts and concluded they could not discount the "possibility that Sand Hutton gravel pits could have a major relevance in explaining what happened to Claudia".

He said the force had been duty bound to conduct thorough searches.

"Not searching was not an option - not for Claudia, not for her family and not for the wider public," he added.

The searches at Sand Hutton involved draining the smaller of the two lakes and combing through extensive woodland that surrounds both lakes.

Det Supt Fox said while a small number of items were recovered during the two-week search, which were being assessed for their forensic potential, any relevance to Ms Lawrence's disappearance had not currently been established.

The disappearance of Ms Lawrence sparked one of the longest running and highest profile missing person cases in the UK.

She was last seen at 15:05 GMT on Wednesday 18 March 2009 as she walked towards her home on Heworth Road, York.

That evening she spoke to both of her parents in separate phone calls, but failed to arrive for her shift at Goodricke College the following day.

Her father, Peter Lawrence, reported her missing on 20 March. A friend of Ms Lawrence's had called him after she did not turn up at a local pub on the evening of 19 March.

A number of people have been questioned in connection with her disappearance, but no charges have ever been brought.

Cordon at Sand Hutton gravel pits

Det Supt Fox said the publicity surrounding the latest search had prompted members of the public to come forward with new information, which would be assessed and investigated.

He added North Yorkshire Police was not liaising with any other police force about the information received.

He said the force remained committed to establishing what had happened to Ms Lawrence.

"You cannot fail to be moved by the ongoing suffering of a mother who does not know what has happened to her daughter," he said.

"I again repeat the request to those who know what has happened to Claudia to do the right thing, come forward and help end the torment of Claudia's family."

Ms Lawrence's father died in February without ever finding out what had happened to his daughter.
