COVID-19: UK records 24,470 new coronavirus cases and 65 more deaths - Sky News

The UK has reported 24,470 new COVID-19 cases and 65 more deaths in the latest 24-hour period.

Some 26,144 coronavirus infections and 71 fatalities were announced yesterday, while 29,173 cases and 20 deaths were reported this time last week.

Live COVID updates from the UK and around the world

Meanwhile, 38,858 people received their first dose of a COVID vaccine yesterday, taking the overall total to 46,851,145 or more than 88% of adults.

And 212,159 had their second jab, meaning 38,345,841 - or 72% of adults - are now fully inoculated.

In total, more than 85 million vaccine doses have been given in the UK.

The latest data from Public Health England and Cambridge University shows that around 60,000 deaths, 22 million infections and 52,600 hospitalisations have been prevented by vaccines up to 23 July.

More on Covid-19

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said: "In under eight months, health services across the UK have delivered more than 85 million doses - this is a phenomenal achievement. It has shown Britain at its best."

It comes as it was revealed that discounted meals and cheaper cab rides will be offered to young people who get a COVID-19 jab, as part of a government-led attempt to boost the uptake of vaccines.

Uber, Bolt, Deliveroo and Pizza Pilgrims are among the brands that will offer incentives to encourage young people to get vaccinated.

Almost three million under-30s are yet to receive a first vaccine dose.

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson is facing a renewed backlash within his own party over the "threat" of domestic vaccine passports, with demands for MPs to be recalled from their holidays to debate the proposal.

Andrew Bridgen, one of 43 Conservative MPs to sign a declaration opposing vaccine passports, said Parliament should be recalled from its summer recess if ministers are "serious" about asking people to show proof of their vaccine status to gain entry to domestic venues and events.

Explainer: Are COVID cases really rising?

The call means cross-party backing is emerging for the Commons to return before September.

Last week, the Liberal Democrats said a change rolled out to the NHS app, allowing users to prove they had been double-jabbed to access domestic settings - as well as for international travel - warranted a recall.

The prime minister has announced that he intends to change the rules in September so that only those who are fully vaccinated can attend nightclubs, in a move designed to increase the take-up of vaccination among young people.

The nightclub stipulations would be stricter than the coronavirus status certificates used at some mass events in recent months, with clubbers not allowed to use proof of a negative COVID-19 test or evidence of having had the virus to gain entry.

Pizza and taxi rides used to lure UK youth into getting Covid-19 vaccination - CNN

The United Kingdom is using take-out food discounts and free taxi rides as incentives for young people to get their Covid-19 vaccines, the country's Department of Health said in a statement Sunday.
So far, companies teaming up with the UK government include Uber, Bolt, Deliveroo and Pizza Pilgrims. Other incentives could include "vouchers or discount codes for people attending pop-up vaccine sites and booking through the NHS (National Health Service), social media competitions and promotional offers for restaurants," the department added.
Some of the incentives from companies such as Uber and Bolt have been used in the past. But the measures are resurfacing due to signs of youth vaccination uptake still catching up to older generations.
People over the age of 80 were among the first in the country to receive their first shot, in December 2020. Since then, vaccination centers have gradually been working their way down to younger demographics.
People under 30 were granted access to their first vaccine dose in June 2021. Around 67% of 18 to 29-year-olds in England have since had a first vaccination, according to the government statement.
A total of 84.7 million vaccine doses have been administered in the UK, with 46.7 million people (88.4%) receiving a first dose and 37.9 million (71.8%) receiving both doses.

In England, home of one of the world's highest vaccination rates, Prime Minister Boris Johnson loosened nearly all Covid-19 restrictions on July 19, while at the same time announcing that full vaccination would be a condition of entry to nightclubs by the end of September, "when all over 18s will have had the chance to be double jabbed."
"Though we can see the enthusiasm of millions of young people to get their jabs, we need even more young adults to receive a protection that is of immense benefit to your family and friends -- and to yourselves. And so I would remind everybody that some of life's most important pleasures and opportunities are likely to be increasingly dependent on vaccination," Johnson warned at the time.
The government has also launched several pop-up vaccination centers across the country, to encourage walk-ins. It said over 600,000 people were vaccinated last weekend at such clinics, including London's Tate Modern Gallery and the Primark clothing store in Bristol.

Charlotte Worthington flips new move for Olympic gold - ITV News

Video report by ITV News reporter Nick Thatcher

Former cook Charlotte Worthington served up a gold medal for Team GB in the BMX freestyle as British success in Tokyo continued on Sunday.

Worthington, from Manchester, landed the first-ever 360 backflip to be performed in women’s competition, having worked in a Mexican restaurant as she trained for this year’s Games.

The 25-year-old’s gold was followed by a bronze for Declan Brooks in the men’s freestyle, while a British quartet snared a silver in the last swimming event in the pool, the 4×100 men’s medley.

Worthington fell in her first run but landed a front flip and a huge backflip on her way to a first-place finish, with Britain’s most successful female Olympic track cyclist Laura Kenny saying: “I think that’s one of my favourite ever Olympic golds!”

Speaking afterwards, she said: “In 2018, I was working in a restaurant.

“At that time it was the Racconto Lounge in Bury, but I started working in restaurants in the Beagle in Manchester.

“In 2018, I went to a couple of events and contests and got speaking to people and found out about BMX being in the Olympics and British cycling were putting together a team.

“At the time, I was just taking a lot of really cool opportunities that I enjoyed doing and it just kind of snowballed from there.”

Her victory came after Bethany Shriever secured the Olympic title in the BMX racing, while Kye Whyte finished second in the men’s event.

Brooks’ bronze means Team GB finished on the podium in all four BMX competitions in Tokyo.

Stephen Park, British Cycling’s performance director, said people should remember her name.

He tweeted: “The route hasn’t been smooth but to nail @Tokyo2020 this after the 1st run fail is huge testimony to her belief & resilience.

“@chazworther A Top @TeamGB @BritishCycling athlete. Remember her name.”

Adrenaline Alley in Corby, where both Worthington and Brooks train, posted of their pride at the BMX performances on social media, saying: “This is unbelievable!! 2 medals are coming home! We are so proud @chazworther @declanbrooks.”

Meanwhile, in the pool, Duncan Scott won a record fourth medal at the Games with a silver in the medley relay alongside Luke Greenbank, James Guy, and Adam Peaty.

Peaty’s mother Caroline said she was “so proud” of the team, who were pipped to first by the United States, who clocked a world record to seal gold.

Britain finished 0.73 seconds adrift in a new European record time as they claimed a record eighth swimming medal – four golds, three silvers and a bronze – beating their previous best haul from the 1908 London Games.

They were unable to win a race at London 2012 while Peaty was their only gold medallist at Rio four years later, so the 26-year-old from Uttoxeter admitted to feeling bittersweet by the result of the final swimming event in Japan.

Peaty said their "pain" at the result shows how much progress Great Britain has made in the pool in the past decade.

'I was blown away': Legendary British swimmer Mark Foster praises the swimming results

Mark Foster, former world champion and one Great Britain's most successful ever swimmers, echoed Peaty's comments that the result show "how far we've come."

"I was blown away, we all had expectations but then them delivering results was always the hard thing," he told ITV News.

"We went in with lots of number one seeded swimmers in the world and they delivered.

"Adam Peaty led the way with the team getting the gold on the second night with the breaststroke and that sort of fed through the team, that sort of belief ran through the team.

"You can always see strength in depth within a team when it comes to the relays and the fact we won the men's 4 x 200 freestyle relay and then won the mixed 4 x 100 medley relay just shows you how far we’ve come."

He added: "Across the board great results. We also had a few people in finals that didn’t quite get there, but were very close. But next time in three years they’ll have a lot more hunger."

COVID-19: 'Many thousands' could lose jobs as changes to furlough scheme come into force - Sky News

There are fears "many thousands" of people will lose their jobs as the furlough scheme is gradually phased out - and the government is being urged to ensure those made redundant are given help to retrain.

Changes from today mean employers will be asked to contribute 20% towards the salaries of those whose wages are being subsidised by the state.

A survey suggests that one in five companies still using the furlough scheme is planning on letting staff go in response.

The Treasury is preparing to fully end the scheme by October.

Official data shows 1.9 million people were still furloughed by the end of June, a reduction from 2.4 million a month earlier.

Figures from HM Revenue and Customs also show those aged 65 and over make up the highest proportion of those still on furlough - and there are fears older workers could find it harder to secure alternative employment.

Jane Gratton from the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC) said: "Today's changes to the furlough scheme will likely result in many thousands of people being released back into the labour market, as employers who are still struggling to recover from the recession are forced to make redundancies and cuts to working hours.

More on Covid-19

"With widespread skills shortages across the economy, some will find new jobs where their skills are in demand, while others will need to retrain for opportunities in a different sector.

"Whether furloughed workers are returning to the workplace or the wider labour market, it is crucial that employers and the government give them the support and training they need to be re-engaged and productive."

The BCC polled 250 businesses with employees still on furlough. Of those, 18% said they were now likelier to make staff redundant, while 25% would reduce working hours or move staff to part-time patterns.

In better news for the British workforce, almost 40% said the change would have no impact on the business.

The number of people on furlough has been dropping since January when 5.1 million workers were stuck at home.

But going into July, more than one in four employers still had some of their staff on furlough.

A government spokesman said: "Our Plan for Jobs is working, and has supported the livelihoods of workers throughout the pandemic with two million fewer people expected to become unemployed than forecast last year."

He added that it is right for furlough support to be tapered as the economy rebounds, and said current initiatives "are helping people of all ages find the skills they need to get back into work".
