Police and demonstrators clash at 'Kill the Bill' protest in central London - Sky News

At least one officer has been injured after clashes between police and demonstrators at a "Kill the Bill" protest in central London.

Projectiles were thrown as police pushed protesters away and at least one officer was injured in the scuffle.

Dozens of extra officers were brought in to help unblock the road for a McDonald's lorry held up outside parliament - and one man was seen being taken away by the police.

Organisers reminded demonstrators to stay socially distanced as crowds grew to more than 300, and speeches were made opposite the Houses of Parliament.

Several women addressed the crowd and shared personal experiences of suffering abuse, while many others carried anti-sexism placards and chanted "women scared everywhere, police and government do not care".

The heated scenes in Parliament Square came amid otherwise peaceful demonstrations across the country over the proposed crime legislation, which opponents fear will limit their right to protest.

Saturday has seen protests not just in the capital, but also in Newcastle, Birmingham, Liverpool, Bristol and Brighton, despite ongoing lockdown restrictions.

More than 1,000 people gathered in Bristol for what was the fifth Kill the Bill demonstration in the city centre in the last two weeks.

Yesterday, Ryan Paul Roberts, 25, was charged with attempted arson with intent to endanger life after an enflamed item was placed underneath an occupied police van outside Bristol's Bridewell Police Station during a protest on 21 March.

In Manchester, people were seen sitting on tram tracks before police moved in.

Greater Manchester Police had previously issued a 48-hour dispersal notice for those engaging in anti-social behaviour.

The protestors have been demonstrating against proposed changes to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.

The changes would give police in England and Wales more power to impose conditions on non-violent protests, including for being too noisy or a nuisance, with fines or jail terms for those convicted.

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn spoke at the gathering in central London today.

He described the bill as a "very dangerous, slippery slope" and defended the right to protest.

"If we don't protest, things don't change," he said, which drew cheers and applause from the crowd.

A statement from the Metropolitan Police said: "The majority of people at today's events in central London have tried to adhere to social distancing and COVID legislation.

"A small minority are blocking the road at Parliament Square. Officers are on scene engaging and encouraging them to move so we can reopen the roads."

Great-grandmother named as victim of fatal attack by escaped dogs - Sky News

An 85-year-old woman who died after being attacked by two escaped dogs in her back garden has been named as Lucille Downer.

Police believe the animals got into the woman's garden in Rowley Regis through a hole in a neighbouring property's fence.

A 43-year-old man has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of being the person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control and death was caused.

A statement from Mrs Downey's family said: "Lucille was a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who spent her working years as a cook at Bromford House Care Home in West Bromwich.

"Lucille was born in Jamaica and emigrated to the UK in her early 20s. Since arriving in the UK, Rowley Regis has always been her home and her family will miss her dearly."

A post-mortem to establish an official cause of death is yet to take place.

In a statement, West Midlands Police said: "The 85-year-old suffered serious injuries following a sustained attack in her rear garden in Boundary Avenue.

"It's understood two dogs managed to get through a fence hole in a neighbouring property.

"Although neighbours rushed to her aid at around 3.20pm yesterday she was sadly confirmed dead at the scene soon afterwards."

The dogs were tranquilised soon after officers arrived at the scene.

The animals were taken to nearby kennels and are being tested to determine their breed.

Speaking at a news conference outside West Bromwich Police Station on Saturday, Superintendent Phil Asquith said: "The dogs will have unfortunately carried out a fairly sustained attack so there were multiple injuries, mainly caused as a result of the delay in getting into the garden.

"But the specifics of the injuries I can't go into."

Speaking about the breed of the dogs, Superintendent Asquith said: "They were two large dogs but we cannot speculate.

"The DNA samples have to be taken to determine the specific breed under the Dangerous Dogs Act (to see if) they are specific breeds that are banned - and I can't speculate as to whether or not they are banned dogs."

Spt Asquith said neighbours responded "very quickly" to the lady being attacked and family members were able to access the garden quickly as they lived nearby.

He added: "Fortunately, the actual owner returned home and was able to get the dogs back into their area at the adjacent premises."

EuroMillions winner: UK ticket-holder claims £122m jackpot - Sky News

A single UK ticket-holder has claimed Friday night's £122m EuroMillions jackpot, becoming the fifth biggest winner in UK National Lottery history.

They now have a "fortune which can make their dreams come true", said Camelot's winners' advisor, Andy Carter.

"What an Easter weekend for one lucky player," he added.

"We will now look to support the ticket-holder through the process and help them to start to enjoy their life changing-win."

The claim - for £122,550,350.80 - will go through a validation process, including checks to ensure the game's terms and conditions are met, Camelot said.

The winning numbers were 04, 21, 34, 40 and 47, while the Lucky Stars were 02 and 05.

It is the second EuroMillions jackpot won in the UK this year.

Another single ticketholder, who chose to remain anonymous, claimed £39m on New Year's Day.

According to The Sunday Times Rich List, Friday's winner has become the 976th richest person in the country.

They now have more money than heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua, with £107m, and Tottenham winger Gareth Bale, who has reportedly amassed £114m.

How to spend the money is something they may spend some time considering.

If they are partial to champagne, they could celebrate with a bottle of Krug Collection 1988. At a mere £890, it would hardly put a dent in their new fortune.

Not every winner blows their sudden fortune on houses, cars, jewellery and mega-yachts. Or indeed champagne.

Frances Connolly, who won £114m with her husband Patrick in January 2019, has revealed they've given away about £60m to family, friends, the local community and charity.

The biggest-ever UK lottery win was £170m in October 2019, the ticket-holder choosing to remain anonymous.
