Last chance saloon for Brussels - Boris Johnson warns EU to drop demands or he'll walk - Express

The Prime Minister’s European envoy Lord Frost yesterday admitted crunch negotiations for a UK-EU trade treaty “may not succeed” given refusal by Brussels to recognise the country’s sovereignty over fishing waters, business regulation and industrial policy. And Downing Street officials signalled that Mr Johnson is running out of patience. He is said to be bracing for a no-deal relationship with the EU similar to Australia’s.

A Government source said: “We do need to urgently make progress on these issues or it will end up an Australia-style deal.

“There is momentum and there is a strong desire on both sides to do a deal but is going to be hard work for Lord Frost this week.”

Mr Johnson is gearing up for a showdown with Brussels in the coming days as his Government bounces back from the week of infighting that led to senior adviser Dominic Cummings’s departure from Downing Street.

The Prime Minister will renew his drive to transform the country by making major announcements in the coming days including publishing a 10-point plan for a “green industrial revolution.”

He will also reach out to Tory MPs in the “Blue Wall” northern territories captured from Labour with a meeting with the Northern Research Group of backbenchers today to hear their ideas for regenerating their region.

In a crucial week for the Government, Lord Frost goes head-to-head with his EU counterpart Michel Barnier ahead of a video conference of EU leaders on Thursday seen by both sides as a deadline for progress.

On his arrival in Brussels yesterday for the talks, the peer warned that the talks will fail unless the EU drops demands for continued control over business regulation, state aid to industry and fishing quotas.

In a statement on Twitter, Lord Frost said: “We are working to get a deal, but the only one that's possible is one that is compatible with our sovereignty and takes back control of our laws, our trade, and our waters. That has been our consistent position from the start and I will not be changing it.

“There has been some progress in a positive direction in recent days.

“We also now largely have common draft treaty texts, though significant elements are of course not yet agreed.

“We will work to build on these and get an overall agreement if we can. But we may not succeed.

“Either way, as the Prime Minister Boris Johnson made clear on 16 October, people and businesses must prepare for the change that is coming on 31 December, most of which happens whether there is a deal or not.”

Senior Brexiteer MPs last night backed Lord Frost to dig in against the EU’s attempts to bully the UK.

Former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith said: “Lord Frost needs to stand firm this week. He is absolutely right to say that we are a sovereign nation and cannot accept anything that leave us being constrained by the EU.

“At the moment, Brussels wants to continue treating us like a member of the EU.

“All we are asking for is the same trade relationship that Canada, South Korea and other countries have with the EU.

“If it wants a deal, the EU has to stop pretending that it can control the UK.”

Andrea Jenkyns, a deputy chairman of the European Research Group of Eurosceptic Tories, said: “Mr Frost's comments demonstrate that we are in good hands with our negotiators and our government is serious about taking back control and delivering on our promises to the British people.

“We will not  bow down to unreasonable EU demands and we are prepared to walk away, deal or no deal.”

Environment Secretary George Eustice insisted talks with the EU on a future trade deal would not be affected by the departure of Mr Cummings, who masterminded the Vote Leave campaign in the run up to the 2016 EU referendum.

“The negotiations have been led by David Frost from the beginning. He’s got a very talented, experienced team of technical experts around him.

“He’s led these negotiations from the start and obviously remains in place and continues to do so.

“So I don’t actually think the departure of Dominic Cummings makes any impact on the negotiations, since Lord Frost has been leading those,” Mr Eustice said.

Insisting the Government was moving on from the bout of Downing Street squabbling, the Cabinet minister said: “Dominic Cummings is a force of nature. He will do his own thing, I’m sure.

"But look, as far as we’re concerned, there’s obviously been an episode. He’s chosen to leave.

Fisheries has remained a sticking point

He added:  “I’ve known Dominic Cummings myself for many years. He’s got many great strengths and one of them is winning campaigns.

“And he tends to apply himself in short bursts, short tours of duty, on big strategic changes such as the 2016 referendum result, such as the 2019 general election.

“And he’s very talented at that. But it’s always the Prime Minister’s prerogative who will be their key advisors.”

With his Downing Street team being reshaped, Mr Johnson is set to make key decisions this week including over the scheduled easing of the second coronavirus lockdown next month.

He will also discuss details of Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s spending review to be held next week.

A No 10 spokesman said: “This Government is determined to improve opportunities for people across the country, regardless of their background or where they live in the UK.

“We were elected on an ambitious manifesto to deliver this agenda, investing in education, skills and our NHS, tackling crime and introducing tougher sentencing for those who commit the most heinous crimes, as well as concluding our trade negotiations with the EU.

“Our agenda remains focused on this and we will never veer off this course, as we build back better from the coronavirus pandemic.”

Boris Johnson self-isolating after meeting with MP who tested positive for COVID-19 - Sky News

Boris Johnson is self-isolating after an MP he had a meeting with later tested positive for COVID-19.

The prime minister said he had been notified by NHS Test and Trace that he has to self-isolate as he has been in contact with someone who has tested positive.

Mr Johnson tweeted: "I have no symptoms, but am following the rules and will be working from No 10 as I continue to lead the government's pandemic response."

Mr Johnson had a meeting lasting about 35 minutes with some MPs in Number 10 on Thursday morning, including Lee Anderson.

Mr Anderson then developed symptoms for COVID-19 and tested positive.

The MP for Ashfield and Eastwood, north of Nottingham, posted a picture of himself on Facebook standing apart from Mr Johnson after the meeting on Thursday. Neither were wearing face masks.

He said: "Breakfast with the PM. This morning I met with the PM at Number 10.

"I was there with my wish list for Ashfield and Eastwood. Investment is coming, you have my word on that."

Andy Carter, another Conservative MP who was at the same meeting, said he has also been contacted by NHS Test and Trace and will now self-isolate.

The PM spent three nights in intensive care at St Thomas' Hospital in central London in April after testing positive for COVID-19 on 27 March.

He is hoping to continue to speak to the country during his self-isolation period, which should end on 26 November.

Mr Johnson's self-isolation comes at the end of a week of turmoil in which his director of communications, Lee Cain, resigned, followed by his top aide Dominic Cummings on Friday.

Next week was meant to be a fresh start as the final days of Brexit negotiations with the EU are due to start.

Now, he will have to take part in what could be the most important days of the talks via video call.

Covid-19: Boris Johnson self-isolating after MP tests positive - BBC News

Boris Johnson is self-isolating after meeting an MP who later tested positive for Covid-19.

The PM was contacted by NHS Test and Trace on Sunday but is not showing symptoms, Downing Street said.

Mr Johnson spent about 35 minutes with Ashfield MP Lee Anderson who has since tested positive, BBC political correspondent Nick Eardley said.

In April, Mr Johnson spent three nights in intensive care after falling ill with the virus.

He later said it "could have gone either way" and thanked healthcare workers for saving his life.

In a statement, a No 10 spokesman said: "The prime minister has today been notified by NHS Test and Trace that he is required to self-isolate as a contact of someone who has tested positive for Covid-19.

"The prime minister will follow the rules and is self-isolating.

"He will carry on working from Downing Street, including on leading the government's response to the coronavirus pandemic.

"The PM is well and does not have any symptoms of Covid-19."

Boris Johnson will now have to stay at home in No 10 for the next 10 days.

It means he will not be able to be in Parliament, though I'm told he will be working from Downing Street.

He does still intend to keep communicating with the country.

It was supposed to be a pretty big week for Boris Johnson - he is trying to reset his government after some factional fighting in his office over the last few days.

There are conversations taking place with the parliamentary authorities to see whether he can still contribute to the Commons.

I think it is fair to say this has not come at the best time for Mr Johnson: he has big decisions to make on Brexit and what happens when England's lockdown ends on 2 December.

And it is also worth bearing in mind he was extremely ill with coronavirus earlier in the year and we do not know what getting the virus does for a person's immunity.

On Thursday, Conservative MP Mr Anderson posted a photo of himself with Mr Johnson at No 10 alongside the words: "Breakfast with the PM."

Mr Anderson posted on his Facebook page to say he was self-isolating with his wife, who is clinically vulnerable.

'Both feeling good'

"On Friday I lost my sense of taste at the same time my wife had a bad headache," he said. "I had no cough, no fever and felt well. We both had a test on Saturday and the result came in Sunday morning.

"My wife and I both tested positive. I feel absolutely fine and my biggest concern is my wife who is in the shielded group.

"But we are both feeling good."

BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg tweeted the news had come the night before what was meant to be a "big relaunch week", following the row last week involving the PM's chief adviser Dominic Cummings.

Mr Cummings left Downing Street for the last time on Friday following internal battles about his role.

Earlier this weekend, a senior Tory MP said Mr Cummings' departure was a chance to "reset government".

The UK government announced another 24,962 confirmed Covid cases on Sunday, as well as a further 168 deaths within 28 days of a positive test.

COVID-19: Hull NHS boss calls for tighter lockdown and school closures - Sky News

The UK's COVID-19 hotspot should have a tighter lockdown and school closures to reduce spiralling cases, Hull's NHS boss has said.

Hull in East Yorkshire became England's worst affected area this week as infection rates soared to well above 700 per 100,000 people.

This weekend, around 180 people are being treated at the Hull Royal Infirmary for COVID-19, with numbers expected to increase significantly in the next two weeks.

Chris Long, the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust chief executive, told Sky News: "We are at the next point in our surge plan so we are redeploying staff from other departments.

"There are still people out there who think COVID is some sort of massive hoax or that it's just flu...it's definitely not a hoax and the number of deaths we are experiencing is evidence of that."

In the first two weeks of November 50 people died at the Royal Infirmary.

"We need to be looking quite seriously at much stiffer lockdown restrictions than we have got," Mr Long added.

More from Covid-19

"We are seeing very high transmission rates around us and that's because, despite the lockdown, a lot of people are just going about their normal lives."

Mr Long said that meant he would like schools to be closed for a short period to try and reduce transmission.

"I'm afraid it would have to, and in other parts of the country," he said.

"The actions that we take now are the ones that will prevent the spread and this means more restrictions."

Jason England, who works in the food industry in Hull, told Sky News: "You get people at the extremes - some people are really paranoid about it and others are just laissez faire....almost a bit punch drunk by it all.

"I think people do want to do the right thing but people are struggling to stick with it."

Dog walker Suzie Nichols said: "I'm still seeing people without masks and in bigger groups than they should be.

"I think we'll come to the end of this lockdown and just be in the highest tier and it will just carry on."

Also out for her daily exercise in the bracing winds around Hull Marina was Cynthia Asakapa who works as a radiographer at the city's main hospital.

She told Sky News: "We are working really hard to get those rates down, but everyone needs just to keep up to date with hygiene, wearing face masks etc - all the things we know we should be doing.

"I know it's tempting to visit your family, I'd love to go and visit my family in London but we have to just do this, keep the faith we can do this and reduce these levels."

Islington baptism service halted by police due to lockdown rules - BBC News

Police halted a baptism service after about 30 worshippers gathered in breach of national lockdown restrictions.

Regan King, lead pastor at The Angel Church, Islington, defended his decision to hold the service, saying it served "the greater good".

The pastor agreed to hold a brief "socially distanced outdoor gathering in the church courtyard" after officers halted the service.

Four officers stood at the entrance stopping people from entering.

Under current restrictions weddings and baptisms are not allowed in England. Funerals can be attended by a maximum of 30 people.

Mr King, 28, said he wanted to hold the baptism as it was providing "an essential service".

He said: "We were told not to have a baptism and police began to block people from entering the church, so we decided to make other arrangements."

Asked why he had decided to breach the restrictions, Mr King said: "Because I believe we serve a greater good.

"This is an essential service that we provide.

"It's about loving our neighbour, and you can talk with a number of people here who are extremely vulnerable, homeless or on the verge of being very isolated."

Two police vans and a police car parked outside the church's hall.

A 22-year-old attendee said: "While the restrictions allow people to go to the supermarket to get food, I think there needs to be consideration for spiritual food as well."

On Friday, more than 100 church leaders launched a judicial review of the decision to ban people from worshipping together.

A Met spokesman said officers spoke with the pastor following reports he intended to hold a "baptism and an in-person service".

The spokesman said: "Officers explained that due to Covid-19, restrictions are in place preventing gatherings and that financial penalties can be applied if they are breached."

Ambulance stolen by joyriders as paramedics helped sick patient - Metro.co.uk

An ambulance was stolen by ‘extremely irresponsible’ joyriders as paramedics treated a patient.

The crew were working at around 10pm on Saturday to help a sick person in Shotton, Flintshire, Wales.

They had to be taken to A&E, so the theft could have caused ‘very serious harm’ as the vehicle was no longer available.

Luckily, the ambulance service was able to quickly dispatch another vehicle to assist the paramedic crew.

North Wales Police officers later found the ambulance damaged and abandoned nearby.

Now the police force and also the Welsh Ambulance Service are appealing for information to find those responsible.

Bob Tooby, Welsh Ambulance Service’s assistant director of operations, said: ‘This is a very rare occurrence but is being treated incredibly seriously.

‘The theft of an emergency ambulance is an extremely irresponsible act placing patients and the public at risk.

‘Had the crew needed to access additional emergency equipment, or to urgently convey the patient to hospital, this could have led to very serious harm.

‘Our services have been extremely busy dealing with winter pressures, alongside the challenges of the pandemic.

‘We will be supporting our North Wales Police colleagues to find the person responsible, and bring them to justice.’

Director of Operations for the service Lee Brookes said: ‘As if the service and communities haven’t had enough to deal with this year, we have what I can only describe as mindless stupidity to contend with too.’

North Wales Police said the vehicle had to be taken off the road by the ambulance service.

They added: ‘On Saturday 14th November at 2200 hours a Welsh Ambulance service vehicle was stolen from Green Lane in Deeside.

‘The Ambulance was located a short time after in Dee View Crescent abandoned with damage caused.

‘As a result this has left the Ambulance service with one less emergency resource and ultimately putting people’s lives in danger.

‘North Wales Police are appealing to the public for any information with regards to who is responsible.’
