Coronavirus: West Yorkshire set for tough Tier 3 rules as swathes of England move to Tier 2 - Sky News

The whole of West Yorkshire - including Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield - will go into Tier 3 coronavirus restrictions, it has been announced.

The change will come into effect from 12:01am on Monday, Leeds City Council leader Judith Blake told Sky News.

Local leaders have been in talks with ministers about the move into England's highest band of measures for more than a week, to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Elsewhere, a host of other areas are due to move into Tier 2 from Saturday.

That includes Luton and Oxford; in the Midlands Derby, Dudley, Bolsover and Staffordshire; and further north, the East Riding of Yorkshire, Kingston upon Hull and North Lincolnshire - as well as some other places.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said earlier there is a "worrying rise in cases right across the country" so "decisive action is needed".

He continued: "These restrictions are challenging for us all, but it is only by working together and following the rules that we will bring down the rates of infection.

"A failure to act now will only lead to longer disruption and greater economic damage."

The government has not yet confirmed the Tier 3 move for West Yorkshire.

Patel refuses to rule out national lockdown

Bradford Council leader Susan Hinchcliffe said on Wednesday the government was "unflinching in their resolve" to place the area into Tier 3, but denied it was a "stand-off".

Hospital admissions have risen dramatically in the region recently, with NHS figures showing Yorkshire and the Humber has the fastest-growing COVID-19 rates in England.

Earlier this week, the trust that runs Leeds General Infirmary and St James's Hospital, also in Leeds, said only essential operations will take place after the number of coronavirus patients was higher than during the peak of the first wave.

Other hospitals, including Bradford Royal Infirmary, have reported similarly high figures, and the Nightingale hospital in Harrogate is one of only a few told to prepare to accept patients again.

The latest Public Health England (PHE) figures show Leeds had a rate of 422.9 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days up to 23 October.

England's overall rate is 224 cases per 100,000 people for that same period.

South Yorkshire went into Tier 3 last Saturday.

Labour called for a short lockdown known as a "circuit break" to coincide with half-term, following a similar call by the government's top scientific advisers known as SAGE at the end of September.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resisted those suggestions, saying his "local and regional approach" will "drive down the virus".

But Home Secretary Priti Patel refused on Thursday to rule out another national lockdown.

It comes as 23,065 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in the UK, and a further 280 died.

UK's Labour Party suspends former leader Jeremy Corbyn after anti-Semitism report - CNN

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on Thursday identified "serious failings" with how Labour dealt with anti-Semitism in the party during Corbyn's time as leader.
Corbyn responded to the report by saying that while he condemned anti-Semites, the scale of the problem under his leadership had been "dramatically overstated for political reasons."
Those comments drew a swift and dramatic response from the party. "In light of (Corbyn's) comments made today and his failure to retract them subsequently, the Labour Party has suspended Jeremy Corbyn pending investigation. He has also had the whip removed from the Parliamentary Labour Party," a party spokesperson said.
The decision rocked the British political world: Less than a year ago, at the December 2019 general election, Corbyn was bidding to be Prime Minister.
Corbyn said he would "strongly contest" the decision to suspend him.
He said on Twitter: "I've made absolutely clear those who deny there has been an antisemitism problem in the Labour Party are wrong. I will continue to support a zero tolerance policy towards all forms of racism."
Earlier on Thursday, Corbyn said in a statement that he worked to "speed up -- not hinder" the investigation of complaints.
He added: "One anti-Semite is one too many, but the scale of the problem was also dramatically overstated for political reasons by our opponents inside and outside the party, as well as by much of the media. That combination hurt Jewish people and must never be repeated."
Before Corbyn's suspension was publicly announced, his successor as leader, Keir Starmer, said he accepted the report "in full" and would implement all its recommendations. "It is a day of shame for the Labour Party. We have failed Jewish people... I am truly sorry for all the pain and grief that has been caused," Starmer said in a prepared statement.
"Never again will we fail to tackle anti-Semitism and never again will we lose your trust," Starmer added.
The EHRC said the political party was responsible for three breaches of the Equality Act. These were: Political interference in anti-Semitism complaints; failure to provide proper training to handle the complaints; and harassment.
Caroline Waters, interim chair of the EHRC, said in a statement Thursday: "Our investigation has highlighted multiple areas where its [Labour's] approach and leadership to tackling anti-Semitism was insufficient."
"This is inexcusable and appeared to be a result of a lack of willingness to tackle anti-Semitism rather than an inability to do so."
A longtime leftwinger, Corbyn had put forward an avowedly socialist program for government at last December's election. But it was was rejected by voters, who re-elected the Conservative Party under its latest leader, Boris Johnson. Corbyn quit the Labour leadership, to be succeeded in April by Starmer, who has pursued a less radical agenda.
The Labour party was in last power in Britain from 1997 to 2010.

'We don't want a second national lockdown'

The changes mean people must not meet socially with anybody they do not live with or are in a support bubble with in any indoor setting.

He continued: "These restrictions are challenging for us all, but it is only by working together and following the rules that we will bring down the rates of infection.
