UK's Labour Party suspends former leader Jeremy Corbyn after anti-Semitism report - CNN

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on Thursday identified "serious failings" with how Labour dealt with anti-Semitism in the party during Corbyn's time as leader.
Corbyn responded to the report by saying that while he condemned anti-Semites, the scale of the problem under his leadership had been "dramatically overstated for political reasons."
Those comments drew a swift and dramatic response from the party. "In light of (Corbyn's) comments made today and his failure to retract them subsequently, the Labour Party has suspended Jeremy Corbyn pending investigation. He has also had the whip removed from the Parliamentary Labour Party," a party spokesperson said.
The decision rocked the British political world: Less than a year ago, at the December 2019 general election, Corbyn was bidding to be Prime Minister.
Corbyn said he would "strongly contest" the decision to suspend him.
He said on Twitter: "I've made absolutely clear those who deny there has been an antisemitism problem in the Labour Party are wrong. I will continue to support a zero tolerance policy towards all forms of racism."
Earlier on Thursday, Corbyn said in a statement that he worked to "speed up -- not hinder" the investigation of complaints.
He added: "One anti-Semite is one too many, but the scale of the problem was also dramatically overstated for political reasons by our opponents inside and outside the party, as well as by much of the media. That combination hurt Jewish people and must never be repeated."
Before Corbyn's suspension was publicly announced, his successor as leader, Keir Starmer, said he accepted the report "in full" and would implement all its recommendations. "It is a day of shame for the Labour Party. We have failed Jewish people... I am truly sorry for all the pain and grief that has been caused," Starmer said in a prepared statement.
"Never again will we fail to tackle anti-Semitism and never again will we lose your trust," Starmer added.
The EHRC said the political party was responsible for three breaches of the Equality Act. These were: Political interference in anti-Semitism complaints; failure to provide proper training to handle the complaints; and harassment.
Caroline Waters, interim chair of the EHRC, said in a statement Thursday: "Our investigation has highlighted multiple areas where its [Labour's] approach and leadership to tackling anti-Semitism was insufficient."
"This is inexcusable and appeared to be a result of a lack of willingness to tackle anti-Semitism rather than an inability to do so."
A longtime leftwinger, Corbyn had put forward an avowedly socialist program for government at last December's election. But it was was rejected by voters, who re-elected the Conservative Party under its latest leader, Boris Johnson. Corbyn quit the Labour leadership, to be succeeded in April by Starmer, who has pursued a less radical agenda.
The Labour party was in last power in Britain from 1997 to 2010.

'We don't want a second national lockdown'

The changes mean people must not meet socially with anybody they do not live with or are in a support bubble with in any indoor setting.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said there is a "worrying rise in cases right across the country" so "decisive action is needed".

He continued: "These restrictions are challenging for us all, but it is only by working together and following the rules that we will bring down the rates of infection.

"A failure to act now will only lead to longer disruption and greater economic damage."

Weekly infection rates in Luton stand at 156 per 100,000 people, while in Oxford it is 138.

In the Midlands, they vary but the highest is 439 in Charnwood, while the lowest is 170 in the Derbyshire Dales.

And in Yorkshire and the Humber, the highest weekly case rate is in North East Lincolnshire at 320, while the lowest is in North Lincolnshire at 196.

The new measures will be reviewed every 14 days to decide if they are still appropriate.

Labour called for a short lockdown known as a "circuit break" to coincide with half-term, following a similar call by the government's top scientific advisers known as SAGE at the end of September.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resisted those suggestions, saying his "local and regional approach" will "drive down the virus."

It comes as 23,065 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in the UK, and a further 280 died.

He then gave a press conference in which he repeated this and insisted: "I'm not part of the problem."

Mr Corbyn also said he would not quit Labour, adding that he is "proud to be a member of the Labour Party" which he joined when he was 16, and said: "I've fought racism all my life, and I'll fight racism for the rest of my life."

The MP has vowed to "strongly contest the political intervention to suspend me".

He tweeted: "I've made absolutely clear those who deny there has been an antisemitism problem in the Labour Party are wrong. I will continue to support a zero tolerance policy towards all forms of racism."

An emergency shadow cabinet meeting has been called for 4pm.

The investigation into antisemitism by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) found Labour had broken the law in how it dealt with complaints of antisemitism in the period when Mr Corbyn was leader.

It said there were "serious failings" by its leadership, political interference by Mr Corbyn's office into complaints and found the party responsible for "unlawful acts of harassment and discrimination".

Current leader Sir Keir Starmer said in his reaction to the report: "And if - after all the pain, all the grief, and all the evidence in this report, there are still those who think there's no problem with antisemitism in the Labour Party. That it's all exaggerated, or a factional attack.

"Then, frankly, you are part of the problem too. And you should be nowhere near the Labour Party either."

When asked by Sky's Kate McCann if that meant Mr Corbyn should no longer be a member of the party, Sir Keir repeated his words and said he would look at what his predecessor had said.

An hour later, the party said it had suspended Mr Corbyn.

He has also had the whip removed, which means he is no longer part of Labour within Parliament, so he can remain an MP but is now an independent.

Sky News' political correspondent Joe Pike said he understands Mr Corbyn's reaction to being suspended was "complete shock" as he said: "What?"

Labour MP Harriet Harman, chair of the human rights committee, tweeted: "This is the right thing to do.

"If you say that AS [antisemitism] exaggerated for factional reasons you minimise it and are, as Keir Starmer says, part of the problem."

John McDonnell, Mr Corbyn's shadow chancellor when he was leader, urged party members to "stay calm" and "all call upon the leadership to lift this suspension".

He tweeted: "On the day we should all be moving forward & taking all steps to fight antisemitism, the suspension of Jeremy Corbyn is profoundly wrong. In interests of party unity let's find a way of undoing & resolving this."
