Terrifying footage has shown red leaping flames spewing up from Bournemouth beach over a cliff and up to the road above after a fire was started by someone cooking in a beach hut.

In the video taken close to the evacuated Highcliff Marriott hotel, a car hastily reverses away from the roadside where thick smoke and huge flames were thrown up by the sea breeze on Monday afternoon.

Sunbathers had earlier fled in terror after a man rushed out of one of the rented huts along the beach and shouted for people to get back because he feared a gas canister inside could explode.

The fire spread to two adjacent huts and the southerly breeze soon fanned its flames onto the tinder-dry gorse behind, through which a 100ft tract of destruction was torn.

Eight fire crews raced to scene at 3.50pm and put out the fire in the beach huts and set about tackling the fire raging through the dense vegetation on the cliff.

The blaze on the cliff was eventually brought under control and South Western Ambulance Service said there were no reports of any injuries.

Emergency services have scrambled to the West Undercliff area, where a cordon has been erected and sun-bathers evacuated. The fire quickly spread from the burning beach huts and has blazed a path of destruction up 100sqm of heath where photos show it is perilously close to the cliff-top hotel and other homes.

Brexit Britain stands firm as crunch EU talks on brink – 'Will NOT give up our rights!' - Express

Downing Street insisted the UK will “engage constructively” with the EU over a deal on future relations but admitted “significant” differences still remain with just weeks to go. British negotiator David Frost had dinner with European counterpart Michel Barnier in London last night as both sides pushed for a breakthrough. But the UK will not give up its rights as an independent state, No 10 insisted yesterday.

“In terms of the discussions that we have been having throughout the intensified process, they have continued to be constructive but significant differences still remain on a number of important issues.”

Although the negotiators have met frequently over recent weeks, tensions still remain over key areas and the British team expect “difficult” discussions in the days ahead.

Britain wants Brussels to make a dramatic shift in its demands for the same access to UK fishing waters as it has now.

It is also fiercely opposed to demands for so-called level playing field rules that will keep the country tied to EU rules.

No 10 believes leaders in the remaining 27 nations are continuing to hold out for terms that would never be acceptable to the UK despite being told the government will not shift.

“Our position on our sovereignty, laws and fisheries is clear, we will not give up our rights as an independent state,” the spokesman added.

“We will continue to engage constructively with the EU on these key issues and will work hard to reach the broad outline of an agreement, but as we have been clear all along we are not asking for a special, bespoke or unique deal.

The Prime Minister has repeatedly warned that Britain will walk away if an agreement cannot be reached within weeks because he wants to give businesses and individuals time to prepare for changes that will come into force on January 1.

Without an agreement, tariffs and quotas will be imposed on the UK.

But Mr Johnson insists the UK is ready to operate on world trade rules from 2021 if a deal cannot be struck, in the same way as Australia does with the bloc.

As well as trade, the UK and EU are also working to secure new arrangements on security, air travel and energy supplies.

That last round of talks is pencilled in for August but Downing Street refused to say if that would be the final chance to strike a deal.

Bournemouth blaze in beach huts spreads up hillside - BBC News

Media playback is unsupported on your device

A blaze broke out in beach huts in Bournemouth, sending flames shooting up the hillside behind.

Hundreds of beachgoers watched flames spread when the fire, believed to have been caused by a cooking stove, broke out at 15:45 BST.

Eight crews were tackling the blaze at its height, Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

People were urged to stay away from the area as a precaution, as a huge plume of black smoke rose over the town.

There are no reports of injuries and the fire is believed to have started accidentally in one of the huts.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said it was understood the fire started when a camping stove was knocked over.

Chief nurse Ruth May confirms she was dropped from Number 10 briefing amid Dominic Cummings row - Sky News

England's chief nursing officer has confirmed she was "dropped" from one of Downing Street's daily coronavirus briefings in the midst of controversy over Dominic Cummings's lockdown trips.

Ruth May told MPs she was axed from the line-up for the Number 10 briefing on 1 June despite having already prepared for her appearance.

It had previously been reported that the decision was taken to axe Ms May after she refused to publicly back Mr Cummings.

At the time, the prime minister's chief adviser was under huge pressure to quit his role after being accused of flouting the UK's COVID-19 lockdown rules.

Ms May was asked about the report during her appearance before the House of Commons' Public Accounts Committee on Monday.

"It is indeed true that I was dropped from a briefing, but that happens to many of my colleagues as well," she told MPs.

"That is a regular occurrence."

But Ms May said she didn't know why she was dropped from the press briefing.

Pressed on whether she had been asked, during her preparations for the briefing, to defend Boris Johnson's senior adviser, Ms May replied: "As in at all press briefings, we talk about a lot of these preparation questions.

"And yes, of course, I was asked about lockdown and rules to lockdown, yes."

Asked what her views were, at the time, of lockdown and Mr Cummings's actions, she said: "I believe that, in my opinion, the rules were clear and they are there for everyone's safety and they applied to us all."

"They certainly apply to all of us, including me," Ms May added.

But, questioned on whether her views were the reason she was dropped from the 1 June briefing, England's chief nurse replied: "I don't know why I was dropped from the briefing, I'm afraid.

"You'd have to ask other people for that."

She added: "People are stepped up and stepped down at short notice."

Prof Van-Tam: 'The rules are clear and they have always been clear'

Ms May's planned appearance on 1 June came shortly after Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, England's deputy chief medical officer, used a Downing Street briefing to stress the coronavirus lockdown rules were "clear" and "apply to all".

In a report by the Independent, a "senior NHS source" was quoted as describing how Ms May was asked by a Number 10 adviser how she would answer a question about Mr Cummings.

"She refused to play along and told them she would answer the same way as Jonathan Van-Tam," the source was quoted as saying.

"She was dropped immediately from the press briefing."

Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who appeared at the 1 June briefing for which Ms May was absent, ignored a question about the matter in the House of Commons later on Monday.

Labour's shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth said: "It is scandalous that the nation's most senior nurse was silenced at the height of the pandemic because she wasn't prepared to parrot Downing Street spin about Dominic Cummings's blatant rule breaking."

Daily news conferences were a key feature of the government's response to the coronavirus pandemic for a number of weeks.

On 2 June, Number 10 announced it was scrapping briefings at weekends due to "significantly lower" viewing figures.

On 23 June, three months after the UK entered lockdown, Downing Street scrapped the daily briefings entirely in favour of ad-hoc appearances by ministers.

Sunbathers fled to safety today when an inferno erupted inside a Bournemouth beach hut and ripped across the heath-covered cliff above the sands.

The was started by a gas stove being used inside one of the wooden huts along the busy promenade just 400 yards from the four-star Highcliff Marriott Hotel.

A man rushed out of the timber cabin shouting for people to get back as there was a gas canister inside that could explode.

Beachgoers abandoned their possessions and fled as the hut became engulfed in flames and a loud 'popping' sound was heard from within.

The flames spread to two adjacent huts and onto the grassy cliff face behind.

Due to the gorse being tinder-dry and a strong southerly breeze fanning the flames, a huge 100ft long strip of the sloping cliff was set alight.

Eight fire crews raced to scene at 3.50pm and put out the fire in the beach huts and set about tackling the fire on the cliff.

The blaze on the cliff has now been brought under control and South Western Ambulance Service said there were no reports of any injuries.
